GLENDALE, CA—At the corner of San Fernando Road and Allen Avenue in Glendale, a small building built in 1951 has come back to life. It now houses Little Bear, a modern Italian fast casual spot with a big heart and even bigger flavor.

Chef Sevan Abdessian, who once transformed Glendale’s dining scene with Recess Eatery, is back. And this time, he’s bringing hand-crafted pastas, fresh sandwiches, and bright seasonal salads in a space that feels welcoming and sunlit, just like his food.

“I’ve always loved pasta,” said Chef Abdessian. “This space gave me the chance to focus on Italian cuisine and fresh pastas. Sometimes it’s the smallest things that inspire you. In this case it was the building, built in 1951 with some very cool elements.”

Little Bear opened on July 21 and has been filling plates and hearts ever since.

Chef Sevan’s menu is grounded in simplicity. The dishes start with whole, locally sourced ingredients and feature comforting, recognizable flavors with subtle global inspiration.

The food is fresh, colorful, and casual. House made pastas and sandwiches start at just eight dollars, with mains and salads that rarely climb above fifteen. “We are a modern fast casual restaurant focusing on whole ingredients,” he said.

There’s no need for white tablecloths or reservations. It’s a walk-in, cashless space with limited indoor seating and a sunny patio. And for those on the go, pickup and delivery are just a click away. “We have limited seating inside and on the patio but have a robust pickup and delivery service,” said Chef Sevan.

Little Bear is more than a restaurant. It’s a homecoming. Chef Sevan was raised in Glendale. He made his name with Recess Eatery on Brand Boulevard, a now-closed restaurant that once helped redefine dining in the city.

As the Los Angeles Times noted during Recess’s heyday, “Chef Sevan Abdessian brought a seasonal sensibility to a space where diners lingered in garden patios and took comfort in inventive versions of old favorites.” LAist once praised the spot’s eclectic menu and rustic feel, calling it “a needed breath of fresh air in Glendale.”

“Recess was my first restaurant,” he said. “It really changed the dining landscape in Glendale. Fresh organic ingredients in a light-filled intimate dining area and beautiful garden.”

That spirit carries into Little Bear. The food is casual but thoughtful. The vibe is relaxed but intentional.

Behind the restaurant’s operations is Tamar Kevonian, Sevan’s partner in business and in life. “I sort of fell into the restaurant business through my relationship with Sevan,” she said. “I learned fast. At Recess, I expanded operations and events. Here at Little Bear, I still give feedback on the menu.”

They both knew Glendale would be their home again. “We live here. We like the city and all it offers. And we wanted to be part of that again in a significant way.”

Photo courtesy of Little Bear Glendale.

Even six years after Recess closed to make way for hotel development, Glendale locals still ask about it. “Since 2016, people have approached us with nostalgic memories about Recess,” Tamar said. “There is a long memory in Glendale. Little Bear is our way of coming back.”

Little Bear is cashless and fast casual. It’s open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. While there’s no brunch service or themed dinners just yet, the team occasionally hosts private evening events and pop-ups. If you’re lucky, you might get invited to one.

Whether you’re grabbing a sandwich before work, picking up pasta for dinner, or spending an afternoon on the patio with coffee and a salad, Little Bear makes it feel easy. It’s neighborhood food made with chef-level care.

As Chef Sevan puts it: “Little Bear is a continuation of everything I’ve learned over the years—classic training, creative freedom, and a deep connection to the communities we serve. It’s a place where comfort food meets inspiration. Where every dish tells a story.”

And that story starts on San Fernando Road, with fresh pasta, soft light, and the smell of roasted garlic in the air.

If you want fresh pasta that doesn’t feel fussy, and a space that feels like home, go to Little Bear. Your taste buds will thank you.

Little Bear is located at 6800 San Fernando Rd., Glendale, CA 91201. To learn more, visit the website or call (818) 425-1284.

WEST HOLLYWOOD—The city of West Hollywood is continuing its WeHo Sounds event with a virtual presentation of its WeHo Sounds Free Concert Series on select Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at www.weho.org/wehosounds during the first two months of 2022.

The Concert Series starts on January 25 at 7 p.m. with The Bandit and The Queen. Cody Belew and Hannah Blaylock are both top-tier Nashville vocalists and their combined resumes include four major national tours opening for Grammy-award winning country artists Little Big Town, Blake Shelton, Reba McEntire, and Rascal Flatts.

They have performed on the Grand Ole Opry more than 25 times, have Top 20 country radio hits, have been Grammy-nominated for their songwriting, and have made it to the Top 7 on “The Voice.” Their influences range from classic country to mountain soul to Texas two-step.

Gregory Allison will perform on February 8, at 7 p.m. Allison creates, with a single violin, a sound that travels across great landscapes. He brings the sensibility of a film composer into a live and intimate setting. His training in South Indian Classical music brings a melodic fluency and emotional fire to his compositions, while his Western Classical training is apparent in the wide sonic palette he creates. His violin goes from intimate weeping to orchestral soundscapes, carrying the listener on a journey all the way.

The Concert Series finale on Friday, February 22, at 7 p.m. will feature Charged Particles. Celebrating their 29th anniversary this year, Charged Particles is a trio that plays funky Latin jazz, as well as creative arrangements of jazz standards. They’ve played hundreds of concerts, festivals, and clubs across the country and abroad and released three CDs that have received airplay on more than 100 radio stations, as well as NPR’s All Things Considered. Reviewers have said: “An electrifying, push-the-limits performance style…a tight and enormously talented trio.” (JazzTimes Magazine); and “Charged Particles is definitely dazzling.” (Jazz & Blues Report).

WEST HOLLYWOOD—The city of West Hollywood is continuing its WeHo Sounds Free Virtual Concert Series. The dates and artists include: November 20 (Murphy’s Flaw), December 4 (Astyn Turr), December 18 (Farofa), January 1 (Bronsen Vidas), January 15 (Steve Thachuk and Sarah Wass), January 29 (KATALYST), February 12 (Chris Hutton), and February 26 (Satin Ragdoll and The Misfit Toys.) The concert will take place on Fridays at 6 p.m.

A band that has already performed is Murphy’s Flaw. According to LA County Arts, “Murphy’s Flaw’s musical explorations include bluegrass and a panoply of American roots music such as folk, country, rockabilly, jazz, pop, and Western swing. Their repertoire features classic bluegrass tunes pioneered by bands of the 40s and 50s (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, etc.), country western swing numbers (with steel guitar by artists such as Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Bob Wills), 50s rockabilly tunes by artists such as Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers, bluegrass-arranged versions of 60s favorites from artists such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Dylan, as well as contemporary groups such as Old Crow Medicine Show and Darius Rucker.”

Another artist who has performed is Astyn Turr. “Astyn Turr is a singer-songwriter based in LA. New to the music scene, she is developing her sound to include her indie, R&B/Soul, jazz, gospel, and pop influences,” according to Spotify. Some of her most streamed songs on Spotify include: “Feel You Here,” “Tired,” “Moonlit Morning,” “Call It Home” and “6 Am.”

“Celebrated as a pivotal new sound on the Brazilian and World Music scenes, Farofa, [a band who has already performed,] delivers a passion-filled, electrifying performance of traditional rhythms blended with modern stylings and influences. Their signature sound is amplified by an eclectic collection of ideas and inspirations drawn from rock, jazz, contemporary classical, pop, deep African rhythmic tradition and, above all, from the entire musical universe of their native Brazil,” according to their website.

Indie pop artist Bronsen Vidas, who has performed, is a “Vocalist and multi instrumentalist living in Los Angeles. [He channels] all [his] influences and [tries] to piece together something that feels like [his] own. That something is always changing, but [his] ultimate goal is to perform this stuff live and inspire/connect with people,” according to Submit Hub.

According to Event Brite, “Steve Thachuk is a classical guitarist who has performed all over North America and Europe. In recent years he’s returned to his roots as an electric guitarist, collaborating with his brother to transcribe and arrange shows for rock bands touring with orchestras. He is also a professor of guitar at Cal State Northridge. Sarah Wass is a flutist, educator and consultant for arts education non-profits. She is a musical omnivore who performs with orchestras, new music groups and singer-songwriters. Steve and Sarah have performed together for over a decade. They are married and have a 7-year-old daughter.”

The last band who has previously performed is KATALYST. “Katalyst is a nine piece band formed on September 27th, 2014, after a show for L.A. Renaissance. Since then, Katalyst has gone on to play in the prestigious Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, backing recording artist Dion at Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek’s Reflection Eternal concert at the Belasco Theater, and a host of events and concerts in the Los Angeles area. Katalyst is also the creator of #Inglewoodstock, a popup concert series featuring many of Los Angeles’ most talented bands, rappers, and vocalists,” according to their website. Their music is described as “Contemporary Instrumental.”

Christ Hutton, a Los Angeles based artist who will perform, “brings passion, professionalism, and care to everything he does. As a vocalist, Chris has worked with renowned L.A. contractors Tim Davis, Edie Lehmann Boddicker and others, and has performed in styles from pop to jazz to opera. In addition to singing, Chris has collaborated with Grammy-nominated producer Bruce Vanderveer and provides coaching for record label InRage Entertainment. Chris holds a B.A. in Commercial Music from Biola University where he underwent artist development in songwriting and production with Disney songwriter Adam Watts, receiving the Bishop scholarship for voice,” according to his website.

The band who will perform is the Satin Ragdoll and The Misfit Toys. It is a “pre-1920s through 1960s jazz band led by vocalist Loren Marie Story. They bring modern instrumentation to classic songs while honoring their original mood and style. Self-described as “born in the wrong decade,” Loren Marie carries a deep love for show tunes and the glamour of the 1930s and 40s. Their near and dear influences include Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald. Always dressing the part in vintage splendor, Satin Ragdoll performs at private and public events across LA county,” according to the city of West Hollywood.

SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Community Garden with co-sponsorship from the Santa Monica Office of Sustainability and the Environment will offer a free virtual program teaching kids ages 6-11 how to properly start their own garden. “Plant an Herbalicious Garden” is the name of the event and will occur on Saturday, January 9 at 1 p.m. via Zoom.

The Program Coordinator from the Santa Monica Community Garden and staff will teach kids how to start a herb garden that is most suited for windowsills or patio. If the need of gardening materials, the Community Garden will offer supplies while they last available only through curbside pickup. Parents who do not have gardening materials can have kids make them from common household materials, such as using popsicle sticks for seed markers, as noted by the city of Santa Monica website.

The Santa Monica Library will lend their services by assisting kids and parents alike to reserve a book online, such as from their Gardening and Planting for Kids section. The library is currently closed due to the pandemic, but anyone can place a book on hold online and pick them up through a contactless curbside window during their business hours.

Ann Wilson, Youth Services Librarian, told Canyon News via email that due to limited budget, they can only provide 50 supply kits, which include pots, potting soil, seeds, and plant markers. They hope this program will benefit kids by teaching them the science of plants, how things grow, and learn something new for the New Year. Wilson is tasked creating at least one monthly program for youth and families that promotes and enhance literacy, learning, and well-being for the youth.

To register for this program, must go to santamonica.gov and fill out the form.

SANTA MONICA—The people of Santa Monica can enjoy a free and festive marionette installation at the Santa Monica Pier until January 7, 2020 named the ‘Windows of Wonderment.’

Due to the pandemic, the public will be able to see the installation outside the windows of the Santa Monica merry go-round while the puppeteers will perform inside the building where the merry go-round is held.

The Bob Baker Marionette Theatre is the troupe of puppeteers behind the ‘Windows of Wonderment’, which is a retrospective of the Bob Baker theatre in a festive setting. The historical theatre has been a staple in California since 1963, but due to COVID-19 they struggle keeping their doors open, according to Bob Baker Marionette Theatre website. They collaborated with the city of Santa Monica to bring this “one-of-a-kind installation” to life.

The city of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs and Economy Recovery Task Force created a grant program designed among other things to implement artists’ work front and center in Santa Monica. The program is called Art of Recovery and was implemented as an economic recovery plan during COVID-19.

The Windows of Wonderment is free, open to the public, and for children of all ages.
