UNITED STATES—Eddy Arias is not your typical novelist. With extensive experience as a senior-level entertainment executive, he imbues his storytelling with insight honed from navigating the complex world of film and television. His debut novel, ALICIA, is more than just a book; it’s a psychological drama that captivates readers with its intricately crafted characters and unexpected twists, transforming the reading experience into something akin to watching a gripping film.

ALICIA: A Psychological Drama

ALICIA begins with an immersive narrative that grips readers from the first paragraph. Arias masterfully presents a psychological drama that transcends geographic boundaries and speaks to universal themes, making it relatable to a broad audience. The characters in the novel are meticulously articulated, and the plot is filled with shocking turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. Arias attributes the depth of his writing to his personal and professional experiences, drawing from the myriad situations he encountered in the entertainment industry.

The Dynamics Between Studios and Independent Creatives

In a recent interview with Canyon News, Arias explored how studios could better collaborate with independent creatives. He notes, “Studios are at their best when they treat independent creators as partners rather than vendors.” Arias emphasizes that fostering a nurturing environment for writers, directors, and producers allows for experimentation and authentic expression, ultimately leading to original storytelling. He believes that when creators feel trusted, they produce work that resonates more deeply with audiences; conversely, micromanagement stifles creativity and results in formulaic projects.

Arias doesn’t view writing as a departure from his career as an executive, but as an expansion of everything he already does. His path has always been multifaceted—lawyer, filmmaker, entrepreneur, educator—and becoming an author is simply the latest dimension of that creative and professional identity. “For me, it was never about leaving one world for another,” he reflects. “It was about embracing the power of ‘and’ instead of ‘or.'”

The Impact of Streaming Platforms

Digital streaming platforms have fundamentally transformed the entertainment landscape, and Arias recognizes their role in democratizing creative expression. He explains that while traditional theaters require projects to justify large budgets, streaming thrives on diversity and niche storytelling. His work in launching streaming services across numerous countries illuminated how global audiences engage with varied content. This realization filled him with the confidence to bring ALICIA to life, knowing that a powerful story would find its audience.

Building Collaborations and Maintaining Creative Control

Arias dispels the myth that independent creatives require agents or explicit invitations to collaborate with studios. He identifies several entry points for creators looking to build relationships, including participation in labs and fellowships, networking with independent producers, and leveraging social media platforms. He believes that maintaining creative control is possible when artists present a clear vision and well-defined projects, which can give them leverage and respect within the studio system.

The Genesis of ALICIA

The conception of ALICIA began with a single image that Arias envisioned—a missing woman whose absence is profound not merely for her identity but for the child she carries. Initially imagined as a film treatment back in 2008, the story later evolved into a full novel as Arias recognized that a literary format could capture the intricate emotional dynamics and psychological depth he wanted to explore.

The narrative centers on Claire and Andrew Cooper, a wealthy Manhattan couple who hire their undocumented housekeeper, Alicia, as a surrogate. Each character encapsulates a blend of contradictions, portraying a dynamic interplay of control, vulnerability, and survival instincts that propel the story forward.

A Cinematic Approach to Writing

Arias’s background in film profoundly influences his writing style. “I think in images,” he asserts, noting that the structure of ALICIA echoes that of a psychological thriller, replete with short chapters, layered reveals, and intense emotional moments. He aims to merge the essence of literature with cinematic pacing and structure, enhancing the reader’s experience.

Future Endeavors

As for what lies ahead, Arias is not slowing down. ALICIA is being prepared for a screen adaptation, with conversations under way with producers and industry experts. At the same time, he is actively working on a new novel, part of a trilogy that promises to be commercially viable while offering creative freedom.

In his ambitious journey of storytelling, Eddy Arias exemplifies how a versatile career can inform and enrich the creative process, allowing him to bridge the worlds of literature and film with unique authenticity.

ALICIA is available for purchase on Amazon lhttps://a.co/d/4mNl51J or the official website www.aliciathebook.com.

CALIFORNIA—For too long, politics in California — and across our nation — has been driven by division instead of direction. The loudest voices on both sides have drowned out the sensible middle, where most of us actually live. I’m running for U.S. Congress as a Moderate Republican because I believe it’s time to bring balance back — not by fighting old battles, but by focusing on practical solutions that make life better for working families, small businesses, and our communities.

Many people have asked me, “Why are you running as a Republican in California?” It’s a fair question — and one that deserves an honest answer.

I grew up believing that public service is about stewardship — about leaving our communities stronger, freer, and more prosperous than we found them. The Republican Party I identify with is one rooted in personal responsibility, fiscal common sense, and a deep respect for individual liberty. It’s the party of Ronald Reagan — one that believed in optimism, opportunity, and the idea that government should empower people, not control them.

That’s the spirit I want to restore.

Now, let me be clear: I’m not running against Democrats. I’m running for Californians — for safer neighborhoods, better schools, and an economy that rewards hard work and innovation. California is a state full of talent and promise, but too often, the decisions coming out of Sacramento and Washington make life harder, not easier. Our cost of living is through the roof. Small businesses are over regulated. Families are being priced out of the communities they helped build.

These aren’t partisan problems — they’re California problems. And they require balanced leadership to solve them.

As a moderate Republican, I can bring a fresh perspective to Washington. I can work with both parties to hold government accountable, ensure tax dollars are spent wisely, and help make California competitive again. While many in Washington talk about unity, I intend to practice it — by listening more than I speak, and by finding common ground where others see only political opportunity.

Some will say, “Wouldn’t it be easier to run as a Democrat?” Maybe. But easier isn’t the same as right. California needs a stronger two-party system, not one where every idea comes from a single perspective. When one party dominates unchecked, we lose balance — and with it, the incentive to innovate and reform. That’s why I’m proud to run as a Republican: because I believe in restoring that balance, not to fight the other side, but to make both sides better.

At the end of the day, I’m not asking for your vote because of the letter next to my name. I’m asking for your vote because I’ll fight for you — for affordability, accountability, and opportunity for all Californians. Let’s move beyond the extremes and focus on what unites us: the shared belief that our best days are still ahead.

Let’s get back to common sense.

UNITED STATES—As of late, I have been doing my absolute best to find ways to find inner peace. How can that best be done? Doing something that provides you an escape. For me that used to be movie watching, but that’s a problem as of late because I’m always distracted. I can only watch a movie without a distraction at a movie theater. As soon as I try to watch movie at home, someone wants something, people are text messaging me to death; I can’t enjoy the movie like I would hope.

With that said, I’m doing something I never expected, I’ve started reading actual books again. I swore I would never do this. Why? I majored in English as an undergraduate in college. I read so many books, whenever someone asked me if I’m reading anything I would respond: “I’ve done enough reading in my life that I don’t have to ever read again.

It really is the truth. How so? Imagine taking 5 English courses in a single semester and for each course, you have AT LEAST 5 novels if not more to read. I think one semester had a total of like 35 books I had to read between all of my classes; that was just one semester, now span that over 4 years, a lot of reading America.

However, a new book about one of my favorite TV shows is the prompt for this. I have been eagerly waiting for this book to come out for the past 3 to 4 months. Why? Who better to talk about a show desperately enjoy than an expert about the series. The book is being released on Tuesday, November 5 and as a result I cannot wait to crack this book open and start reading. I’m referring to “Behind the Mirror: Inside the World of Big Brother.”

This reality series has been a guilty pleasure of mine since season 1. I have watched every single season, even the ones that were dreadful and I have no clue how I got thru them. I am referring to “Big Brother 15, “Big Brother 19,” “Big Brother 21” and the God awful “Big Brother 22.” Rarely do books allow me to transport into their actual world, so I’m truly hoping this read of this book does just that. Where I become so enveloped into a book all the outside noise completely disappears for an hour, two hours or however long it takes me to finish reading the book.

Can I read a book in one sitting? Yes, but it has a have a hook that grabs me and refuses to let go. If it doesn’t do that, there is not much I can do America. I hate trying to push myself to read a book, so if the book is an easy read, plus an escape that is a double whammy for me. I can immerse myself in that world and visually imagine the words with actual pictures in my mind that is an exhilarating feeling.

Gosh, if you would have told me 10 years ago, I would be reading books again. I would be laughing in your face. However, you can never knock something until you try it. Don’t worry, I will do a full review of “Behind the Mirror: Inside the World of Big Brother” once I complete the book for all our readers.

UNITED STATES—Shopping for lighting used to be all about watts. Today, most fixtures and bulbs are LED, and the more important number on the box is lumens. Lumens tell you how much light you actually get, not how much power the bulb uses. Once you know how to read that number, it becomes much easier to choose fixtures that are bright enough without feeling harsh.

This guide breaks down lumens in plain language and gives practical ranges for common rooms, so you can plan lighting that fits real life at home.

What Are Lumens, Exactly?

Lumens measure the total amount of visible light from a bulb or fixture. More lumens mean a brighter light source, fewer lumens mean a dimmer one. For example:

  • A small LED night light might be around 20–50 lumens.
  • A typical LED bulb for lamps might be 600–800 lumens.
  • A strong LED for task work might be 1,000 lumens or more.

Instead of asking “How many watts do I need?”, it is better to ask “How many lumens do I need in this room?”.

Step 1: Know Your Room Size

The easiest way to estimate how much light you need is to:

  1. Measure the length and width of the room in feet.
  2. Multiply those numbers to get the square footage.

For example, a 12 ft by 15 ft living room is:

12 × 15 = 180 square feet

Once you know the area, you can apply a simple lumen range for that type of room.

Step 2: Use Simple Lumen Ranges By Room Type

Every room has a different job. A kitchen where you chop vegetables and read labels needs more light than a bedroom where you wind down at night. Below are practical ranges that work well in most homes. They assume a mix of ceiling lights, wall lights, and lamps, not just one fixture.

Living Room

Recommended total: roughly 10–20 lumens per square foot

For the 180 sq ft living room example:

180 × 10–20 lumens = 1,800–3,600 total lumens

That total might come from:

  • One main ceiling fixture around 1,200–2,000 lumens, plus
  • Two or three lamps adding another 600–1,000 lumens each.

Kitchen (General Area)

Recommended total: roughly 20–30 lumens per square foot

For a 10 ft by 12 ft kitchen (120 sq ft):

120 × 20–30 lumens = 2,400–3,600 total lumens

This usually comes from recessed lights or a central fixture plus under cabinet lighting and maybe a pendant or two.

Kitchen Island Or Work Surface

Recommended task level: often closer to 35–50 lumens per square foot directly over the work area

You do not need this level across the whole room, only where you chop, prepare, and cook.

Dining Room

Recommended total: roughly 10–20 lumens per square foot

Use the higher end of the range if walls and furniture are dark. A dimmer is very helpful here so you can brighten for homework or board games and lower the level for meals.

Bedroom

Recommended total: roughly 10–20 lumens per square foot

Bedrooms do not need the same intensity as a kitchen. Many people prefer a softer, layered approach:

  • A modest ceiling light for cleaning and getting dressed.
  • Bedside lamps or wall lights for reading.
  • Optional accent light in a corner or near a chair.

Bathroom

Recommended total: roughly 20–30 lumens per square foot

In bathrooms, the key is lighting the face well for grooming and makeup. That often means:

  • A bright vanity light at eye level or above the mirror.
  • A separate ceiling light or recessed lights for general brightness.

Hallways And Entryways

Recommended total: roughly 5–15 lumens per square foot

These areas do not need task level brightness, but they should not feel like tunnels either. Slightly brighter entries help a home feel more welcoming, especially for guests and buyers.

Step 3: Adjust For Your Home’s Real Conditions

The ranges above are starting points. You can adjust up or down depending on:

  • Wall color: Dark walls absorb more light, so you may want the higher end of the range.
  • Ceiling height: Very high ceilings usually need more total lumens to feel balanced.
  • Natural light: Rooms with big windows can get by with fewer lumens during the day but still need a solid plan for evening.
  • Age and eyesight: People who read and work a lot at home or who prefer stronger light may want a bit more in key rooms.

Step 4: Think In Layers, Not One Fixture

The total lumens for a room should come from several sources, not just a single ceiling light. A typical mix might be:

  • Ceiling fixture: Provides overall brightness.
  • Lamps: Add comfortable light near seating and beds.
  • Wall lights or under cabinet lighting: Add task and accent light where needed.

If you know your target lumen range, you can choose a main fixture that covers a good portion and then fill the rest with lamps and accent pieces.

Step 5: Use Dimmers To Give Each Room Range

Even with the right lumen levels, you will not want maximum brightness at every moment. A dimmer lets you treat your total lumens like the upper limit and then adjust downward:

  • Fuller brightness for cleaning, cooking, and projects.
  • Medium levels for everyday use.
  • Lower levels at night for relaxing or watching TV.

With dimmable LED fixtures and a sensible lumen plan, each room can handle both task work and quiet evenings without feeling either washed out or underlit.

Quick Lumen Planning Checklist

Before buying your next fixture or bulb, run through this short list:

  1. Measure the room and calculate square footage.
  2. Pick a lumen range that fits the room type (living, kitchen, bedroom, bath, hallway).
  3. Decide how much of that total will come from the main ceiling light.
  4. Add lamps and wall lights to reach the remaining lumens in a comfortable way.
  5. Choose bulb color temperatures that match your goals: warmer for relaxing, slightly cooler for tasks.
  6. Include dimmers where possible so you can fine tune levels day to day.

Ready To Put Your Lumen Plan To Use?

Understanding lumens turns lighting from guesswork into a simple, repeatable process. Once you know how much light you need and how you want it to feel, choosing fixtures and bulbs becomes far easier. You can apply these ranges to any room in your home and build a setup that looks good, functions well, and fits your routine.

If you are planning new fixtures along with better bulbs, you can find inspiration and options at Seus Lighting for chandeliers and lights . A clear lumen plan combined with well chosen pieces helps each room feel balanced from the switch on.

UNITED STATES—Moving into a new home is one of life’s most significant transitions. It marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with change, anticipation, and, at times, emotional turbulence. Whether it is your first move or your fifth, the emotional impact can be surprisingly profound.

Leaving behind familiar surroundings, routines, and memories can stir feelings of loss even as excitement builds for what lies ahead. Navigating these emotions thoughtfully allows you to embrace the experience with clarity and peace of mind.

Understanding the Emotional Journey of Moving

Every move is more than a physical shift from one location to another. It is an emotional journey that involves detachment, adjustment, and renewal. People often underestimate how emotionally charged moving can be. It represents both an ending and a beginning—a delicate balance between holding on and letting go.

The early stages of moving often bring mixed emotions. Excitement over a fresh start might be quickly followed by anxiety about change. The packing process, while practical, can also trigger memories and sentimental reflections. Objects once taken for granted may suddenly carry emotional weight as they symbolize moments from the past. Recognizing these feelings is the first step toward managing them effectively.

At the same time, the actual process of moving can be overwhelming when you are juggling logistics and emotions simultaneously. Managing both effectively requires planning and mindfulness. Taking time to reflect and prepare mentally is just as important as managing the physical move. One way to ease this dual burden is by hiring professional movers.

Delegating the heavy lifting and transportation allows you to focus on your emotional well-being and the meaningful parts of the transition, such as saying goodbye to your old space and preparing to create new memories.

To reduce stress, start with a structured plan. Make a checklist that includes both practical tasks and emotional preparations. For instance, plan farewells with neighbors or loved ones before moving day. Visit meaningful spots one last time to find closure before stepping into your next chapter.

Letting Go of the Old to Welcome the New

Moving is as much about releasing the past as it is about embracing the future. One of the most challenging parts is letting go of the attachments you have to your previous home. Each room carries stories, and each corner may remind you of moments that shaped your life. It is completely normal to feel nostalgic.

To move forward with emotional clarity, focus on gratitude rather than loss. Reflect on what your old home offered you—a safe space, joyful memories, and lessons learned. Expressing gratitude allows you to honor your experiences without being weighed down by them.

Decluttering can also have a therapeutic effect. Sorting through possessions gives you the chance to decide what truly matters and what can be left behind. This process can feel symbolic, representing a fresh emotional start.

Creating Emotional Comfort in Your New Space

Once you arrive in your new home, the first few weeks can feel disorienting. The unfamiliarity of new surroundings can leave you feeling unsettled, even if you were excited about the move. To adapt smoothly, focus on creating emotional comfort.

Start by personalizing your new space. Arrange your belongings in ways that feel familiar and comforting. Hang photos, display cherished keepsakes, and introduce scents or textures that remind you of home. These sensory cues can make the new environment feel more welcoming and help ease the transition.

Establishing new routines is equally important. Familiar habits bring a sense of stability and normalcy during times of change. Whether it is a morning cup of coffee in your favorite chair or an evening walk, small routines can help you feel grounded and connected to your new environment.

Building New Connections and a Sense of Belonging

A major emotional challenge of moving is leaving behind your social network. Friends, neighbors, and familiar faces contribute significantly to your sense of belonging. When you relocate, it can feel like you are starting over socially, which can heighten feelings of loneliness or disconnection.

To counter this, make an effort to build new connections. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, participate in local community events, or join clubs that align with your interests. Genuine interactions gradually create a sense of familiarity and comfort. Over time, these new relationships will form the foundation of your emotional life in your new surroundings.

Helping Children and Family Members Adjust

If you are moving with family, the emotional journey extends beyond your own experience. Children, in particular, can find moving stressful because it disrupts their sense of stability. They might feel anxious about leaving friends or uncertain about their new environment.

To support them, involve them in the moving process. Allowing them to pack their own belongings or choose decorations for their new room gives them a sense of control. Encourage open conversations about their feelings and validate their emotions. Reassure them that it is okay to miss the old home while also looking forward to new adventures.

Embracing the New Chapter with Positivity

As the boxes are unpacked and life begins to take shape in the new home, a sense of renewal emerges. The initial chaos gives way to calm, and the unfamiliar gradually becomes familiar. Moving offers an opportunity to redefine routines, perspectives, and even personal goals.

Instead of dwelling on what was left behind, focus on the possibilities ahead. Each room holds potential for new experiences and memories waiting to be made. By approaching the change with optimism, you turn your new home into a reflection of growth and hope.

Moving into a new home is much more than a change of address; it is a transformation of both space and self. The emotions that accompany it—joy, nostalgia, anxiety, and excitement—are all part of the human experience of growth and transition. By acknowledging your feelings, embracing the process, and allowing yourself time to adapt, you can navigate this emotional journey with strength and grace.

HOLLYWOOD—I’m not sure what is unfolding in Hollywood to the point where it is impacting retail, but I don’t like it one single bit. I knew at some point the notion of CDs would be non-existent, which you truly cannot find them in many retail establishments. Yeah, Taylor Swift’s latest album was released on CD, but it was mainly streaming for music and vinyl where the bulk of her sales came from.

Yes, it is hard to say this in 2025 that CDs are a thing of the past. I’ll be honest the last CD I purchased had to be in 2009. I simply stopped purchasing them because I got tired of wasting my money on music that wasn’t top tier. I don’t want to buy a CD that only has 2 songs worth listening to.

With that said, vinyl has witnessed an amazing explosion in the past 5 years or so. I mean before 2020 there were NOT many people at all who owned record players and utilized them to play music. Maybe the older generation like my parents, but not millennials or Gen Z. Oh, that has changed, but the problem is vinyl records are NOT AFFORDABLE. Go visit Target, Best Buy or any record store and you will see how expensive vinyl albums truly are. There is no way I’m paying $40-$60 for an album; I’m sorry that is absolutely crazy and bonkers, and I don’t care who the hell you are talking to.

A CD was like $10; the music industry wants you to pay like 5x that amount for a single album nowadays if not way more, which means you are in a situation where your money truly has to be stretched to get what it is that you truly want. This is the same sentiment for home entertainment like DVDs, Blu-Ray Discs and 4K Discs. Go to Target, you’re not going to find any of these things anymore. If you want to purchase a movie for home viewing that you can permanently own and insert into a device, good luck.

Streaming has changed that; you’re expected to purchase such items online for delivery to your home. They are no longer in stores, and I find that crazy to say the least. The same applies to Best Buy; they no longer sell any of these items in store, I think within the last month or two they have placed some DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and 4K discs of classic movies on their website via third parties for purchase.

Like I don’t understand some retail establishments. It feels like they want Amazon to be the kind of all things you buy. Yes, you can get stuff quicker and it can be delivered directly to your home. You know what else you can do: go to the actual establishment and buy it yourself. This is why we continue to see so many brick-and-mortar establishments go out of business and close their doors. The things you want to buy you cannot find them in stores at all.

I like buying movies; I like having them as collectibles. I’m a movie collector, but it has literally been a year since the last movie I purchased on Blu-Ray. Why? No retailers advertise them anymore, and you’ll be lucky to find one in stores and the prices are just, “Ridiculous, I’m sorry.” I shouldn’t have to go to like 6 to 7 retailers to try to find something that used to be the norm.

However, you don’t have many electronic retail establishments anymore. I mean I have Best Buy, Target, Walmart (to a degree), FYE (to the stores that are still around) and that’s it. If you know any others, please let me know because I’m listening. Costco and Sam’s Club don’t fall into that group because they don’t really sell those things. You can only purchase so many things on streaming services/devices because you’re going to RUN OUT OF SPACE. I will be damned if I am going to delete or get rid of things I spent my hard money on when it comes to entertainment.

Hello Hollywood and music industry, there is still money to be made from purchasing movies and music beyond on the streaming platforms. If there are any retailers who want to consider a new business establishment that sells such things, hate to say it, but you could have a money maker on your hands.

LOS ANGELES—So if you need top-notch, reliable automotive service, then Clean Truck Road Flex & AC is the place for you.

The business is located downtown like the fashion district. We are part of GenZ. The business started after I took the two-year automotive program for gasoline vehicles mainly at LA TRADE TECH school to gain a job in the field and support my hobby of fixing cars up and upkeeping the “classics.”

Bryan did that and got his certificate along with the “Student ASE” certificate. Not counting for actual “ASE,” but good for employers to see, then he separately took the SMOG check classes to be an inspector and SMOG repair tech and got certified as a SMOG inspector and have been doing it for more than 3 years.

Many people don’t know, for smog repair, the state was taking forever to accept Bryan’s application to take the state test to be certified, but Bryan still plans to do that.

In 2025, the Clean Truck Check program came along and Bryan got certified and has done ~20 trucks in the job he currently has now. In school, he got MACS certified for A/C to buy refrigerant and service HVAC system on automotive vehicles and he and the family always wanted to open a shop either smog or repair, but preferably both.

Bryan believes mobile service can help build on that currently doing automotive HVAC SERVICE and clean truck check service, maybe looking to expand to mobile mechanic and AC for residential areas because so many people contacted our company for that as well, but still having a shop will be the goal.

Some services they provide include cleaner air (cooling air).

SANTA MONICA—As the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s and dementia continues to climb, one Santa Monica center is offering something families desperately need: support, connection, and compassion.

A New Kind of Day Program Comes to Santa Monica

Elder-Well® Adult Day Program recently opened its doors on Wilshire Boulevard, bringing a warm, home-like environment to older adults in the Westside community. The center offers full- and half-day programs filled with meaningful engagement, social connection, and wellness support — all designed to help participants live each day with purpose and joy.

But Elder-Well is more than just a day program. It’s a lifeline for caregivers, too. For the sons, daughters, and spouses balancing the demands of caring for an aging loved one, Elder-Well provides trusted daytime care and the precious gift of time — to work, rest, or simply breathe.

Inspired by Personal Experience

Elder-Well Santa Monica is led by Mary Anne Roberto, a Certified Dementia Specialist who cared for her own mother through Alzheimer’s. “You don’t know what you’re in for until you’re living it,” Roberto shares. “Families often feel lost, exhausted, and alone. Elder-Well was created to change that — to be a place where caregivers feel supported and their loved ones feel seen and valued.”

After discovering the nationally recognized Elder-Well® model, Roberto knew she wanted to bring it to Southern California. She is now the first Elder-Well franchisee in the state, and she opened the Santa Monica location in honor of her mother.

Connection, Creativity, and Care

Each day at Elder-Well is carefully designed around the belief that older adults thrive when they stay connected — socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Participants enjoy creative arts, music, games, movement, and sensory experiences tailored to their interests and abilities.

One of the center’s most popular programs, “Wellness Wednesdays,” is held in partnership with the Beauty Bus Foundation and The Memory Connection. Participants enjoy complimentary pampering services such as haircuts, mini-manicures, and facials — creating moments of confidence, joy, and human connection that truly brighten the week.

“We’ve seen incredible transformations,” Roberto says. “Someone who arrives quiet and withdrawn in the morning leaves smiling and engaged. That’s what Elder-Well is all about — restoring dignity and connection.”

The Beauty Bus provides free professional salon services to Elder-Well clients and their caregivers every Wednesday.

A Support System for the Sandwich Generation

Elder-Well’s impact reaches beyond its participants. The center is designed to support the growing “sandwich generation” — adults who are simultaneously raising children and caring for aging parents. Flexible schedules and affordable options help families find balance, while knowing their loved one is safe, stimulated, and cared for.

Elder-Well Santa Monica also collaborates with local nonprofits, healthcare professionals, and city partners to ensure older adults and caregivers have access to resources for respite, transportation, and ongoing community engagement.

A Mission Aligned with Alzheimer’s Awareness

With November recognized as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Elder-Well is amplifying its commitment to education, advocacy, and support. The center will participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, November 2, alongside local families and community members.

“This month reminds us how important it is to come together,” Roberto says. “There’s strength in community — and hope in every step we take together.”

A Welcoming Home for the Community

Elder-Well Santa Monica invites older adults who may be experiencing memory changes, social isolation, or simply seeking a meaningful place to spend their day. Whether it’s enjoying a home-cooked lunch, painting a canvas, or laughing with new friends, participants find belonging and purpose at Elder-Well.

“Elder-Well was built from love and lived experience,” says Roberto. “We’ve walked this journey ourselves, and we’re here to walk it with others.”

UNITED STATES—Here at the Canyon News we pride ourselves in reporting the news to the readers in our coverage zone, in the state of California and around the world. Now, we need your help more than ever, and we are hopeful our readers will come through for us. A storage unit we had at Trojan Storage in Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730 Space D125 was recently sold during an auction without our knowledge.

It contained very personal items like irreplaceable family photos, items collected since childhood, memorabilia of a mother and father who are no longer with us, her mother’s remains were also inside the unit, and we are desperately hoping to connect with the person who has those items, so they are returned. While they have no value, the emotional connection is more than words can express.

Another important item we are hoping to recollect is the mother’s wedding dress which was passed down in hopes of someone wearing the prized possession on their wedding day. This individual is suffering from a terminal lung disease and all she wants is to have these items back in her possession.

Personal mementos were also inside the storage unit that if anyone who has them, we are asking you to contact us so that we can negotiate to get them back. Items inside this storage unit were all the individual had of her family who are no longer here. They are the sole survivor of their family and these items being gone is beyond emotionally devastating.

The items were auctioned off on August 20, 2025. No prior knowledge was provided to us about the auction or an auction ID#. Apparently, there was an issue with payment for the storage unit, that we were not made aware of despite payment details for the account being stored on file. We expected the company to contact us by phone after more than 12 years as a loyal customer to alert us such an issue, but that never transpired in any capacity.

Any help anyone out there can provide or if you are the person who has these items please assist us in getting back these prized possessions. This loss has been devastating, so to recoup the family memorabilia at the very least would mean the world to us.

If you are the individual who purchased the storage unit or you have these items, we are asking that you please contact us via email at danny@canyon-news.com or you can also reach us via TEXT at (213) 910-1370 so we can work out something, as we will pay for the return of all items. We much appreciate any assistance with this matter.

UNITED STATES—We are about to enter the Lupe zone, a place where the pinnacle of human achievement is matched by the deepest canyons of depravity. It’s about time to forget about time, slide rules and space, and go into the deep reaches of Lupe’s mind… My handler during the longueurs of a typical week, lives in a constant state of smoldering anxiety. He goes absolutely mad when not able to locate the halter of the little dog, my tiny companion DeVille. That’s what you get for listening to all those wanton suggestions of neighbors who mention, “He will be so much more comfortable without the halter.” Lacking the wisdom to ignore all the suggestions that people have to offer, he caves in and takes it off. Only to hyperventilate and get borderline hysterical when the aqua blue halter for little Baby DeVille is nowhere to be found.

The white-bearded one (it used to give the impression of being brown), before my residence here began in late puppyhood) is frantic. Boiling with animosity for heeding “helpful” advice spouted by busybodies, then recriminating himself for harboring the same animosity for those people. How could he stoop as low as they? How indeed. What a cast of rogues they were. The Professor, Ginger and the rest, and now there were strangers, too, who breezed in for a rented stay. It was so easy to ignore them and not greet them as strangers, and the alienation grew like the hole in the ozone. When my handler finally bequeathed the modicum of recognition on one middle-aged woman, enquiring how long she was to stay, the reply was blunt.

“I’m leaving tonight.”

“Well, I guess I caught you in in the nick of time.”

Au revoir… Bon voyage.

He stubbed his toe on a boulder placed alongside the walkway to the street. Cursed himself for this unholy war between misanthropy and bonhomie. And why the devil had the catman, the neighbor with a fondness for felines over people, boast of the virtues of staying away from dogs, and to by all means to stay away from the dishwater blond visitor from Colorado, Wisconsin, Dallas, Fort Worth. Who knew? But is made the brief encounter final encounter rebellious and satisfying.

Dogs, you know shed hair. They pee. They defecate prolifically.

Yes, it was humiliating to walk into the white tiled kitchen and step into a turd. It made the hours away from the cozy home a mild but uninterrupted torture. What will I find when I come home. What will be there? No, it is not my purpose to drive Mister to insanity, but I’ll say he’s doing a pretty good job of it himself.

Now take Sunday, a wonderful day with blase corners for most folks. He left me to blob around the house, glued to the floor, while parading the little fella DeVille in that place he goes every Sunday. That’s cause I obey no man. The dangle of a leash in front of me will spark no obedient leap like that lapdog DeVille. And last Sunday DeVille vanished into thin air. High and low he looked and nowhere was a trace of the perky Chuihuahua-terrier.

To be continued…

LOS ANGELES—Our Congressional Representative, Brad Sherman (D) CA-32, has been in Washington, D.C. for 15-Terms, 30-Years. Do you know who he is? He is a living example of what you get when you live in a one-party state with no congressional term limits. He has been around forever and done nothing. No decision he has ever made in three decades has been seriously challenged by anyone. He has had to show no accountability…and he has made many unbelievably bad and costly decisions for us. And now, he has left us in a mess.

Sherman has learned how to “quietly” do nothing. He distances himself from controversy. He’s not a leader…He’s a follower. Not a thinker…A party “yes man.” He always shows up one day too late to act as if he’s helping, but instead, he awkwardly just stands there doing nothing with his goofy smile.

How much has he cost you personally? As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, Sherman has consistently led the fight to kill Bitcoin and all Cryptocurrencies. In fact, having so many financial institutions as supporters, he has advocated “outlawing” digital currencies. So, as it turns out, he has been on the wrong side of history for over 15 years. He has tried to stop the future. Bitcoin started trading in July of 2010 for $0.05 per coin. If you had bought just one Bitcoin, then or even in 2016 (just nine years ago) for $400 a coin it would be worth $124,005 today. So much for his negative rhetoric, hollow scare tactics, financial advice, and proposed killer legislation.

He chimed in with the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris LIE that the border was secure when in fact it wasn’t, and they knew it. He kept silent when Biden struggled mentally in his campaign. He claims to support Israel…sometimes. He continues to stall in leading a solution to the Metro Transit Project connecting the San Fernando Valley to LA’s West side. The endless delays have been bogged down by his accountant-due-diligence mentality instead of having an assertive vision with momentum to get it done.

As a career politician who has never earned more than $174,000 a year, he has a home in Los Angeles and a home in Washington, D.C. worth an estimated $14 Million dollars. How is that mathematically possible? Well, I said he was an accountant.

Regarding the Palisades and Malibu fires, I agree with real estate billionaire and former LA Mayoral candidate, Rick Caruso, who proclaims, “If it’s predictable it’s preventable.” Sherman and Mayor Karen Bass, both career politicians, don’t practice preventive governance, but instead, they rely on remedial governance.

Sherman claims and implies that Sherman Oaks and Sherman Way were named after him and his family. That’s simply a lie. Sherman Oaks and Sherman Way were named after General Moses Hazeltine Sherman (1853-1932). He was a land developer and entrepreneur from Vermont who came to California in the late 1800s and founded Sherman Oaks development. If Brad Sherman will lie about a town being named after him and his family, what else will he lie about?

It’s time for a change. My name is Larry Thompson, and I am running for United States Congress. This will be my second attempt to unseat Sherman. In the recent 2024 election, I received over 108,000 votes, which is the most votes ever received by a candidate running against him.

With your help, I plan to defeat him this time.

I am a Christian first. A Conservative second. A Republican third.

I am a member of Turning Point USA and Stand With Crypto . I am a compassionate, intelligent, experienced businessman who uses Common Sense. I am running for Congress to awaken, organize, and unite the dissatisfied Democratic voter, the canceled conservative voter, and the undecided No Party Preference voter. Visit: www.LarryThompsonForCongress.com

I have been endorsed by the California Republican Party, the Los Angeles County Republican Party, the Ventura County Republican Party, California Young Republicans, California College Republicans, Los Angeles County Young Republicans, the American Independent Party, Brock Pierce, Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, David Hernandez, Chairman of the Los Angeles Hispanic Republican Club, and Regional Vice Chair of CAGOP’s Los Angeles County, and Kelsey Grammer, among many others. Visit my 32-Point Political Vision at Larry Thompson For Congress – 32 Points

Democrats and Non-Party Preference voters, I believe I will earn all or most of the Republican votes, but I cannot win without your votes also. You have voted for Sherman for 30 years…! What about giving me a shot? My term would only be for two years. If I don’t do a better job than him, vote me out in 2028 and put him or another Democrat back in.

California’s District 32, where I am running against Sherman, encompasses at this time the communities of Bel-Air, Bell Canyon, Beverly Glen, Brentwood, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Encino, Malibu, North Hills, Northridge, Pacific Palisades, Reseda, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Tarzana, Topanga, West Hills, Winnetka, and Woodland Hills. The district traditionally trends Democratic by a large margin of 70-30.

I know, it’s difficult to make a party change. Change isn’t just difficult. Sometimes, it feels impossible.

You know the feeling. You make a bold decision — to eat healthier, end a toxic relationship, move to a new city, leave that job, start that business, finally go after the life you keep pretending, you’re not afraid of. You start out strong, your heart full of conviction. But weeks—or even days—later, you find yourself back where you started, sabotaging your progress or convincing yourself it was never worth it anyway. And then comes the shame.

You wonder why everyone else seems to manage change so gracefully while you’re drowning in self-doubt. You ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” But the truth is: nothing is wrong with you. Change is not a straight path. It is a reckoning. A grief. A rebirth. A neurological, psychological, and emotional storm that stirs up every part of your identity. It’s not that you’re weak. It’s that you’re human.

American author, speaker, and pastor, Dr. John Maxwell, says, “When it comes to change, there are three seasons of timing: People change 1. when they hurt enough that they have to, 2. when they learn enough that they want to, and 3. when they receive enough that they are able to.”

Are you in any one of these three seasons?

Isn’t it time you tried something new to build a future for you and your children? Sometimes the person that brought you here isn’t the person you need to guide you forward.

Think about it. Vote for change. Vote for Larry Thompson for Congress.

UNITED STATES—It might seem hard, but it is not as hard as you think, it just takes a bit of creativity in the culinary universe. So many of us tend to get bogged down by thinking you must have these ingredients to create a satisfying dish, but that is not always the case. There are things in your fridge, there are things in your cabinet. When you combine those ingredients you can create an entree, a side and potentially a desert.

Let me give you a prime example: cucumbers. I love cucumbers, but I hate them at the same time because I feel like I’m always having to toss them out because I don’t use them up in time. I used to only utilize cucumbers for a salad, but that has since changed with me utilizing them to juice and make smoothies. A refreshing drink is satisfying, but it’s not food. That is where taking some cucumbers and tomatoes and making a cucumber/tomato salad.

It is indeed refreshing, and if you want to make it tastier, throw in some diced watermelon and perhaps a few pieces of crumbled feta cheese. Cucumbers are from the melon family, so it’s easy to mesh the two into something sweet, savory and healthy at the same time that is not processed. For example, this week I knew I wanted to cook something satiating for the start of the week. I had an ear of corn that I needed to use, I had two red skin potatoes, and I had some ground chuck that needed to be cooked.

At first, I thought about doing a meatloaf, but I didn’t want something too heavy. So, I switched to making meatballs. I utilized a white onion I had, some garlic, breadcrumbs in the cabinet and a few spices. I didn’t cook them with gravy I did my meatballs with a tomato sauce with crushed tomatoes. I’m not a fan of gravy. I do not like it, and not it’s not because I don’t know how to cook it. Gravy is just yucky to me, and I’d rather not utilize tons of butter and flour. So fresh tomatoes, cooked down with some herbs and spices, partially cook the meatballs and then finish them off in the tomato sauce.

Diced the red skin potatoes and then I utilized them to make mashed potatoes, with a sampling of pepper, butter, and 1/2 percent milk. I know what many of you are thinking, what about your vegetable? I split up that ear of corn, and it became three small portions, and I just ate a third of the corn. I was satisfied with what I ate, and I was full with a little bit of everything. So much to the point that I had leftovers, which is always a plus people.

I’m starting to learn you don’t have to go overboard at the grocery store getting what you think are top tier ingredients to craft a delicious meal. Sometimes the cheaper or off-brand items work just as well. It is all about how you flavor things. I’m not a big salt person; I actually do my best to limit any salt that I place on food. I’m more about herbs and spices, substituting the salt that so many Americans adore for better substitutes.

I hate wasting food, and the older I get the more frugal I have become with my dollars doing my best to not waste my money and utilize the ingredients that I am purchasing to craft not just a single dish, but multiple dishes.

HOLLYWOOD—I hate to say it, but I’m going to say it, movie critics can be annoying. I feel the days of actual film criticism has died as we take those scholars out the window to usher in a generation of people who ‘LOVE MOVIES’ and they give their critical analysis. People ask me all the time; do you ever take the advice of a critic when it comes to see a movie?

The simple answer is: NO! Film is subjective, it is based on one’s opinions and personal tastes. It is art, and simply put, people are always going to have various opinions about art, especially when you get into the realm of TV and cinema. There are indeed films that are classics, but that is another column and another time and date for us to truly get into that argument.

Unlike many of the actual movie critics out there today, I labored myself as an undergraduate through film school, actually taking classes all about cinema from introduction to film, to film history, film criticism, film theory, studies in film gender, screenwriting and so much more. I was in the trenches and when I say my criticism and theory course challenged me in ways I never expected, jeez it would be an understatement.

You’re talking about a person who analyzed Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” so much it took the actual enjoyment out of the movie, once I was able to decipher what Hitchcock was actually saying about his leading lady in Tippi Hedren, whose character was in essence sexually promiscuous. Most viewers might not see it, but there are a ton of scenes I could show and explore for you where you will understand it much more, explaining why the ‘birds’ flocked to this town and were attacking.

I deciphered “Mildred Pierce” so much for a critical essay, it felt like it was going to destroy my love for film noir because I was constantly rewinding and analyzing scenes in that movie that highlight the film’s title character to her portrayer, Joan Crawford, and the idea of stardom. It seems like a stretch, but my oral argument wowed, not just my classmates, but my professor, and that is not me simply tooting my horn.

A true critic digs deep, they go beyond just that troupe of liking the movie or not, or explaining why it entertains versus why it doesn’t. Your goal is to figure out with precise detail(s) as a movie critic what this movie is trying to say to society or about society, and the general public as a whole. I know that may sound crazy, but even some of the worst of the worst, and movies that should have never been made, have some odd message. It might be a message about depravity, sexuality, violence, narcissism, hatred, racism, environmental destruction or something outlandish you never expected like self-loathing.

I am not the critic that is simply going to agree that a movie is great because all the critics out there loved it. I will call a spade a spade, as much as it may pain me sometimes to actual do it. I’m a fan of horror, but Rob Zombie’s “Halloween II” was easily one of the worst movies I watched in 2009. Was it the worst horror movie ever, no, but it was an absolute failure, and I enjoyed the previously flick, even though it was too focused on nostalgia instead of delivering something fresh and new.

I hated the 2010 flick “A Nightmare on Elm Street” which followed similar troupes of nostalgia instead of bringing something fresh and new to an iconic villain and idea. “Get Out” was NOT my cup of tea, it was an enjoyable movie, but it was not the horror flick everyone touted it to be. IT WAS NOT HORROR PEOPLE, that was a psychological thriller! They are not the same thing, so please stop grouping those categories together like there is no difference.

This year’s Best Picture winner “Anora” was ok, but it didn’t punch me in the gut like “Conclave” did. Also just look at Oscar’s history when it comes to praising work that deals with the sex industry. You get movies like “Klute” and “Cabaret” winning Oscars for Best Actress, as well as “Monster” in 2004 that delivered Charlize Theron her Best Actress victory. There are trends out there that people don’t always pay attention to, but if you look closer you can see them.

I think sometimes critics are afraid to say what they’re really thinking because they get to see all these advance movie screenings without actually having to pay for them. Well, the studios can easily stop that and force them to pay out of pocket, like I do when I see a movie, and I do a critical analysis of the film. If I have to pay $12-$20 to see a movie, those ‘critics’ and I QUOTE that for a reason, they should be doing the same. It sometimes feels like you have those who are just in the room to be in the room with the others, and that elitist crap, who cares.

Being a critic of cinema doesn’t make you any better than the everyday person. Yeah, you might see and decipher some things others don’t, but let’s be honest how many critics actually do the work to make that happen, really?

GLENDALE, CA—At the corner of San Fernando Road and Allen Avenue in Glendale, a small building built in 1951 has come back to life. It now houses Little Bear, a modern Italian fast casual spot with a big heart and even bigger flavor.

Chef Sevan Abdessian, who once transformed Glendale’s dining scene with Recess Eatery, is back. And this time, he’s bringing hand-crafted pastas, fresh sandwiches, and bright seasonal salads in a space that feels welcoming and sunlit, just like his food.

“I’ve always loved pasta,” said Chef Abdessian. “This space gave me the chance to focus on Italian cuisine and fresh pastas. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that inspire you. In this case it was the building, built in 1951 with some very cool elements.”

Little Bear opened on July 21 and has been filling plates and hearts ever since.

Chef Sevan’s menu is grounded in simplicity. The dishes start with whole, locally sourced ingredients and feature comforting, recognizable flavors with subtle global inspiration.

The food is fresh, colorful, and casual. House made pastas and sandwiches start at just eight dollars, with mains and salads that rarely climb above fifteen. “We are a modern fast casual restaurant focusing on whole ingredients,” he said.

There’s no need for white tablecloths or reservations. It’s a walk-in, cashless space with limited indoor seating and a sunny patio. And for those on the go, pickup and delivery are just a click away. “We have limited seating inside and on the patio but have a robust pickup and delivery service,” said Chef Sevan.

Little Bear is more than a restaurant. It’s a homecoming. Chef Sevan was raised in Glendale. He made his name with Recess Eatery on Brand Boulevard, a now-closed restaurant that once helped redefine dining in the city.

As the Los Angeles Times noted during Recess’s heyday, “Chef Sevan Abdessian brought a seasonal sensibility to a space where diners lingered in garden patios and took comfort in inventive versions of old favorites.” LAist once praised the spot’s eclectic menu and rustic feel, calling it “a needed breath of fresh air in Glendale.”

“Recess was my first restaurant,” he said. “It really changed the dining landscape in Glendale. Fresh organic ingredients in a light-filled intimate dining area and beautiful garden.”

That spirit carries into Little Bear. The food is casual but thoughtful. The vibe is relaxed but intentional.

Behind the restaurant’s operations is Tamar Kevonian, Sevan’s partner in business and in life. “I sort of fell into the restaurant business through my relationship with Sevan,” she said. “I learned fast. At Recess, I expanded operations and events. Here at Little Bear, I still give feedback on the menu.”

They both knew Glendale would be their home again. “We live here. We like the city and all it offers. And we wanted to be part of that again in a significant way.”

Even six years after Recess closed to make way for hotel development, Glendale locals still ask about it. “Since 2016, people have approached us with nostalgic memories about Recess,” Tamar said. “There is a long memory in Glendale. Little Bear is our way of coming back.”

Little Bear is cashless and fast casual. It’s open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. While there’s no brunch service or themed dinners just yet, the team occasionally hosts private evening events and pop-ups. If you’re lucky, you might get invited to one.

Whether you’re grabbing a sandwich before work, picking up pasta for dinner, or spending an afternoon on the patio with coffee and a salad, Little Bear makes it feel easy. It’s neighborhood food made with chef-level care.

As Chef Sevan puts it: “Little Bear is a continuation of everything I’ve learned over the years—classic training, creative freedom, and a deep connection to the communities we serve. It’s a place where comfort food meets inspiration. Where every dish tells a story.”

And that story starts on San Fernando Road, with fresh pasta, soft light, and the smell of roasted garlic in the air.

If you want fresh pasta that doesn’t feel fussy, and a space that feels like home, go to Little Bear. Your taste buds will thank you.

Little Bear is located at 6800 San Fernando Rd., Glendale, CA 91201. To learn more, visit the website or call (818) 425-1284.

UNITED STATES—We all watched as the flag came by. It was the first thing in the parade, of course. Great big one, carried by two of the kids from the ROTC at the high school. The bands followed, along with the mounted patrol, the ski patrol in their summer-weight jackets, the float with the princesses on it, and the local kids leading dogs and cats – some rather reluctantly – on leashes.

For some of us, the Fourth of July parade is a chance to see just how much the local kids have grown over the past year. For others, it’s a chance to see something that is really ours. This is our parade. These are our people. These are the people who make our little valley unique in the whole world. This is a chance for us all to get together and celebrate us, you know?

But all that comes later. What comes first on this day above all others is the American flag. Oh, it’s a great big one. Where they found this one, I don’t know, but it takes two high school boys to carry it. It really doesn’t matter what size it is, because it’s what it means to us that counts.

To Herb over there, there are memories of his terrible days in Korea, I’m sure, and the wounds that sent him home early. To Doc, maybe it’s the way the G.I. Bill let him go back to college and fulfill his life’s dream of taking care of sick people.

To Annette, over across the street there, there is a look in her eyes that tells us that flag meant she could protest whatever the complaint-du-jour was during her college days. She knows there are few places in the world this tolerant of unpopular opinions.

There’s Dewey down on the corner. He’s got his hand over his heart as the flag goes by. Maybe he’s thinking of a country that will allow him to start a business with a borrowed pickup and a shovel and supply our flower beds with fertilizer. He sure hasn’t been able to make anything else work for him, so far.

But these are just speculations, because what the flag means to each of us is personal. We don’t have to tell anyone. We never have to explain. We even have the freedom not to be here looking as the flag goes by.

It’s an American thing. A very private American moment.

UNITED STATES—Recently, I had 24 hours to myself, and it was something that I desperately needed. The past six weeks have been chaotic beyond chaotic. So, you might be asking, what did you do? I went to one of my favorite places in the world. It is an annual trip for the family each year, where we visit Cedar Point. I wouldn’t call myself an adrenaline junkie, but I love the notion of being on a roller coaster and not in control.

Hmm, maybe you can say I am indeed an adrenaline junkie. I will say the older I get; I never lose that thrill of getting on a roller coaster. I was a bit peeved that the park’s newest ride, Siren’s Curse, which has a track, that disconnects and reconnects was not open, but it was actively being tested throughout the day. It doesn’t open until June 28 unfortunately.

However, I got to see the coaster in full action right in front of my eyes. I came to the realization that as steep as the drop appears in those videos you watch online, it’s nothing compared to what you actually see in person. It’s more so the excitement of looking straight down before going into a wicked twist and moving at rocket speeds that makes the ride so exciting.

However, I didn’t let that bummer take me down because I wanted to ride and that’s exactly what I did with my siblings and nieces. I will admit, I rarely look down on a roller coaster, I just don’t like the feeling of heights especially when you are 200, 300 or even 400 feet in the air, and it doesn’t help that you’re surrounded by water. This typically holds true for the Magnum XL and the Millennium Force. The Magnum I can probably look down, the Millennium Force, not so much.

Why? If you’re on the left cart (which I normally am), you’re looking at Lake Erie and gosh, is it scary as hell to witness. The great thing is the roller coaster moves at a rocket speed. It is not a slow trek to the top like the Magnum XL which causes the anxiety a bit more, but once you drop and you feel the butterflies and that gut punch in the stomach, it is unlike any feeling in the world.

For some reason, people don’t ride the Magnum XL, and I have no idea why. We didn’t even have to wait in line, and I got on the ride twice within five minutes if not sooner both times. I love it, but I hate it too, because you feel the aftereffects the next day. It has this notion of going up and down quite rough and you feel it in your legs, thighs and entire body the next day. I actually had a few bruises, but I love it. I can’t explain it, I know it’s mind-boggling.

The same goes for one of my favorite rides which is the Skyhawk, which propels you back and forth like a seesaw, but to the tune of 125 feet in the air. You go higher each time, and when you reach that peak and you’re held in the air for a couple of a seconds looking down, oh, it’s scary, but exhilarating as hell. I just love it. Same with the Ocean Motion, which is similar, but not as high, but the butterflies are still there.

There was truly only one ride where I had to wait a decent time frame, which was the Millennium Force, around 35 minutes. I remember back in the day when I used to go to Cedar Point, we would wait three to four hours to get on one roller coaster. Trust me I know, it’s crazy.

That was not my biggest frustration. It was the fact that I had to wait one hour and 45 minutes for the Top Thrill 2. It was the revamped version of the Dragster, that already peaks at 420 feet, after taking off going more than 120 mph. Yeah, I know its lunacy, but its adrenaline unlike anything you can put into words. The revamped version now takes you forward, backwards and forward again before you plummet over 400 plus feet in the air.

We waited nearly two hours and never got on the ride. I was livid because that was two hours I could have spent riding other coasters and rides. There is nothing worse than feeling like you’ve wasted time, and you can’t get it back. Making matters worse, was the fact that we were just mere feet from getting to the platform to get on the ride people! I guess next time, but that is the problem with a ride that relies on hydraulics. You never know when things will go out.

Beyond some of the coasters I mentioned, we also rode the Raptor, the Blue Streak, the Gemini, the Rougaru, Power Tower, Wild Mouse, Iron Dragon, Valravn, and a few other rides in the mix. Out of the ones that I rode, I love the Valravn, that 90-degree tilt drop scares the hell out of me; you don’t just feel butterflies in your stomach, but you feel every bit of it.

I didn’t get on the Maverick, Steel Vengeance, Gatekeeper or Corkscrew. Didn’t care much about the Corkscrew, but the Gatekeeper was down, and the other two just always has a long, long wait. The Maverick and Steel Vengeance are fun ones because of the speed and twisted turns that can be so smooth, you almost feel like you’re going to fall off the ride.

Besides the rides, we had the carnival food. I love natural cut French Fries, I love a corn dog, I love the burgers, the cotton candy, pretzels, popcorn, chicken tenders and so much more. Yes, I ate, but I think I burned more calories with all the walking that I did. Trust me I did a lot of walking. To the back of the park, to the front, back to the back, back to the front and to the back again. We were at the park around 10 hours, and when we left, I was burnt out, exhausted and ready for sleep.

However, I loved every minute of it. Like my niece said, is it possible to get on every single ride at the park in a single day? It’s possible, but you got to be there as soon as the park opens, and you have to be strategic. I used to be the person to ride whatever was open right when I got to the park, but I’ve realized, its important to head to the back and then move towards the front. Why? The rides in the back tend to have those 90-to-120-minute waits. Not fun, especially in the summer heat. The day we went was perfect weather, nice windy breeze and about 73 degrees.

Will I return this year? I don’t know, but if the opportunity arises trust me I will. Just a reminder, a 100 drop is nothing to me, 200 feet, I love it, but it doesn’t kill me, when you get to 300 and up, oh, you feel it, but I love each adrenaline rush that comes with it America.

UNITED STATES—Citing only speculative statements from former members to generalize the whole… “The church’s sincere response was reduced to just two lines.” “A fair reporting and journalistic practice must be established to protect freedom of religion and people of faith.”

On April 9, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, French Branch, issued an official statement saying that the French Daily Le Parisien had seriously damaged the reputation of the church and its members through a distorted report published on April 7. The church criticized the article for being biased, claiming it excessively highlighted the one-sided claims of former members while barely reflecting the true nature of the faith community.

The controversial article, titled “They Treated Us Like Animals,” labeled the Shincheonji Church of Jesus as one of the “problematic evangelical groups” in France, based on the personal testimony of an anonymous former member. The article included claims about training camps, social isolation, and financial demands. However, the church pointed out that its official stance was reduced to just two sentences in the report.

A church representative stated, “We submitted a thorough written response consisting of several thousand characters to the 12 questions the reporter had sent in advance. However, only two sentences from that response were included in the article.” They criticized the report, saying, “This amounts to less than 1% of the full response and severely limited the opportunity for readers to gain a balanced perspective.” The representative also added, “Given that the article was published just four hours after we sent our reply, it appears that the report was a premeditated, one-sided smear piece.”

He continued, “If the written response was insufficient, the reporter could have visited the church in person to observe the faith community firsthand and listen directly to the voices of current members.” He added, “The church is always ready to engage in open communication with the media.”

To reflect the actual experiences of its members, the church also shared testimonies from those currently practicing their faith. Teresa (29), who has been attending the Paris branch for six years, said, “Faith is something you do voluntarily. Through this church, I’ve come to truly understand God and learned how to live as a light in the world as one of His people.”

Another member, Axel (30), shared, “Before coming to Shincheonji Church, I was searching for the meaning of my life. Since starting my faith here, I’ve come to understand what God truly wants, and I genuinely enjoy doing His work. While carrying out my mission, I’ve still been able to travel—which I love—and I even met my wife at church. I’m truly living a fulfilling life.”

Regarding the article’s headline, “They Treated Us Like Animals,” the church stated, “Both the church and its members were deeply shocked and taken aback by that expression. No one has ever been treated in such a way, nor do they believe they have. It was simply a provocative headline meant to attract attention.” The church further explained, “In reality, we do not tolerate any threats or stigmatization toward former members. A culture of respecting individual choices, even after someone leaves, is well established.”

The church also refuted the claim mentioned in the article that “she broke up with her boyfriend at the church’s request,” stating, “That is not true.” They explained, “The man in question was also a member attending the church at the time, and from what we understand, he actually wanted to get married. However, the woman said she wasn’t ready for marriage at that point. The breakup was a result of personal discussions and individual faith-related considerations between the two, and the church never influenced or forced any decision.”

The church emphasized, “Dating and marriage are personal matters based on autonomy and responsibility. Linking such decisions to church control is simply inaccurate.”

The church also raised concerns about parts of the interview that included situations the interviewee had not actually experienced. “A photo showing someone with their feet on a radiator was reported as an example of ‘punishment,’ but this photo has nothing to do with any form of discipline and was taken even before the interviewee joined the church.”

They further explained, “The person in the photo is a male member who is still actively practicing his faith. At the time, he was simply showing off that he could pose like that, and someone took the picture for fun. After seeing the article, he was shocked. He plans to file an official complaint with the media outlet for using his photo without consent and misrepresenting its context.”

The church stated, “It is deeply regrettable that the media quoted and reported such statements without proper fact-checking, as it can create a biased perception among readers that the entire Shincheonji Church of Jesus is an irrational organization.”

Regarding the “training camp” mentioned in the article, the church clarified, “The program was a short-term training voluntarily attended by certain mission workers who desired spiritual growth.” They explained, “It consisted of activities such as morning prayer and Scripture meditation. Participants were free to leave the camp at any time, and there was absolutely no physical punishment or coercion involved. However, recognizing the potential for misunderstanding from outside perspectives, the church has since discontinued the program.”

The church also refuted claims regarding the collection of personal information, restrictions on internet use, and encouragement of family disconnection, stating, “These allegations are completely untrue. Apart from the minimum information necessary for faith counseling, no personal data is collected.”

The church emphasized, “We have never restricted internet use or external relationships. On the contrary, we encourage our members to lead exemplary lives within their families and society.”

Regarding the use of the name “ECA Academy,” the church explained, “It was the name of a Bible education program temporarily used in 2019. At the beginning of the course, it was clearly stated that the program was affiliated with the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, and participation in the church afterward was left entirely up to the individual’s choice.”

In response to the recent report, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, French Branch, called on the media to uphold the following principles:

  • Conduct comprehensive coverage that reflects diverse perspectives and experiences;
  • Accurately and fully represent the church’s official statements and responses;
  • Provide fair opportunities to share the real experiences and voices of current members;
  • Establish a reporting culture that respects freedom of religion and the dignity of believers;
  • Avoid the use of provocative language and headlines that promote prejudice.

A church representative stated, “Biased reporting on a particular religion or faith community can impose stigma and prejudice on sincere believers, ultimately undermining religious freedom and human rights.” He emphasized, “The media should avoid sensational approaches that incite hatred and instead strive to present diverse voices based on balanced information and mutual respect.”

He continued, “We hope that Le Parisien and all media outlets will uphold higher ethical standards and greater balance in their coverage of religion. The Shincheonji Church of Jesus will continue to do its utmost to promote accurate understanding through transparent communication and open dialogue.”

UNITED STATES—Inside the first episode of “Targeted,” where Jonathan Taylor’s quiet life collides with the full force of corporate reprisal.

In the inaugural episode of Targeted, the new investigative podcast from Next Chapter Podcasts, we are invited not into the arena of courtroom drama or corporate exposé, but into something more quietly devastating: the intimate wreckage of a life once ordinary. Jonathan Taylor, a British lawyer who worked for the Monaco office of Dutch oil-services firm SBM Offshore, recalls the exact moment the ordinary slipped away.

“The last normal day I had was January 31st 2012. I had an entirely normal and enjoyable life. It was a good life. I was very fortunate.”

The tone is flat, the voice calm—perhaps too calm for what’s to follow. Because what Targeted presents is not just a story of corporate corruption; it is a portrait of the emotional, psychological, and professional implosion that can accompany the act of doing what is right.

An Accidental Spy

Taylor’s role at SBM was in legal compliance. He was not, by any stretch, a radical. But he was methodical, and he was taken aback when a bribery scheme was discovered within his company.

I got a call saying there was suspicion that SBM had been paying bribes to an agent… soon, it was very clear that the business model, fabric and DNA of what the company did to do business and win contracts was through the payment of bribes.”

A cost controller handed him a thick stack of payments to agents—quarter-billion dollar thick. It’s a paper trail, too specific to be denied. Taylor connects the dots in a matter of days: dates, countries, deals, all neatly aligning with a series of shadow agreements.

This was a print out of the bribes the company had made.”

His tone remains steady, but the gravity of his words reverberates through the episode like the slow toll of a bell. The narrator doesn’t need to embellish; Taylor’s cadence, soft and clinical, does more to unnerve than dramatization ever could.

The Green Shoots of a Cover-Up

It all moves quickly. One day Taylor is doing his job; the next, he’s suddenly on a committee “bizarrely” tasked with investigating the very corruption that management—he now suspects—already knew about. The absurdity doesn’t escape him.

It became very clear very quickly that the green shoots of cover up were already there to be seen within days.”

At this point, Targeted shifts from narrative to noir. There’s a door shut softly behind him by the company’s general counsel, a whispered warning, nervous meetings with colleagues joking about which jail might be the most comfortable.

Taylor was let go—only after receiving compensation and signing a stringent NDA. “That was hush money”, he recalls.

The Wikipedia Gambit

Taylor finds another job in Perth, but soon realizes the NDA he signed blocks him from future job opportunities as a lawyer. Frustrated, and after seeking compensation in vain, Taylor resorts to something both subversive and symbolic: Wikipedia.

I went on the SBM page and copied and pasted an 8-page document… a summary of SBM bribery activities that I knew about.”

It’s an act of desperation, bordering on performance art. The entry vanishes in seconds—Wikipedia’s silent moderators already on the case. But a trace remains. “Little known to me,” Taylor says, “there is a history tab.” Eventually, a journalist cites the page. The floodgates open. The matter becomes public.

There is something quintessentially modern in this act: the whistleblower shouting into the digital void, hoping to be heard—and ultimately, being heard in ways both unexpected and irreversible. It’s a moment both tragic and wryly comedic. A man dismissed as a nuisance becomes a footnote that won’t disappear. The rest of the story will be told in the second episode of the podcast.

The Anatomy of a Podcast

The structure of Targeted is intentionally sparse. There are no sensational sound cues, no dramatic reenactments. Instead, the production allows Taylor’s voice—and his silence—to carry the weight. The restraint works. We’re not being led through a labyrinth of intrigue; we’re bearing witness to a collapse.

But beneath the sparse aesthetics lies a methodological rigor. The episode is not just about Taylor; it’s about the system that allowed his targeting. The legal instruments. The emails laced with polite menace. The weaponization of ambiguity.

There was a rumor that I’d been speaking in a bar in Singapore about things I shouldn’t be.

This sentence, he received in an email from an SBM employee, almost laughable in its banality, signals something far more sinister. Taylor, once a well-placed legal advisor, is now cast as a liability. He is watched. He is nudged. And ultimately, he is disappeared from the world he once navigated with ease.

The Series Ahead: The Expanding Web of Targeting

Jonathan Taylor’s story is not unique in its trajectory, only in its details. As Targeted progresses, the podcast will broaden its scope, tracing the contours of a new, borderless system of intimidation — one that uses legal threats, reputational sabotage, and digital warfare to silence dissent. Each guest will reveal a different facet of this coordinated suppression.

We’ll hear from Pavel Ivlev, a Russian lawyer who refused to participate in the Kremlin’s fabricated case against oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky and was subsequently forced into exile, declared a fugitive for crimes he did not commit. Gaurav Srivastava, a commodity investor, found himself at the center of an elaborate disinformation campaign after his association with a sanctioned figure, caught in a reputational storm that leveraged fake news outlets and social media bots to destroy his credibility. And Nathan Law, a young pro-democracy activist and former Hong Kong legislator, tells of life under surveillance and threat, having been labeled one of China’s most-wanted simply for advocating freedom.

In this way, the podcast becomes more than a series of profiles. It is a map of the modern state of retribution — one that stretches from corporate boardrooms to authoritarian capitals, from courtrooms to the anonymous void of the internet.

As Targeted unfolds, its quiet urgency builds. It challenges listeners to consider: if anyone can be targeted, then what shield do any of us really have? In a world where speaking out is riskier than ever, the question is no longer why someone like Jonathan Taylor would blow the whistle — but why more people don’t.
