HOLLYWOOD—One of the biggest accolades one can take home is a Daytime Emmy award, and the 2025 Daytime Emmy Awards were handed out on Friday, October 17. The big winner of the night was the ABC soap opera “General Hospital” that walked away with seven trophies including the big one, Outstanding Drama Series besting “The Young and the Restless” and “Days of Our Lives.”

“The Drew Barrymore Show” walked away with three Daytime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host,” while “Live with Kelly and Mark” won for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. Outstanding Entertainment Talk Series went to “Entertainment Tonight,” while Outstanding Culinary Instructional Series was a win for “Delicious Miss Brown.”

When it comes to the acting categories, Nancy Lee Grahn won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Alexis Davis on “General Hospital.” Oh, Grahn chewed up the small screen with the material given to her in relation to the death of her daughter Sam McCall. Paul Telfer won his first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Performance by an Actor in a Daytime Series for his work as Xander Kiriakis in “Days of Our Lives.”

In the Supporting races, it was Susan Walters who won the Emmy for her role as Diane Jenkins Abbott on “The Young and the Restless,” while Jonathan Jackson added another Daytime Emmy Award to his mantle in the Supporting Actor race for his work on “General Hospital” as Lucky Spencer. It may have been short, but when has Jackson not delivered a knockout performance soap opera fans.

Lisa Yamada took home the award in the newest category Outstanding Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Series for her work as Luna Nozawa on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” It is a simplified version of what used to be the prize for the younger actor and actresses in Daytime Drama Series. Alley Mills won the prize for Outstanding Guest Performance in Daytime Drama Series for her work as Heather Webber on “General Hospital.”

The sad thing is once again this awards ceremony that was once a staple on TV wasn’t even heavily promoted, so guess what: a lot of people had no idea it happened. However, you may be surprised how many people actually watch Daytime TV, a lot more than you actually suspect. The 52 Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are in the books; the question now starts on who may reign supreme in 2026.

HOLLYWOOD—Well, awards season is NOT here just yet, but one of the biggest accolades in the TV arena took place on Sunday, September 14. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held with comedian Nata Bargatze taking over as the Master of Ceremonies. Sorry, but I don’t know much about Bargatze, but his opening did deliver some laughs as it poked fun at diversity, streaming and the invention of television.

Wow, I expected Bargatze to have a monologue after performing that skit, but the first award of the night was presented by “The Late-Night Show” host Stephen Colbert who received a standing ovation from the audience. Colbert presented the Emmy Award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series to Seth Rogen for “The Studio.”

His monologue actually started AFTER the first prize of the night was presented, but he seemed super nervous. The lovely Jennifer Coolidge presented the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series to Jean Smart for “Hacks.” Smart was expected to be the frontrunner in the race, and she indeed captured as expected.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series was a victory for Katherine LaNASA for her amazing performance in the critically acclaimed HBO Max series “The Pitt.” On the flipside, the Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Trammell Tillman for “Severance.” I feel like we could be looking at a “Severance” and “The Pitt” battle as the night continues.

We’re not even 40 minutes in and some of the biggest prizes of the night have already been handed out. Oscar nominee Angela Bassett presented the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series to Britt Lower for “Severance” in an upset over Kathy Bates for “Matlock.” Many were expecting Bates to take home the prize. The Primetime Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series went to Hannah Einbinder for “Hacks.”

The Emmy for Reality Competition Program went to “The Traitors,” it looks like that trend of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” being unstoppable has finally shifted. The Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series went to Jeff Hiller for “Somebody Somewhere.” Seth Rogen picked up his second Emmy of the night for Directing for “The Studio.”

Wow, we have five women who were all the contenders for Directing for a Limited Series or TV movie, but it didn’t matter because Philip Barantini won the award for “Adolescence.” Directing for a Drama Series was a victory for Adam Randall “Slow Horses.” With “Severance” and “The Pitt” in that race, I didn’t expect that. Why are all the winners reading off a piece of paper? It feels so tacky, was everyone clued in on their victories before the ceremony started to televise? Preparing a speech beforehand is like a given that you know you’re going to win.

“Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the Emmy for Scripted Variety Series. Dan Gilroy won the Emmy for Writing in a Drama Series for “Andor.” It almost feels like the TV Academy has a distaste for “The Pitt” and “Severance” when it comes to the awards behind the camera or maybe the competition between the two was so stiff, it led to a split in the races allowing others to sneak in and gain a victory that likely wouldn’t have unfolded.

The Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie went to Owen Cooper for “Adolescence,” who was up against some serious competition. “Adolescence” also picked up the Emmy for Writing for a Limited Series or TV Movie. The Primetime Emmy for Writing for a Comedy Series went to the team of “The Studio.”

Gosh, I miss Tina Fey on my TV screen. That woman is hilarious, as she presented the Emmy for Outstanding Live Variety Special to “SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won the Emmy for Writing for a Variety Series. “Adolescence” continued to add to its mantle for the night with Erin Lowery winning for Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie.

Cristin Milioti picked up the Emmy Awards for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her work on “The Penguin.” I’m sorry, but this has to be one of the most boring Primetime Emmy Awards I have watched in a decade. Something is missing, it’s the comedy. It’s not that the ceremony is too serious, it just feels mundane. There was a glorious uproar in the audience when Stephen Graham won the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Limited Anthology or TV Series for “Adolescence.” I will admit I thought Colin Farrell might take home this prize for his work on “The Penguin.”

The Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series went to “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Yes, the crowd is now on an amazing high. It is worth noting Colbert’s show was recently cancelled by CBS, so this win earned a thunderous applause from the audience. “Adolescence” did a virtually sweep of all the categories that it was nominated for picking up the prize for Outstanding Limited Series or TV Movie.

It was nice to see Ray Romano and Brad Garrett on the stage presenting the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series to “The Studio.” The categories I have been waiting for all night to see who would be victorious: Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Drama Series. The most competitive of all races. In the end it was Noah Wyle for “The Pitt.” First Emmy win for the actor, who was previously nominated for his work on “ER.” It was nice seeing members of “Law & Order” present the final prize of the night: Drama Series.

“The Pitt” or “Severance?” Who would come out victorious people, because both are fantastic shows, but in the end, it was “The Pitt” which was indeed the sleeper drama series of the year and well worth the win. After more than three hours, TV’s biggest night comes to an end.

HOLLYWOOD—The nominees for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Nominations were released on Tuesday, July 15. The nominees were announced by “What We Do in the Shadows'” Harvey Guillén, and “Running Point’s” Brenda Song.

Oh, there were some surprises TV lovers, but the question is who has the most momentum heading in as voting gets underway? “Severance” led all contenders with 27 nominations, while “The Studio,” “The Penguin” and “The White Lotus” picked up 23 nominations, and the big surprise was the Hulu series “Paradise” earning some nominations in the big categories that I don’t think anyone saw coming.

I think all those series need to be watching out for “The Pitt,” which is hands down the best TV series in the past 20 years and definitely the best of 2025 easily. Too many actors were nominated from “The White Lotus” and for a season that was not top tier, I’m sorry, the third season was a bit of a dud and I’m saying it.

“Squid Game” was missing from the list and plenty of those names that many were expected to land nominations did NOT earn nominations, and what the hell happened to “The Handmaid’s Tale” for its final season for Elisabeth Moss?

There also wasn’t much love for “The White Lotus” and to be honest its third season wasn’t that great. The Showtime series, “Yellowjackets” also missed the cut for big nominations in 2025. There also wasn’t much love for the Apple TV+ series “The Morning Show.”

HOLLYWOOD—On Friday, July 11, the nominees for the 2025 Daytime Emmy Nominees were announced. Leading the pack of all contenders is “The Young and the Restless” with a total of 19 nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. Followed close behind were the soap operas “General Hospital” with 16 nominations, while “Days of Our Lives” picked up 13 nominations.

Was I surprised to see that the CBS soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” didn’t earn a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series? Yes and no because when you have that recycled storyline over and over again that gets boring and stale for viewers. I am so sick and tired of seeing like three or four slots in the acting races to be filled by candidates of the same soap opera.

Like where is the variety? I’m sorry, tell me what Melissa Claire Egan did on “The Young and the Restless” in the last year that was worthy of a Lead Actress nomination? I’m stunned and I mean STUNNED that Jane Elliott did not earn a Supporting Actress nomination for her work on “General Hospital” this past year. Elliott has been freakin’ fantastic and for her to be overlooked I cannot believe it. Same goes for Amanda Sutton who really showed series range and dramatic flair in recent months on “General Hospital.”

HOLLYWOOD—It has all come to this. Awards Season capped off on Sunday, March 2, with the 97th Annual Academy Awards. Would “Anora” or “Conclave” walk away with the Best Picture Oscar? Was it Demi Moore’s year? All those questions would be answered with comedian Conan O’Brien taking the helm as the host of the festivities. Long story short, it was a very good night for “Anora” that cleaned house.

The ceremony opened with a tribute to Hollywood, but taking classic moments in cinema from “Chinatown” to “La La Land” to “Barbie,” “The Wizard of Oz,” to “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” That later transitioned into a performance by Oscar-nominee Ariana Grande singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Grande continues to prove that she has the pipes. Her co-star Cynthia Erivo later took to the stage to perform. Erivo can sing her butt off. Her voice is beautiful. Grande later joined Erivo on the stage as they performed “Defying Gravity.” As Grande parted, Erivo continued to belt out her soul to the audience.

Host Conan O’Brien decided to spoof some of the movies of the year, with a poke at “The Substance.” What jokes would Conan deliver as a stinger to the crowd? Not many if I have to be honest. It seemed like it took a moment for him to get into the groove as host. That joke about Karla Gascon Sofia was indeed wicked and an audible gasp from the audience and the viewers at home. Sorry, but Conan’s monologue was lackluster with the laughs, but the headshots joke was funny, I will give him that.

That bit with Adam Sandler was not as funny as Conan thought it would be, but I loved him taking the moment to point out the people who work behind the camera and scenes who don’t always receive the accolades that they should receive besides the actor and actresses that appear on the screen. I didn’t expect the host to burst out a song and dance number about keeping the ceremony moving along at a solid pace.

Robert Downey Jr. took to the stage to present the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actor. This is indeed a change. Normally, the previous winner would present the prize for Supporting Actress. However, after the dust settled, it was Kieran Culkin who continued his dominance awards season with a  win for his performance in “A Real Pain.” His authenticity is amazing, as an actor; he doesn’t hide how he feels. His dedicated speech to his wife was beyond sweet.

The Oscar for Animated Feature Film went to “Flow.” That truly is a great movie, while Best Animated Short Film went to “In the Shadow of the Cypress.” The Oscar for Costume Design was presented by five people, which is something I don’t think has ever happened. It was a funny moment, as Bowen Yang was the only one dressed in costume. It was indeed a treat seeing those behind the scenes getting their flowers. The Oscar went to Paul Tazewell for “Wicked.”

The Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay were presented by funny lady Amy Poehler. The Oscar for Original Screenplay went to Sean Baker for “Anora.” Adapted Screenplay was a victory for Peter Straughan for “Conclave.” Gosh, that has to be some of the best writing I have seen in years.

Scarlett Johansson and June Squibb presented the award for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Squibb was hilarious with her poke at Bill Skarsgard. The Oscar was a victory for “The Substance.” A surprise there, but considering it’s a movie where body horror unfolds that makes perfect sense. This tribute to James Bond is interesting, as I guess we’re celebrating over 60 years of Bond movies, which makes perfect sense, with performances by Lisa “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Raye belting out “Skyfall.”

Daryl Hannah presented the Oscar for Best Editing to Sean Baker “Anora.” That was a bit of a surprise for me, as I thought “Conclave” might win that prize. Baker is impressive as hell. The fact that he not only wrote this movie, but directing it and edited it, beyond genius. Fantastic feat. Baker is already two for four tonight.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph presented the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Zoe Saldana for “Emilia Perez.” Saldana was in complete tears as she accepted her award on stage; you could feel the humbleness in her speech and her tears of joy. So happy for Saldana, it was award well-deserved and earned. The Oscar for Best Production Design went to “Wicked.”

It was indeed a treat to see Mick Jagger present the Oscar for Best Original Song to “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez.” I will admit I would have LOVED to see Diane Warren win after being nominated 16 times. Its like damn, what does this woman have to do in order to win her first Oscar after so many nominations? The Oscars for Best Documentary Feature Film and Best Documentary Short Film were presented by Selena Gomez and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film went to “The Only Girl in the Orchestra.” “No Other Land” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. That was a powerful speech about foreign policy in the United States and how changes need to be made. It was indeed a moment seeing some praise given to the members of the firefighting community who helped battle the Eaton and Palisades wildfires that completely destroyed parts of Southern Los Angeles. These officials telling jokes that are absolute stingers and I mean STINGERS!

The Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects were victories for “Dune: Part Two.” “I’m Not A Robot” won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman took to the stage to pay tribute to his “Unforgiven” co-star Gene Hackman who died earlier this week, as we went into the IN MEMORIAM segment. Dang, we really lost some talent in the last year.

I truly hate this. We don’t need five people to present for technical categories. If that is the case, you need to do it with all the categories. We witnessed this again for Best Cinematography which saw the Oscar ultimately go to Lol Crowley for “The Brutalist.” That is a big one because it was the first victory for “The Brutalist” of the night.

I know at the beginning of the season “Emilia Perez” was seen as the favorite for Best International Film, but after that scandal, I’m sure that changed its trajectory. In the end it was “I’m Still Here (Brazil)” that won the Oscar over “Emilia Perez” for Best International Film. Conan you really ate with that joke about standing up to a Russian that got an audacious roar from the crowd. Mark Hamill presented the prize for Best Original Score to “The Brutalist.”

Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg received a standing ovation as they took the stage to honor Quincy Jones, by introducing a performance by Oscar-nominee Queen Latifah who performed “Ease On Down the Road” from the iconic musical “The Wiz.” Last year’s winner for Best Actor Cillian Murphy presented the Oscar for Best Actor. This is a nail-biter. Will it be Timothee or Adrien. Ultimately, it was Adrien Brody who won for “The Brutalist.” Brody is now a two-time Best Actor Oscar-winner.

Brody gave a moving speech, where it was very difficult for him to put into words what he was feeling, and the perspective that he has when it comes to acting and his career. Brody was speaking some serious truths about the ups and owns of the industry where you can be on top one minute, but at the bottom the next. It rambled a slight bit, but Brody got to the point, as the music started to play for him to wrap up as he chatted about racism, oppression, and Anti-Semitism.

It is time for a big one, Best Director. Here is a big one, it is really a two-person race and I really had no idea who might be walking away with the Oscar, would it be “Anora” or would it be “The Brutalist?” Quentin Tarantino presented the prize to Sean Baker for “Anora.” That is three Oscars for Sean for the night, if “Anora” wins Best Picture, that will be a complete sweep for Baker. I loved Baker’s speech about the importance of “GOING TO THE MOVIES!” Yes, you can stream at home, but it is not the same as watching a movie with the audience because it becomes a shared experience.

I knew the ceremony would clock in more than three hours, this one clocked in at over three hours and 45 minutes, as the final two prizes of the night were also tense: Best Actress and Best Picture. So, who would claim the Best Actress prize? Last year’s winner, Emma Stone presented the ‘Golden Guy’ to Mikey Madison for “Anora.” That was indeed a stunning moment, because I thought this was Demi Moore’s time. Madison was stunned when her name was called. Very sweet speech, and perhaps the biggest stunner of the night.

“When Harry Met Sally” duo, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal presented the final prize of the night for Best Picture to “Anora.” Sean went four for four, while the movie picked up five trophies. The only prize it didn’t win was Best Supporting Actor. I have been wanting to check out this movie for quite some time, so with all this Oscar love, I have to check it out to see if it lives up to all the buzz. Intriguing, fun, and with that the 97th Academy Awards are in the books.

HOLLYWOOD—Now this is the Awards Show that I look forward to because it’s actors delivering accolades to other actors. The 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on Sunday, February 23, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. It wasn’t on TNT or TBS as in the past, it was televised on Netflix. That is such a bummer for individuals who don’t have the streaming service.

I’m like c’mon, as long as the Oscars don’t move to streaming solely, which I don’t think it ever will, they’ve been on ABC for as long as I can recall and I hope it stays that way permanently because the production value there just works, where with streaming, anything can happen at a given time. This year was the first time that I can recall in forever that SAG decided to have a host again, with “Nobody Wants This” star Kristen Bell taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies. Bell did a fine job despite the mishaps with teleprompters throughout the ceremony and delivered some laughs along the way.

For those who continue to pay attention to the awards seasons, the winners were a potential sign to what Oscar might do next week when it comes to Supporting Female, Supporting Male, Lead Male and Lead Female, not to mention that Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture prize which is SAG’s equivalent of a Best Picture prize. With “Anora” having such dominance in recent weeks, one could only expect it might take home the big prize, but nope, that accolade went to “Conclave” which FINALLY is getting the love that I think is long overdue.

It won the BAFTA prize for Best Picture last week, and now with this Screen Actors Guild win, this Oscar battle for Best Picture is looking like a duel between “Conclave” and “Anora” and I don’t know who’s going to be victorious once the dust settles. Both Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana continued their awards season victories with SAG trophies for Male Actor and Female Actor in Supporting Roles in a Motion Picture for “A Real Pain” and “Emilia Perez.” If they lose Oscar next week, I will indeed be stunned. It can happen, Oscar always loves a surprise or two for its audience.

Anna Sawai from “Shogun” earned the Female Actor SAG Award in a Drama Series, while her co-star Hiroyuki Sanada won for Male Actor in a Drama Series. No one was shocked with Jean Smart’s win for Female Actor in a Comedy Series for “Hacks,” but people were surprised with Martin Short winning Male Actor in a Comedy Series for “Only Murders in the Building” over Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear.” People, “The Bear” is a drama NOT a comedy. “Shogun” won the SAG Award for Outstanding Cast in a Drama Series, while surprise, “Only Murders in the Building” took home the prize for Comedy Series. Some would say that is well overdue.

In the Limited Series or TV Movie race, Jessica Gunning won for Female Actor for her work in “Baby Reindeer,” while Colin Farrell was victorious for Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series for “The Penguin.”  Acting legend Jane Fonda was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award and took the time to point out the importance of not giving up the fight for the difficult times that are ahead. Yeah, it was political, but this is Jane Fonda, so when has this woman not been afraid to get political and speak her mind. She makes it clear that empathy is important right now and that “woke just mean you give a damn about other people.”

The shocking moments were the final trophies of the night with the big stunner being Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture with Timothee Chalamet “A Complete Unknown” winning over Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist.” Chalamet was stunned with his win, and it totally makes this battle for the Best Actor Oscar that is certain to unfold in less than a week that much more interesting. Brody is the perennial favorite, but Chalamet’s performance is one that has been talked about for quite some time. He is the epitome of a ‘dark horse’ in this race.

I had been on edge about Female Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture as it was apparent that Mikey Madison was gaining some serious steam with wins from BAFTA and the Spirit Awards recently. Demi Moore had previously won the Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award over Madison, so SAG had a lot of impact on this race as we head into the Oscars.

It was Moore who came out on top for her performance in “The Substance.” I think Moore’s victory is a hint of her decades long career finally getting accolades that she has been long overlooked for. However, that doesn’t mean Madison doesn’t have a chance.

As pointed out earlier, “Conclave” won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which let’s be honest, that cast is firing on ALL CYLINDERS when it comes to acting, not a weak one in the bunch led by the great Ralph Fiennes, with Isabella Rossellini, Stanely Tucci and John Lithgow amongst others in supporting roles. With Oscar voting already over, I don’t know what impact the SAG victory has at this point, but it points to plenty of voters likely choosing that movie over “Anora,” but we shall see when the envelopes for Oscar are open on Sunday, March 2. Awards Season is indeed coming to an end America.

HOLLYWOOD—I normally wouldn’t say this, but I was bored by the 56th Annual NAACP Image Awards that were handed out on Saturday, February 22. There was something about the ceremony that just seemed to lack a levity if I’m being honest. I am used to laughing a little bit, and I think the only laughs that were delivered were courtesy of Marlon and Damon Wayans when the Wayans family took to the stage to accept an honor given to them.

Was it the fact that perennial host, Anthony Anderson, who had served as host for several years, was replaced by comedian Deon Cole? Perhaps, but I expect Cole to crack at least a few jokes, and I didn’t see him crack a single one that I could recall that left me with a chuckle in the two hour and 30-minute ceremony.

Keke Palmer took the big prize of Entertainer of the Year, which left me scratching my head a bit because I don’t recall what she did so big in 2024 that left me so entertained. I’m sorry, I’m just being honest. Another shocker was seeing Kerry Washington win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Motion Picture for “The Six Triple Eight” over Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked.” Erivo really hasn’t received much love at all this awards season, and it is indeed an absolute bummer, but I know Cynthia’s time will indeed come. “The Six Triple Eight” also won Image Award for Best Motion Picture.

Martin Lawrence won for Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” over Colman Domingo who was sensational in “Sing Sing.” I was happy to see some love for “Nickel Boys” which earned RaMell Ross a Best Director trophy.

For the funny, it was Quinta Brunson and Damon Wayans walking away with awards for Lead Actress and Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for “Abbott Elementary” and “Poppa’s House.” On the drama side, it was Michael Rainey Jr. who won Lead Actor for “Power Book II: Ghost,” while Queen Latifah won Lead Actress for “The Equalizer.”

I did love that the ceremony put a spotlight on the Altadena community and the impact the wildfires had on those residents. Yes, there has been plenty of support going around, but a lot more for Pacific Palisades than some of the other communities also impacted very hard by those devastating fires in January 2025. Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a rousing speech as she was given the Chairman’s Award. I got chills hearing her speak. Oh, it’s so obvious that Harris’ political career is far from over.

I could see another presidential run in the near future, maybe not 2028, but I have a gut feeling she might throw her hat in the ring for the Governor’s race of California that is soon approaching as she made it clear “This Chapter will not be written simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office or wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by you, by we the people.”

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards was the first I can recall in recent years that clocked in beyond the two-hour mark. So, it seems there is a trend of awards shows stretching their time more and more with each year, we’ll see what happens in 2026.

SANTA MONICA—Talk about a weekend of awards because this past weekend was busy with the Film Independent Spirit Awards, NAACP Image Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards all being held before the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2. First up was the 40th Film Independent Spirit Awards that were held Saturday afternoon, February 22 in Santa Monica.

“Anora” was the big victor of the night taking home three prizes including, Best Feature besting out movies like “Sing Sing,” “Nickel Boys,” “The Substance” and “I Saw the TV Glow.” The dark comedy also earned a Best Director victory for Sean Baker, who is looking stronger and stronger as the favorite for the Best Director Oscar in a week.

The film’s star, Mikey Madison added another piece of hardware this awards season winning the Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance. Yes, I forget that the Spirit Awards recently did away with separate categories for Actor and Actress. It’s just one big pot, which truly makes it competitive as hell when you look at all the contenders for Supporting and Lead. I wonder if the other award shows would ever consider such a thing. I don’t think so.

Best Screenplay went to Jesse Eisenberg for “A Real Pain.” Important to note that Baker was not nominated for the script he penned for “Anora” which makes me wonder if he would have won if he had been nominated. Sean Wang won the prize for Best First Screenplay for “Didi,” and the film also won Best First Feature. For Best Supporting Performance it was Kieran Culkin who continued his dominance for “A Real Pain.” While Best Breakthrough Performance was heralded to Maisy Stella for “My Old Ass.”

“Nickel Boys” won for Best Cinematography, while “September 5” won the trophy for Best Editing. The Robert Altman Award went to “His Three Daughter” and Best Documentary was crowned to “No Other Land.” “Flow” won the Best International Film prize. Sarah Winshall won the Producers Award, while Sarah Friedland won the Someone to Watch Award for “Familiar Touch.”

If the Spirit Awards told us anything, it is looking clearer that “Anora” might be the movie to beat after “Emilia Perez” crashed and burned. However, that can all change with the Screen Actors Guild Awards which might be the stronger indicator of where Oscar lands in less than a week with its choices being announced on Sunday.

LONDON, UK—Finally, we have some surprises in Awards Season. I’m sorry I hate predictability, and the 2025 British Academy of Film and Theatre Arts have delivered some surprises that are sure to have plenty buzzing as we get closer to Oscar, which transpires on Sunday, March 2. With that said, “Emilia Perez,” hate to say it, but its chances for Best Director, Best Actress and Best Picture are dunzo. The musical came into the BAFTA ceremony alongside the religious thriller “Conclave” with a multitude of nominations, but its big victor was for Supporting Actress which went to Zoe Saldana.

Yes, the musical’s star Karla Sofia Gascon may have tanked the movie’s chances in those other categories, but Saldana’s performance is still strong enough to where she has virtually dominated this awards season. We’ll see if she can keep this up with the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards this week. Adrien Brody’s turn in “The Brutalist” might be way too powerful for Ralph Fiennes “Conclave” and Timothee Chalamet “A Complete Unknown” to topple, as he picked up the BAFTA for Leading Actor.

If there was a ceremony where I suspected that Fiennes may have a chance it was BAFTA. However, never say never, because I remember when Olivia Colman won Best Actress over Glenn Close, which no one expected at the Oscars. Stunners can indeed happen. However, there was a stunner with Mikey Madison winning the BAFTA for Leading Actress beating out perennial favorite Demi Moore for “The Substance.” Madison’s win could be a sign that Moore’s chance at Oscar is not as clearcut as we expect.

Another interesting race was Director, as Brady Corbet won for “The Brutalist” over Sean Baker who just earned accolades from the PGA, WGA and DGA for “Anora.” I know many thought the race was a given for Jacques Audiard for “Emilia Perez” once awards season started, but after that film’s star had old tweets surface it killed Audiard’s chances I think and Baker swooped in with victories last week making him the frontrunner, but it’s looking like Corbet could be a serious contender for Oscar with his BAFTA win.

Supporting Actor was another cakewalk for Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.” If Culkin DOESN’T win the SAG and Oscar I will indeed be flabbergasted; it’s almost like Saldana not winning for Supporting Actress at this point. The other big surprise, but not for me is “Conclave” taking home the prize for Best Film. It is hands down my favorite movie of the year, but it hasn’t seen much love, so its victory here proves “Anora” may not be given that Oscar for Best Picture after victories last week at the Producer’s Guild of America and Director’s Guild of America.

“Conclave” next to “Wicked” is the most entertaining of all the films nominated for Best Picture. Yes, “Wicked” should get more love, but the musical really has to wallop you to walk away with awards success. “Wicked” is fun, but it’s not “Chicago.” “Conclave” also won BAFTAs for Outstanding British Film, Editing and Adapted Screenplay. Another interesting development was Jesse Eisenberg winning Original Screenplay for “A Real Pain” over Sean Baker for “Anora.” On Saturday, Baker was honored by the Writer’s Guild of America with the prize for Best Screenplay.

“The Brutalist” also picked up awards for Cinematography and Score. While “Wicked” walked away with the BAFTA for Costume Design and Production Design, while “The Substance” won for Make Up & Hair. “Dune: Part Two” picked up ywo BAFTA Awards, one for Sound and the other for Special Visual Effects.

There was plenty and I mean plenty to talk about thanks to BAFTA which has shaken the Awards Race. There is only one more awards show before Oscar Sunday, and that is the Screen Actors Guild Awards that might definitely tell us where voters are leading when it comes to the acting races. We might also have an indicator if “Conclave” is a bigger threat to “Anora’s” Best Picture chances or if it’s vice versa.

HOLLYWOOD—If you were to ask me two weeks ago, who might be the biggest contender for Awards Season, I had my money on “Emilia Perez.” The buzz around the movie had been continuing to grow for the movie, not to mention it just dominated the Oscar nominations with a total of 13, including Best Picture.

Well, it doesn’t take long for an Oscar campaign to torpedo, as that scandal involving “Emilia Perez” star Karla Sofia Gascon and her previous tweets resurfaced and the movie’s dreams of making history feels nearly impossible. I have never seen a movie with such potential promise, just crash and burn so quickly. Gascon who made history as the first transgender person to be nominated for an Oscar, has been phased out of the film’s marketing campaign for awards season, and her chance of winning Best Actress have all but vanished into thin air. I still don’t think she ever had a chance, this is Demi Moore’s year, I’m sorry, it just is.

However, her colleagues, Zoe Saldana who is up for Best Supporting Actress could have those dreams of Oscar dashed, if members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences choose NOT to see the movie because of the controversy. Also in series danger is the film’s director Jacques Audiard who was considered the front-runner, but that all changed after the Producers Guild of America and Director’s Guild of America awarded, “Anora” with the Best Picture trophy. That same night, “Anora’s” director Sean Baker was heralded the victor by the Director’s Guild of America for his work on the movie.

Yeah, in one night, “Anora” which has gone without many accolades all awards season is looking like a frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar and Best Director. Now I will admit, I can see Baker wining for Best Director, but I don’t know about Best Picture yet. I will hold out on making a decisive victor until after the Screen Actors Guild Awards crowns its winners on February 22.

The movie did pick up a Best Picture victory at the Critic’s Choice Awards on Friday night, but I hold no stake in the Critic’s Choice Awards. Critics love to think they have their pulse on what the actual awards shows that matter will do, and they don’t. That awards show just started gaining some traction in like the last seven or eight years. Before that it wasn’t even televised and if it was not many people were watching.

So “Anora” definitely has the momentum as we near the BAFTA and SAG awards that will absolutely give us a sign of “Anora’s” strengths and weaknesses. However, remember, Oscar always loves to deliver a shock or two, so you can predict all you want, but it doesn’t mean you’ll be right because at the end of the day it is indeed a popularity contest, which I have learned with age.

HOLLYWOOD—On Friday, February 7, the 30th Annual Critic’s Choice Awards were held with Chelsea Handler serving as host. I will admit Handler is not afraid to go there with stinging barbs as she tackled that legal drama involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, as well as many of the new policies from President Donald Trump. This is an awards show after all, so there were plenty of trophies given out during the process.

No single movie dominated, but “Anora” did come out on top winning the Best Picture prize. Which I didn’t expect, then I had to think about it. Did the Critic’s change their potential winners considering the ceremony had been pushed back almost a month because of the Los Angeles wildfires? I don’t think so, but I couldn’t help but have that assumption because it felt like “Anora” just skyrocketed to the top of the charts overnight and not many people were talking about the movie.

The momentum is absolutely growing in “Anora’s” favor, but things can always change at the flip of a switch. Other big winners at the ceremony included “Emilia Perez” which walked away with three trophies: Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song. Actress Demi Moore had a good night walking away with the prize for Best Actress for her work in the horror film, “The Substance.” The movie also earned a trophy for Best Original Screenplay for the movie’s director Corali Fargeat.

That battle for Best Actor is discussed by many to be a two-person race between Adrien Brody and Timothee Chalamet for their work in the films “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown.” It was ultimately Brody who walked away with the prize, while the Best Supporting Actor race delivered another victory for Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.”

Peter Straughan picked up the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Conclave,” which I think is a movie that should be generating far more buzz than what it actually is. However, the biggest surprise for me in the ceremony was the victory by Jon M. Chu for Best Director for “Wicked.” I will admit I thoroughly enjoyed the musical and I hate musicals, but I was expecting this to be a race between Sean Baker “Anora” and Brady Corbet “The Brutalist.”

Oscar members are always a finnicky one when it comes to this race and we’ve seen Best Director and Best Picture split many times at the Oscars, look at “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crash” or perhaps, “Saving Private Ryan” and “Shakespeare in Love.”

Yes, it has happened more times than you can imagine, and it’s quite possible something similar could happen for 2025. The BAFTA ceremony will be held on February 16, while the following Sunday we have the SAG Awards and then the pinnacle of awards the Oscars are handed out a week later on March 2.  Yes, as soon as Awards Season starts it looks like it is slowly coming to an end.

BEVERLY HILLS—After a bit of a delay, the contenders for the biggest accolade in the entertainment industry were announced on Thursday, January 23 from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

The contenders were announced by “Bodies, Bodies and Bodies” actress Rachel Sennott and “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang. The So who would be the big juggernaut of the season? Would it be “Anora,” “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” or “Emilia Perez?” When the dust settled it was “Emilia Perez” that dominated with 13 nominations. “Wicked” earned 10 nominations, as well as “The Brutalist,” while “A Complete Unknown” picked up 8 nods.

Were there snubs? You betcha. No Denzel Washington, no Selena Gomez, no Jamie Lee Curtis and no Danielle Deadwyler.  Many were already on the fence, but with the Screen Actors Guild nominating Deadwyler and Curtis, I expected they MIGHT make the cut.

The Best Director race is an interesting one with the inclusion of James Mangold and Coralie Fargeat for “A Complete Unknown” and “The Substance.” Coralie is the only female competing in that group of men, and that movie is generating some serious buzz. Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman didn’t make the cut for Best Actress for their performances for “Maria” or “Babygirl” which tells you just how competitive things were this season.

HOLLYWOOD—The nominees for the 2025 British Academy of Film and Theatre Arts (BAFTA) were released during the wee hours of Wednesday morning January 15. Yes, this awards season has been a bit unorthodox as a result of wildfires that are plaguing the Southern Los Angeles region in the past week. Were there surprises? You bet and it makes an already interesting awards season that much more intriguing as some of the likely candidates are still contenders, while a few new faces have been introduced to the race.

Topping all candidates is the flick “Conclave” which earned 12 nominations including Best Film. Not far behind is the musical “Emilia Perez” that picked up 11 nominations also including Best Film. The other big contender for the BAFTA Awards is the three hour and 35-minute drama, “The Brutalist” which earned nine nominations.

Now, it’s time to talk about the surprises because there were plenty. Leading Actress saw the inclusion of Marianne Jean-Baptiste for her performance in “Hard Truths,” as well as Saoirse Ronan for “The Outrun.” Who missed the cut? No Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl” or Pamela Anderson for “The Last Showgirl.” The surprise was seeing Jamie Lee Curtis earn a nomination for Supporting Actress for “The Last Showgirl.” Curtis also earned a nomination last week with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, so it’s looking more and more likely that she might be a dark horse in that race.

Other surprises include the exclusion of Daniel Craig in the Lead Actor race for his role in “Queer,” while Denzel Washington missed the cut for his performance in “Gladiator II.” The other surprise was the nomination for Clarence Maclin for “Sing Sing.” There has been plenty of talk for Maclin for weeks now, but he has gone virtually absent most of awards season until now, so that Supporting Actor race continues to be an interesting one where I think any of the nominees can walk away with the prize.

HOLLYWOOD—The Golden Globes are past us, and it’s time to start looking at where things can truly go for Awards Season. On Wednesday, January 8, the nominees for the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced. Actress Joey King and actor Cooper Koch from “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menedez Story” announced the nominees. The live nominations were scraped as a result of the Palisades Fire and other fires threatening homes and structures in Los Angeles.

The nominees were announced via a press release from the SAG Awards website Wednesday morning. Leading all contenders on the cinematic side is the musical “Wicked” which picked up five nominations including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. On the TV side, “Shogun” earned five nominations as well including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

“A Complete Unknown” earned four nominations, while “Emilia Perez” and “Anora” picked up three nominations apiece. Now, with SAG things always get interesting as there were some surprises in several of the acting races. Lead Actor hasn’t shifted at all with the usual suspects making the cut, but Lead Actress is another story because two actresses who I expected to make the cut did not with Angelina Jolie “Maria” and Nicole Kidman “Babygirl” being left off the list.

So, whose inclusion surprised the most, Pamela Anderson earning a nomination for her work in “The Last Showgirl.” It raises a serious question as to whether Anderson could hear her name announced for a Best Actress Oscar in a few weeks. I think the other four nominees are locked, but that fifth slot is an interesting one, as it’s starting to look like Demi Moore is the one to beat this year for Lead Actress for her work in “The Substance.”

Perhaps the ace with the biggest shakeup has to be Supporting Actress. Why? Jamie Lee Curtis, Monica Barbaro and Danielle Deadwyler all picked up nominations with the SAG. So Margaret Qualley “The Substance” missed the cut, as did Felicity Jones for “The Brutalist.” Curtis is completely out of left field, while Barbaro was a standout in “A Complete Unknown” and Deadwyler has been teased for a while as one of the best things about “The Piano Lesson,” so for those thinking Zoe Saldana had this one in the bag, they might want to think again. Denzel Washington was missing from “Gladiator II,” and Selena Gomez was MIA for “Emilia Perez,” as well Isabella Rossellini for “Conclave.”

Another surprise is the omission of Guy Pearce from the Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture race for Jonathan Bailey for “Wicked.” Yeah, Bailey was fun in “Wicked” but his performance in no way wowed me as a moviegoer.

BEVERLY HILLS—This feels like a different Awards Season because there isn’t that clear cut movie or two that is the front-runner in my opinion. However, the 82nd Golden Globes ceremony was about to give fans in the entertainment industry a hint at what is to come in terms of battles. The ceremony which isn’t a sign of what the Screen Actors Guild or Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Scientists will do, it’s still the party in Hollywood and comedian Nikki Glaser was the host.

I have heard of Glasser, but I’m not super familiar with her comedy so I was eager to see what approach she would take with the ceremony because let’s face it, I think Ricky Gervais was the best host the GG had in years, followed by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the past few hosts, whew, they have been terrible.

I’m still adjusting to the ceremony being televised on CBS compared to NBC which seems it has been the staple for the awards ceremony for decades. Glaser kicked off the show with a few jabs tackling Ozempic, I did love that quip about the election and celebrities encouraging those who they should vote for. Damn, that jab against Ben Affleck was wicked, as well as that jab at Robert Kennedy.

Glaser hit it on the money, movie stars are doing more TV and that jab at the streaming service Peacock was hilarious. She was not afraid to go there, and I loved that confidence that she had with her jokes at Martin Short, Tilda Swinton, Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Nicole Kidman, “Wicked” and so many more; this woman didn’t take any prisoners, but she did it in a way with being shady, but not brutal.

Glaser did a good job with her opening before the first award of the night for Female Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture to Zoe Saldana for “Emilia Perez,” who was in virtual tears when her name was called. Her speech went a bit long, but it was so authentic and warm that I didn’t care. Big win for Saldana. The prize for Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy to Jean Smart for “Hacks.” No surprise there.

What the hell was that bit with Arianna DeBose and Key He Quan, after that flop, the prize for Male Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture was handed out to Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.” Not sure what the technical quips the show is going for with the side comments and the digital fingerprints of showing where people are at the actual event, were so unnecessary. That moment between Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore from “The Substance” was funny. Male Actor in a Drama Series was a victory for Hiroyuki Sanada for “Shogun.”

The production at this year’s ceremony is totally off. Something about it is just taking me out of the swing of the ceremony. That moment with presenters Anthony Ramos and Kathy Bates was heart-warming as they handed out the Globe for Female Actor in a TV Series to Jessica Gunning for “Baby Reindeer.” The Ramos and Bates duo also presented the award for Supporting Actor in a TV series to Tadanobu Asano for “Shogun.”

Yeah, these awards are being handed out fairly quickly, with the Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy series going to Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear.” When it comes to writing, Best Screenplay went to Peter Straughan for “Conclave.” I will admit that movie was fantastic and gripping as hell, and I loved every moment of it. Seriously, why are we presenting a Golden Globe for a standup comedic performance? Makes no sense, but congrats to Ali Wong. The Golden Globe for Best Non-English film went to “Emilia Perez” (France).

Colin Farrell walked away with the Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie for his performance in “The Penguin.” Jodie Foster picked up her fifth Golden Globe for Female Actor in a Limited Series, anthology or TV Movie for “True Detective: Night Country.” One of the big awards of the night, Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Demi Moore for “The Substance.” That I was not expecting, but Demi is starting to garner a lot of buzz for her performance in this extreme body horror flick. So with Moore’s win, I think we could have a very interesting Oscar race, and she is a major contender.

Hard to believe Demi has been in the industry over 45 years and has never won a major accolade until right now. Her speech was inspiring, courageous and I loved it! Bravo standing ovation, best speech of the night. On the flip side, the GG for Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Sebastian Stan for “A Different Man”. There has been talk about Stan’s performance in this movie, so this is another flick I totally have to check out.

When it came to Animated Movie the Golden Globe was awarded to “Flow.” Bit of a surprise there, as I was expecting “Inside Out 2” to claim the victory. We’re about two hours into the Golden Globes ceremony and while not boring, it has not been as riveting either. When it comes to directing, the Golden Globe was given to Brady Corbet “The Brutalist.”

That bit with Elton John and Brandi Carlile was funny as he addressed the talk about his vision. With that subtle laugh, “Challengers” walked away with the GG for Best Original Score. Whoever wrote some of these jokes for the presenters at this ceremony, gosh, they are just terrible. Best Original Song went to “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez.”

In a new category that no one requested, the Golden Globe for Box-Office Cinematic Achievement went to “Wicked.” Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie was a Golden Globe victory for “Baby Reindeer.” I needed some laughs and Melissa McCarthy and Awkwafina were great scene partners as they presented the award for Best Comedy Series to “Hacks.” To be honest it should have gone to, “Nobody Wants This.” Best Female Actor in a Drama was a victory for Anna Sawai “Shogun.” Collecting the Golden Globe for TV Series Drama was “Shogun.”

I do feel like the ceremony is about to go beyond three hours. We still have a few awards to hand out, not to mention Viola Davis hasn’t been presented with the Cecille B. DeMille award. Perhaps, the DeMille prize is NOT being presented at the ceremony. Guess what, we discovered that after that commercial break. Bummer, as that has been a trend in previous ceremonies where such an accolade was highlighted.

Davis took to the stage to present the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture Drama to Fernanda Torres “I’m Still Here.” I think Torres might be an upset win here in this category because many were expecting Angelina Jolie to walk away with the prize for “Maria.” Will admit a lot more will come to light on Wednesday when the Screen Actors Guild contenders are announced. That’s indicative as the nominees will be chosen by the actors who make up a very large branch of AMPAS who will determine the Oscar nominees in the acting races.

The acting race for Male Actor is a competitive one, where I think it will come down to a duel between Adrien Brody “The Brutalist” and Ralph Fiennes “Conclave.” I’m leaning towards Fiennes, but Brody was the one who came out on top with his GG win. “The Brutalist’ is a very long movie clocking in over three hours and 35 minutes. So that will be a tough watch to squeeze in. A ceremony that started strong slogged to the end with the final two prizes for Best Musical or Comedy to “Emilia Perez,” while Motion Picture Drama went to “The Brutalist.”

So with all the dust settling, “The Brutalist,” “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” are looking like the major contenders as awards season continues to push forward if we’re basing things off the Golden Globes. However, the GG don’t have much sway when it comes to the SAG Awards and the Oscars, so look out for who is nominated come Wednesday when the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees can change everything as we know.

HOLLYWOOD—Awards Season is upon us cinema lovers. On Monday, December 9, the nominees for the 2025 Golden Globes Awards were announced. Leading the pack of all contenders is the musical “Emilia Perez” which picked up 10 nominations including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director and nominations for its stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Kala Sofia Gascon.

“The Brutalist” picked up seven nominations, while “Conclave” earned six nominations, with “Anora” and “The Substance” picking up five nods each. When it comes to TV, “The Bear” earned five nominations, with “Shogun” and “Only Murders in the Building” picking up four nominations apiece.

There were some surprises, Pamela Anderson earning a Best Actress nomination, not much love for “Wicked” in the Best Director race. Seems “Gladiator II” is only seeing love for its scene stealer Denzel Washington.” Also earlier buzzier films of the year, “Civil War” missed the cut, but “Challengers” got plenty of love to my surprise. NEW YORK—It was Broadway’s biggest night, the annual Tony Awards, which celebrated the brightest and the best on stage. “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Stereophonic” led the pack of contenders coming into the ceremony with 13 nominations apiece. However, before the night was over it was “Stereophonic” that earned big accolades winning Best Play, while the Angelina Jolie produced, “The Outsiders” won the Tony for Best Musical. “Stereophonic” walked away with a total of five Tony Awards.

Yes, America, there was serious star power in the audience for the 2024 Tony Awards compared to years past. There was Oscar-winners, Jessica Lange, Jennifer Hudson and Angelina Jolie, you had Cynthia Enrivo, Jeremy Strong, Holland Talyor, Rachel McAdams, Taraji P. Henson, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, there were some big names and that usually is not the case.

Oscar-winner Arianna DeBose hosted the ceremony for her third consecutive year kicking things off with a song-and-dance number per usual. It was a fun opening number and it is what you come to expect. I thought the ceremony started off strong with lots of energy with Henson handing out the first trophy of the night for Lead Actor in a Play to Jeremy Strong for “Enemy of the People.”

Alica Keys took to the stage to perform the hit “Empire State of Mind” alongside rapper Jay-Z who made a surprise appearance. It was indeed a fun moment for the ceremony. Will Brill took home the Tony for Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for “Stereophonic.” A triumphant applause was given for Kara Young who walked away with her first Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Play for “Purlie Victorious…” Young had previously been nominated twice before, and celebrated the victory with her father who was by her side.

Daniel Aukin continued the dominance for “Stereophonic” walking away with the prize for Direction in a Play, while Danya Taymor won Direction in a Musical for “The Outsiders.” “Harry Potter” alum, Daniel Radcliffe picked up a Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Musical for “Merrily We Roll Along.” The musical also won the Tony for Best Revival for a Play which was presented by Jennifer Hudson.

“Appropriate” was victorious in the race for Best Revival of a Play, and its star Sarah Paulson walked away with the Tony for Lead Actress in a Play giving a wonderful speech as she took the stage. It was indeed a moment when Former First Lady and Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton took the stage to present “Suffs.”

Kecia Lewis won the Tony for Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for “Hell’s Kitchen.” When it came to Leading Actor and Actress in a Musical it was Jonathan Groff who picked up his first Tony for “Merrily We Roll Along,” while Maleah Joi Moon won for “Hell’s Kitchen.”

“Suffs” picked up two Tony Awards, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Overall, the ceremony had plenty of energy kicking off the ceremony, but I think the last hour of the ceremony lost a bit of its steam, but I was more entertained than usual. Until 2025 Broadway lovers.

HOLLYWOOD—On Saturday, March 16, it was all about Black excellence as the 2024 NAACP Image Awards were held. Coming into the ceremony it was the musical/remake of the 1985 classic, “The Color Purple” that led all nominees with a total of 16 nominations but took home a total of 11 awards. Be aware a bevy of the awards were handed out over several days leading up to the ceremony. Actress and musician Queen Latifah hosted the ceremony for the second consecutive year.

The ceremony didn’t actually start on time at 8 p.m. as scheduled, it was almost 30 minutes late kicking things off, with Latifah having a special call with Vice President Kamala Harris who urged people to get out and vote for the 2024 Presidential Election. There was also discussion about pay equity in Hollywood especially for actresses of color, as previously pointed out by actress Taraji P. Henson during “The Color Purple” press tour that was a bit of a debacle, if you’re asking me. The host encouraged other actresses of color to stand up and make sure their voices are heard as that is the only way to encourage change.

Henson earned the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “The Color Purple.” I did expect Danielle Brooks, if not Oscar-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph to walk away with that prize. Henson’s co-star, Colman Domingo was a double winner during the ceremony picking up trophies for Outstanding Supporting Actor for “The Color Purple” and Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for “Rustin.” Domingo was not in attendance at the awards show.

Singer Fantasia Barrino won the Image Award for Lead Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “The Color Purple.” Barrino was emotional as she took to the stage to thank her co-stars and the actors and actresses from the 1985 film that gave them a chance to introduce the iconic story to a new audience.

On the TV side of things, Damson Idris won the Image Award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “Snowfall,” while “Queen Charlotte” star India Ria Amarteifio won for Actress in a Drama Series. Quinta Brunson took home the prize for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, while Mike Epps won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for “The Upshaws.”

The iconic boy band New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The accolade was presented by former boy bander Donnie Walhberg from New Kids on the Block. Usher picked up two prizes for the night winning the President’s Award and was honored with the highest honor: Entertainer of the Year by Oprah Winfrey. Overall, an entertaining ceremony that made sure the pace was solid and moved faster than most award shows that clock in at three hours plus if not longer. Congrats to all the winners.
