{"id":172232,"date":"2023-06-22T10:15:11","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T17:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.canyon-news.com\/?p=172232"},"modified":"2025-04-07T07:00:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T14:00:33","slug":"wildlife-ordinance-one-step-closer-to-final-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.canyon-news.com\/wildlife-ordinance-one-step-closer-to-final-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife Ordinance One Step Closer To Final Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HOLLYWOOD HILLS\u2014A proposed Wildlife Ordinance, created to protect the environment surrounding hillside communities in Los Angeles County, was approved by the Los Angeles City Council Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) during a meeting on Tuesday, June 20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/planning.lacity.org\/plans-policies\/wildlife-pilot-study#about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wildlife Ordinance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to Los Angeles City Planning, aims to \u201csupport conservation of local plants and animals while building climate resilience, fire safety, and a healthy watershed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If passed, it would become effective in a pilot area consisting of hillside cities between Griffith Park and the 405 Freeway, including Sherman Oaks, Hollywood Hills, Bel Air, Laurel Canyon, and Beverly Crest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ordinance details several new regulations concerning development standards for land and houses in these hillside areas. The regulations include lot size, grading and height restrictions, window and lighting requirements, as well as limitations on the landscaping of native trees and plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fencing materials are also regulated; the use of barbed wire, plastic mesh, concertina wire, and razor wire would be prohibited under the Wildlife Ordinance. All trash would need to be stored inside a building or enclosed area that meets specific design standards set by the ordinance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homeowners will not be required to alter existing homes and properties to reflect these rules, and minor renovations would not need to be reported. Only new developments and major remodels will need to follow the regulations set forth by the Wildlife Ordinance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountain lions, bobcats, and coyotes are among the animals that are known to walk through properties at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains. A goal of the ordinance is to preserve natural habitats and wildlife corridors as well as prevent harm to animals that frequent hillside areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ordinance was unanimously backed by PLUM Committee members at the meeting on June 20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOver the last few decades we\u2019ve seen development in the hillside scale out of proportion, resulting in unsafe conditions not only for wildlife but also for people,\u201d said Council and Committee member Katy Yaroslavsky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several members of the community spoke out at the meeting to express their opposition to the Wildlife Ordinance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a homeowner in the Hollywood Hills and I oppose the Wildlife Ordinance,\u201d said Brandon Williams. \u201cThis is going to greatly impact private property rights; this will greatly impact the value of property.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others were concerned about a sizing regulation that would prevent new buildings, additions, or basements from being more than 50 percent of a lot\u2019s square footage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany homeowners have their life savings tied up in their land value and capping below-ground buildable square footage, which does not harm wildlife in a meaningful way, would be devastating to their property values and put many of them in challenging financial positions,\u201d said Archie Obani, a resident of the Santa Monica Mountains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should the Wildlife Ordinance pass and prove successful, the city plans to expand the boundaries to other areas of Los Angeles in the interest of wildlife protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next step of the finalization process, the Wildlife Ordinance will be voted on by the full City Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOLLYWOOD HILLS\u2014A proposed Wildlife Ordinance, created to protect the environment surrounding hillside communities in Los Angeles County, was approved by the Los Angeles City Council Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) during a meeting on Tuesday, June 20.\u00a0 The Wildlife Ordinance, according to Los Angeles City Planning, aims to \u201csupport conservation of local plants [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":615,"featured_media":172233,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7,69,36038,10,17],"tags":[1857,36942,36943],"class_list":{"0":"post-172232","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bel-air","8":"category-griffith-park","9":"category-hollywood-hills-2","10":"category-laurel-canyon","11":"category-sherman-oaks","12":"tag-santa-monica-mountains","13":"tag-wildlife-ordinance","14":"tag-wildlife-protection"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.1.1 -
