HOLLYWOOD—I’m not sure what is unfolding in Hollywood to the point where it is impacting retail, but I don’t like it one single bit. I knew at some point the notion of CDs would be non-existent, which you truly cannot find them in many retail establishments. Yeah, Taylor Swift’s latest album was released on CD, but it was mainly streaming for music and vinyl where the bulk of her sales came from.

Yes, it is hard to say this in 2025 that CDs are a thing of the past. I’ll be honest the last CD I purchased had to be in 2009. I simply stopped purchasing them because I got tired of wasting my money on music that wasn’t top tier. I don’t want to buy a CD that only has 2 songs worth listening to.

With that said, vinyl has witnessed an amazing explosion in the past 5 years or so. I mean before 2020 there were NOT many people at all who owned record players and utilized them to play music. Maybe the older generation like my parents, but not millennials or Gen Z. Oh, that has changed, but the problem is vinyl records are NOT AFFORDABLE. Go visit Target, Best Buy or any record store and you will see how expensive vinyl albums truly are. There is no way I’m paying $40-$60 for an album; I’m sorry that is absolutely crazy and bonkers, and I don’t care who the hell you are talking to.

A CD was like $10; the music industry wants you to pay like 5x that amount for a single album nowadays if not way more, which means you are in a situation where your money truly has to be stretched to get what it is that you truly want. This is the same sentiment for home entertainment like DVDs, Blu-Ray Discs and 4K Discs. Go to Target, you’re not going to find any of these things anymore. If you want to purchase a movie for home viewing that you can permanently own and insert into a device, good luck.

Streaming has changed that; you’re expected to purchase such items online for delivery to your home. They are no longer in stores, and I find that crazy to say the least. The same applies to Best Buy; they no longer sell any of these items in store, I think within the last month or two they have placed some DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and 4K discs of classic movies on their website via third parties for purchase.

Like I don’t understand some retail establishments. It feels like they want Amazon to be the kind of all things you buy. Yes, you can get stuff quicker and it can be delivered directly to your home. You know what else you can do: go to the actual establishment and buy it yourself. This is why we continue to see so many brick-and-mortar establishments go out of business and close their doors. The things you want to buy you cannot find them in stores at all.

I like buying movies; I like having them as collectibles. I’m a movie collector, but it has literally been a year since the last movie I purchased on Blu-Ray. Why? No retailers advertise them anymore, and you’ll be lucky to find one in stores and the prices are just, “Ridiculous, I’m sorry.” I shouldn’t have to go to like 6 to 7 retailers to try to find something that used to be the norm.

However, you don’t have many electronic retail establishments anymore. I mean I have Best Buy, Target, Walmart (to a degree), FYE (to the stores that are still around) and that’s it. If you know any others, please let me know because I’m listening. Costco and Sam’s Club don’t fall into that group because they don’t really sell those things. You can only purchase so many things on streaming services/devices because you’re going to RUN OUT OF SPACE. I will be damned if I am going to delete or get rid of things I spent my hard money on when it comes to entertainment.

Hello Hollywood and music industry, there is still money to be made from purchasing movies and music beyond on the streaming platforms. If there are any retailers who want to consider a new business establishment that sells such things, hate to say it, but you could have a money maker on your hands.

HOLLYWOOD—The contenders for the biggest accolade in the music industry were announced on Friday, November 7. I’m referring to the Grammy Awards. Rapper Kendrick Lamar leads the pack with 9 Grammy nominations including nominations for Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. For those not in the know, Lamar earned Grammys this year for Record and Song of the Year for “Not Like Us.”

For the upcoming 2026 ceremony, Lamar is nominated in the Record and Song of the Year categories for “luther,” while he competes in the Album of the Year race for “GNX.” Lamar has been nominated for the highest honor several times but has never won. Not far behind Lamar with nominations are Lady Gaga with seven nominations including Album of the Year for “Mayhem,” while her hit song “Abracadabra” earned nominations for Record and Song of the Year.

Bad Bunny earned 6 nominations including noms for Album, Song and Record of the Year as well. Also ranking in 6 nods was Sabrina Carpenter, who will also compete in the top categories of Album, Song and Record of the Year alongside Lamar, Lady Gaga and Bad Bunny.

Were there snubs. Of course, if they weren’t it wouldn’t be the Grammys. Not seeing much love was Miley Cyrus who was largely overlooked for her most recent album. Grammy winner Lorde didn’t see any love despite her dropping her fourth album, “Virgin” this year. Also overlooked were Gracie Abrams, The Weeknd and Megan Moroney.

NEW YORK CITY, NY—On Tuesday, October 14, Rhythm and Blues great, Michael Eugene Archer, better known as, D’Angelo died of pancreatic cancer. He was 51. His family posted a heartfelt message on X.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life … After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14, 2025. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.

We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

Regardless, music was in his soul. His brother, Luther, publicly told many that he came home from school one day to find D’Angelo playing a song on the piano. He wasn’t just “banging” he first told Rolling Stones, he could play, and he was only three years old.

D’Angelo wrote his own music that some musicians referred to as being part of the “Neo-Soul” movement. He was about 21 years old, when he co-wrote and co-produced his own single, “U Will Know” by his supergroup, Black Men United, in 1995.

Some of his other hits included: “Lady,” “Cruisin,” “Nothing Even Matters,” and “How Does It Feel.” His albums include Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah.

Reports indicate that 300,000 copies of Brown Sugar were sold in the first two months following its release in 1995. It spent 65 weeks on Billboard 200 and went platinum in 1996.

Voodoo was released in 2000. Music critics revered this album as, “A Masterpiece,” and calling it D’ Angelo’s “Greatest Work.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. 320,000 copies were sold in the first week.

D’Angelo and the Recording engineer, Russell Elvevado, earned a Grammy at the 43rd Grammy Awards for the best R and B album. The Executive Producer and Manager at the time was Dominique Trenier.

The album Black Messiah was released in December 2014. This was D’Angelo’s final album. 117,000 copies were sold in the U.S during the second week of sales. Several thousand more copies were sold in the UK.

Billboard named D’Angelo one of the greatest R and B artists. Rolling Stones magazine ranked him 75 on a list of 200 greatest singers of all time.

It was D’Angelo’s struggles with drugs and alcohol that prevented him from producing more. In recent months, the R and B great let it be known that his hope would be not to be remembered by the struggle, but by the gift of music that he gave to the world.

LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles is not a city short on spectacle, but rarely does it arrive in the form of an Italian organist and a Californian soprano inside a cavernous Gothic Revival church. On Sunday, the Beverly Hills International Music Festival presented La Voce dell’Organo at the First Congregational Church of LA, home to the second-largest organ in the world — a leviathan of pipes that loomed over the evening like an unspoken promise.

The opening works, by contemporary Italian composer Daniele Maffeis, did little to reveal that promise. His Capriccio e Cannone, a suite of four movements, was melodically attractive but structurally uncertain, as though the ideas hadn’t quite decided whether to stride forward into modernism or retreat politely into tradition. Spiritelli dell’Organo, which followed, was more firmly grounded in classical harmony, though one suspects its charm might be greater in a smaller hall than under the full weight of this vast instrument. Donato Giupponi, the organist, handled both works with elegance and authority — but his brilliance was, at first, somewhat hemmed in by the material.

Enter Veronica Bell, soprano from Los Angeles, whose arrival quite literally changed the air in the room. Her three opening Donizetti songs filled the vault of the cathedral with a resonant warmth, her phrasing supple, her musicality luminous. In a single moment, the concert gained the sense of occasion that had, until then, been conspicuously absent.

A modern interlude from Carlotta Ferrari did not disturb the new momentum. Instead, it served as a charming palate-cleanser before Bell returned with Verdi’s formidable aria Tu Che le Vanita from Don Carlos. Here was the transformation: Giupponi, at last, let the full organ roar, and Bell matched him with a voice both dramatic and unexpectedly full in both high and low registers. The cathedral, which had been politely observing the proceedings, now seemed fully awake.

From this point, the programme blossomed into something rather magnificent. Giupponi’s own arrangement of Rossini’s overture to L’Italiana in Algeri was dazzling in its virtuosity, while Bell’s return for two Rossini songs and Puccini’s Nessun Dorma left no doubt that these two lesser-known artists were more than equal to the grandeur of their setting.

It is tempting, in a city so enamored with celebrity, to measure a concert’s worth by the fame of its performers. But on this occasion, the names mattered far less than the artistry. What began with hesitant curiosity ended with the sense of having witnessed something rare and deeply satisfying. One only wishes the audience had been larger, for Giupponi and Bell deserved far more ears to carry their sound out into the hot Los Angeles night.

HOLLYWOOD—Wow does BET know how to put on an awards show. I remember in the early 00s how must-see TV the BET Awards used to be. That fizzled over recent years, but with the awards ceremony celebrating its 25th anniversary they went all out, and it had to be one of the most entertaining ceremonies in years.

Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey all received their flowers with the Icon Award being presented to them. I’ll talk more about two of those recipients later because it was worth it. I want to chat about host Kevin Hart because man was hilarious. This is coming from someone who doesn’t find Hart all that funny, but he delivered the laughs on Monday, June 8 with an opening monologue that got a few stingers in at Diddy, Mr. Franklin himself and a few others.

His skits during the ceremony, while brief were hilarious, like that moment where he went into the booth to drop a few bars. OMG, I think I almost fell off the sofa because I was laughing so hard. He definitely delivered during a ceremony that clocked in over four hours. Yeah, the run time was a bit long, and I did get a bit fatigued as the ceremony entered the third hour of performances.

Usually I care about the awards, but I didn’t for 2025, they were handed out, but this was really a celebration of the culture and the performances and seeing old faces that many viewers of BET haven’t seen in years was worth it. I mean we saw the ceremony pay tribute to its iconic series 106 and Park, which highlighted the top music videos and songs daily.

Yeah, it truly was something people including myself nearly 20 plus years ago was glued to the TV to see who ranked where. I mean it was BET’s version of MTV’s Total Request Live. Free wasn’t the only host to return as we witnessed iconic performances, we saw the return of Tigger and Julissa, as well as Bow Wow, and Terrance J. I mean the boy band B2K which had young teenage girls and women in their early 20s fawning over them reunited on the stage to perform their iconic hit “Bump, Bump, Bump.” Never thought I would see that in a million years.

The audience and viewers were treated to performances by Keyshia Cole, Mya, Ashanti, Amerie, Jim Jones and T.I. Yeah, it was music that absolutely fed my soul. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the early 00s had some of the best music, it’s not better than the 80s and 90s for me, but the early 00s defined my generation so it holds an important place in my heart.

There were some winners at the ceremony including Kendrick Lamarr who walked away with plenty of trophies including Album of the Year, Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, Video of the Year and Best Collaboration. He was also at the ceremony to accept awards that were presented during the telecast. There was also a highlighted moment from rapper Doechii who took to the stage to accept for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and called out President Donald Trump and the current violence taking place in Los Angeles as a result of the immigration raids in the city.

Chris Brown and SZA were winners of the R&B categories for male and female. Tyler Perry also chatted a bit about the power of women, in particular Black women in his life who have been a major influence and called out the political climate currently in the country as well.

However, the biggest highlights for me were the icon tributes. Mariah Carey apparently has new music out, which I had no idea was coming. Did I think she was slightly stiff on the stage? Yeah, but this is Mariah Carey, so she can do no wrong. Busta Rhymes presented Carey with her accolade, but it would have been a treat to actually have the songstress bless the viewers and audience with a medley of her iconic hits.

I did think a few artists could have performed, but then I realized it was MC, so not many can hit those octaves that Mariah can do people, perhaps Ariana Grande might be the only one on that list who can hit such a range. Still happy to see Mariah receive her flowers considering she’s never been graced with a BET Award before Monday’s ceremony.

However, while happy for Kirk Franklin and Snoop Dogg, I loved Jamie Foxx’s speech. Foxx was in tears as a ton of musicians like Babyface, T-Pain and a few others took to the stage to pay tribute to the triple threat. Foxx was in tears in the audience as he watched the performance, however, it was the moment he took the stage that really struck a chord as a viewer. He got emotional talking about his recent health crisis a few years ago, and how he almost wasn’t here.

He paid tribute to his sister, and his daughters who being by his side during a traumatic and trying time. It was heartfelt and just honest and pierced through the heart. Major kudos from Foxx for being honest, authentic and sharing his truth with the world in a moment that people will indeed be talking about for years to come. The year 2025 proved to be a great moment for BET, I’m hoping that energy spills over to 2026.

INDIO—WOW! Where to start? Coachella and Stagecoach 2025 were so over the top, so incredibly satisfying, visually and to the ear that this was perhaps the greatest year ever for these two cultural institutions.
Lady Gaga kicked off Friday night of weekend one to the stifling three-digit heat. And with her “Mayhem” set, she was hotter than the weather enveloping the Indio Polo Grounds.
The colors, perfect dancing and choreography was stunning to say the least. Guest stars for her set included Queen Latifah, Victoria Monet, and Ciara.
On Saturday of weekend two Ed Sheeran could not fit everyone into the Mojave Tent who wanted to see him performed a great, stripped-down set that felt like just him and an acoustic guitar. Great last second add Goldenvoice.
Green Day as a headliner did everything a headliner should do. They rocked; they rolled and called out a young man from the audience who stole the show with his stellar guitar playing of the classic “Good Riddance.” And then on Sunday Megan Thee Stallion called out her surprise act and it was a winner-Billie Eilish.
For the next weekend of Coachella, it was more of the same except the weather. It was considerably cooler than week one, which was greatly appreciated by the festival concertgoers. The weather would stay nice and cool for the next weekend when then mostly honky tonk sounds of Stagecoach rolled into town.
Jon Pardi, Jellyroll and Luke Combs would headline, but there were certainly more memorable moments packed into this one weekend.
Backstreet Boys are back! They closed out the Sunday night and Stagecoach concert with the same excellence you would have expected decades ago. Other stellar performances included Dasha, the new country star with superstar written all over her.
Paris Hilton and Kate Hudson added an air of mystique and class to the event. So, the fire and ice of weekend one compared to the next two weekends were complete. All that needs to be said is bring on 2026!

HOLLYWOOD—It has all come to this. Awards Season capped off on Sunday, March 2, with the 97th Annual Academy Awards. Would “Anora” or “Conclave” walk away with the Best Picture Oscar? Was it Demi Moore’s year? All those questions would be answered with comedian Conan O’Brien taking the helm as the host of the festivities. Long story short, it was a very good night for “Anora” that cleaned house.

The ceremony opened with a tribute to Hollywood, but taking classic moments in cinema from “Chinatown” to “La La Land” to “Barbie,” “The Wizard of Oz,” to “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” That later transitioned into a performance by Oscar-nominee Ariana Grande singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Grande continues to prove that she has the pipes. Her co-star Cynthia Erivo later took to the stage to perform. Erivo can sing her butt off. Her voice is beautiful. Grande later joined Erivo on the stage as they performed “Defying Gravity.” As Grande parted, Erivo continued to belt out her soul to the audience.

Host Conan O’Brien decided to spoof some of the movies of the year, with a poke at “The Substance.” What jokes would Conan deliver as a stinger to the crowd? Not many if I have to be honest. It seemed like it took a moment for him to get into the groove as host. That joke about Karla Gascon Sofia was indeed wicked and an audible gasp from the audience and the viewers at home. Sorry, but Conan’s monologue was lackluster with the laughs, but the headshots joke was funny, I will give him that.

That bit with Adam Sandler was not as funny as Conan thought it would be, but I loved him taking the moment to point out the people who work behind the camera and scenes who don’t always receive the accolades that they should receive besides the actor and actresses that appear on the screen. I didn’t expect the host to burst out a song and dance number about keeping the ceremony moving along at a solid pace.

Robert Downey Jr. took to the stage to present the first award of the night for Best Supporting Actor. This is indeed a change. Normally, the previous winner would present the prize for Supporting Actress. However, after the dust settled, it was Kieran Culkin who continued his dominance awards season with a  win for his performance in “A Real Pain.” His authenticity is amazing, as an actor; he doesn’t hide how he feels. His dedicated speech to his wife was beyond sweet.

The Oscar for Animated Feature Film went to “Flow.” That truly is a great movie, while Best Animated Short Film went to “In the Shadow of the Cypress.” The Oscar for Costume Design was presented by five people, which is something I don’t think has ever happened. It was a funny moment, as Bowen Yang was the only one dressed in costume. It was indeed a treat seeing those behind the scenes getting their flowers. The Oscar went to Paul Tazewell for “Wicked.”

The Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay were presented by funny lady Amy Poehler. The Oscar for Original Screenplay went to Sean Baker for “Anora.” Adapted Screenplay was a victory for Peter Straughan for “Conclave.” Gosh, that has to be some of the best writing I have seen in years.

Scarlett Johansson and June Squibb presented the award for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Squibb was hilarious with her poke at Bill Skarsgard. The Oscar was a victory for “The Substance.” A surprise there, but considering it’s a movie where body horror unfolds that makes perfect sense. This tribute to James Bond is interesting, as I guess we’re celebrating over 60 years of Bond movies, which makes perfect sense, with performances by Lisa “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat “Diamonds Are Forever,” and Raye belting out “Skyfall.”

Daryl Hannah presented the Oscar for Best Editing to Sean Baker “Anora.” That was a bit of a surprise for me, as I thought “Conclave” might win that prize. Baker is impressive as hell. The fact that he not only wrote this movie, but directing it and edited it, beyond genius. Fantastic feat. Baker is already two for four tonight.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph presented the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress to Zoe Saldana for “Emilia Perez.” Saldana was in complete tears as she accepted her award on stage; you could feel the humbleness in her speech and her tears of joy. So happy for Saldana, it was award well-deserved and earned. The Oscar for Best Production Design went to “Wicked.”

It was indeed a treat to see Mick Jagger present the Oscar for Best Original Song to “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez.” I will admit I would have LOVED to see Diane Warren win after being nominated 16 times. Its like damn, what does this woman have to do in order to win her first Oscar after so many nominations? The Oscars for Best Documentary Feature Film and Best Documentary Short Film were presented by Selena Gomez and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film went to “The Only Girl in the Orchestra.” “No Other Land” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. That was a powerful speech about foreign policy in the United States and how changes need to be made. It was indeed a moment seeing some praise given to the members of the firefighting community who helped battle the Eaton and Palisades wildfires that completely destroyed parts of Southern Los Angeles. These officials telling jokes that are absolute stingers and I mean STINGERS!

The Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects were victories for “Dune: Part Two.” “I’m Not A Robot” won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman took to the stage to pay tribute to his “Unforgiven” co-star Gene Hackman who died earlier this week, as we went into the IN MEMORIAM segment. Dang, we really lost some talent in the last year.

I truly hate this. We don’t need five people to present for technical categories. If that is the case, you need to do it with all the categories. We witnessed this again for Best Cinematography which saw the Oscar ultimately go to Lol Crowley for “The Brutalist.” That is a big one because it was the first victory for “The Brutalist” of the night.

I know at the beginning of the season “Emilia Perez” was seen as the favorite for Best International Film, but after that scandal, I’m sure that changed its trajectory. In the end it was “I’m Still Here (Brazil)” that won the Oscar over “Emilia Perez” for Best International Film. Conan you really ate with that joke about standing up to a Russian that got an audacious roar from the crowd. Mark Hamill presented the prize for Best Original Score to “The Brutalist.”

Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg received a standing ovation as they took the stage to honor Quincy Jones, by introducing a performance by Oscar-nominee Queen Latifah who performed “Ease On Down the Road” from the iconic musical “The Wiz.” Last year’s winner for Best Actor Cillian Murphy presented the Oscar for Best Actor. This is a nail-biter. Will it be Timothee or Adrien. Ultimately, it was Adrien Brody who won for “The Brutalist.” Brody is now a two-time Best Actor Oscar-winner.

Brody gave a moving speech, where it was very difficult for him to put into words what he was feeling, and the perspective that he has when it comes to acting and his career. Brody was speaking some serious truths about the ups and owns of the industry where you can be on top one minute, but at the bottom the next. It rambled a slight bit, but Brody got to the point, as the music started to play for him to wrap up as he chatted about racism, oppression, and Anti-Semitism.

It is time for a big one, Best Director. Here is a big one, it is really a two-person race and I really had no idea who might be walking away with the Oscar, would it be “Anora” or would it be “The Brutalist?” Quentin Tarantino presented the prize to Sean Baker for “Anora.” That is three Oscars for Sean for the night, if “Anora” wins Best Picture, that will be a complete sweep for Baker. I loved Baker’s speech about the importance of “GOING TO THE MOVIES!” Yes, you can stream at home, but it is not the same as watching a movie with the audience because it becomes a shared experience.

I knew the ceremony would clock in more than three hours, this one clocked in at over three hours and 45 minutes, as the final two prizes of the night were also tense: Best Actress and Best Picture. So, who would claim the Best Actress prize? Last year’s winner, Emma Stone presented the ‘Golden Guy’ to Mikey Madison for “Anora.” That was indeed a stunning moment, because I thought this was Demi Moore’s time. Madison was stunned when her name was called. Very sweet speech, and perhaps the biggest stunner of the night.

“When Harry Met Sally” duo, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal presented the final prize of the night for Best Picture to “Anora.” Sean went four for four, while the movie picked up five trophies. The only prize it didn’t win was Best Supporting Actor. I have been wanting to check out this movie for quite some time, so with all this Oscar love, I have to check it out to see if it lives up to all the buzz. Intriguing, fun, and with that the 97th Academy Awards are in the books.

HOLLYWOOD—Why oh, why? Nearly 20 years ago I used to be a fan of the Grammys, but not anymore. They have lost their ump in my opinion and it’s starting to become the longest awards show during Awards Seasons.

The Grammys, you’re lucky if you see eight, maybe 10 awards presented. Beyonce led all contenders with 11 nominations, but the question EVERYONE wanted to know is if she would show up to the ceremony and if so, would she FINALLY be bestowed with that Album of the Year trophy that has alluded her since her career started in 2003 as a solo artist with a win for “Cowboy Carter?”

Well let’s say Beyonce had a great night. She FINALLY won Album of the Year for “Cowboy Carter” after a nearly four-hour ceremony, yeah, not even the Oscars is that long. Would I say the Album is Beyonce’s best work. No, it is not. That feat goes to “Beyonce” or “Renaissance,” this is just the Grammys way of making up for her losing last year and being called about by the singer’s hubby Jay-Z.

Beyonce got to take the stage twice during the ceremony accepting the Grammy for Best Country Album and Album of the Year, and her speeches were short and sweet; she was visibly stunned with her win for Country Album that was presented by Taylor Swift, of all people.

However, the big surprises were Record of the Year and Song of the Year, where I truly had no idea who could come out on top. It was Kendrick Lamar, yes, the critically acclaimed rapper who has never won any of the Big Four, finally getting some love for “Not Like Us,” that diss track against rapper Drake that has left so many people in the rap industry and America fawning over the lyrics. I was screaming at the TV seeing Kendrick take those two trophies that were well-deserved.

It was a night of performances, and I mean performances people. The ceremony was hosted by Trevor Noah, newsflash, the Grammys doesn’t need a host, it just makes the ceremony longer than what it needs to be. I like Noah, but at times he just talked way too much for my liking.  I did love the tribute and love to the state of California as a result of the devastating impacts of the wildfires last month that has destroyed Altadena, Pacific Palisades, portions of Malibu and other areas.

With that said, the first performance of the night was a collaborative effort that include John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley and The Doors. Billie Eilish performed her hit, “Birds of a Feather,” while Sabrina Carpenter gave a fun performance including a medley of her hits from her album “Short N’ Sweet” which won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. It took the ceremony 30 mins to present the first trophy of the night for Best Rap Album to Doechii for “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Loved her speech and learning that only three women have won that prize in the 36 years since the category was created stunned me.

Chappell Roan, the artist not afraid to speak her truth, gave an eclectic performance and was bestowed with the Best New Artist prize where she gave a speech pointing the finger at music labels for not always taking care of their artists. I loved that performance by Doechii it was hands down one of the best of the night for me because she tore that stage up. Teddy Swims proved that he sings from the soul which stings to your core when you hear his voice. Shaboozey got some love as he performed his inescapable hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”

If you didn’t know who the Best New Artist nominee Raye was, after that performance on the stage I looked her up. Girl has a voice America. Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga hit the stage to pay tribute to the victims of the wildfires of Los Angeles and performed their hit “Die With a Smile” which won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Was shocked to see The Weeknd back at the Grammys after boycotting the ceremony. That tease for Lady Gaga’s new music video and single, man was that catchy. Gaga you might be the big name at the 2026 Grammys, just saying.

Jennifer Lopez presented the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album to Shakira for “Las Muejeres Ya No Lloran.” There was a massive tribute to music icon Quincy Jones that included Will Smith, Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Lainey Wilson, Stevie Wonder and Janelle Monae paying tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson with her take on “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough.” She definitely looked the part.

I have to admit after about two hours into the show, the last two hours were a bit of a drag it was a tough slog to get through and I don’t know if it was a lack of awards being handed out or the ceremony just being too long. It was a treat seeing Miley Cyrus present Record of the Year to Kendrick Lamar after winning the prize last year. And the moment that had everyone stunned was the appearance of Diana Ross who presented Lamar with the Song of the Year Grammy. Lamar was stunned with the win and Ross’s presence on the stage.

Alicia Keys was bestowed with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and she spoke about DEI efforts being under attack in the United States. The last performance of the night was Charli XCX who performed hits from her album “Brat.” I will admit it was nice to see the Grammys spread out the awards in 2025. Usually you have one artist DOMINATE the ceremony sweeping Record, Song and Album of the Year, and sometimes Best New Artist, so things being sprinkled out evenly with amongst music’s best was great.

With that said, the 2026 Grammys better be shorter than what we got in 2025. Four hours for an awards show is a doozy, hell, that is longer than the Oscar-nominated flick “The Brutalist” which gives you an intermission.

BEVERLY HILLS—This feels like a different Awards Season because there isn’t that clear cut movie or two that is the front-runner in my opinion. However, the 82nd Golden Globes ceremony was about to give fans in the entertainment industry a hint at what is to come in terms of battles. The ceremony which isn’t a sign of what the Screen Actors Guild or Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Scientists will do, it’s still the party in Hollywood and comedian Nikki Glaser was the host.

I have heard of Glasser, but I’m not super familiar with her comedy so I was eager to see what approach she would take with the ceremony because let’s face it, I think Ricky Gervais was the best host the GG had in years, followed by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the past few hosts, whew, they have been terrible.

I’m still adjusting to the ceremony being televised on CBS compared to NBC which seems it has been the staple for the awards ceremony for decades. Glaser kicked off the show with a few jabs tackling Ozempic, I did love that quip about the election and celebrities encouraging those who they should vote for. Damn, that jab against Ben Affleck was wicked, as well as that jab at Robert Kennedy.

Glaser hit it on the money, movie stars are doing more TV and that jab at the streaming service Peacock was hilarious. She was not afraid to go there, and I loved that confidence that she had with her jokes at Martin Short, Tilda Swinton, Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Nicole Kidman, “Wicked” and so many more; this woman didn’t take any prisoners, but she did it in a way with being shady, but not brutal.

Glaser did a good job with her opening before the first award of the night for Female Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture to Zoe Saldana for “Emilia Perez,” who was in virtual tears when her name was called. Her speech went a bit long, but it was so authentic and warm that I didn’t care. Big win for Saldana. The prize for Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy to Jean Smart for “Hacks.” No surprise there.

What the hell was that bit with Arianna DeBose and Key He Quan, after that flop, the prize for Male Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture was handed out to Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain.” Not sure what the technical quips the show is going for with the side comments and the digital fingerprints of showing where people are at the actual event, were so unnecessary. That moment between Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore from “The Substance” was funny. Male Actor in a Drama Series was a victory for Hiroyuki Sanada for “Shogun.”

The production at this year’s ceremony is totally off. Something about it is just taking me out of the swing of the ceremony. That moment with presenters Anthony Ramos and Kathy Bates was heart-warming as they handed out the Globe for Female Actor in a TV Series to Jessica Gunning for “Baby Reindeer.” The Ramos and Bates duo also presented the award for Supporting Actor in a TV series to Tadanobu Asano for “Shogun.”

Yeah, these awards are being handed out fairly quickly, with the Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Musical or Comedy series going to Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear.” When it comes to writing, Best Screenplay went to Peter Straughan for “Conclave.” I will admit that movie was fantastic and gripping as hell, and I loved every moment of it. Seriously, why are we presenting a Golden Globe for a standup comedic performance? Makes no sense, but congrats to Ali Wong. The Golden Globe for Best Non-English film went to “Emilia Perez” (France).

Colin Farrell walked away with the Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie for his performance in “The Penguin.” Jodie Foster picked up her fifth Golden Globe for Female Actor in a Limited Series, anthology or TV Movie for “True Detective: Night Country.” One of the big awards of the night, Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Demi Moore for “The Substance.” That I was not expecting, but Demi is starting to garner a lot of buzz for her performance in this extreme body horror flick. So with Moore’s win, I think we could have a very interesting Oscar race, and she is a major contender.

Hard to believe Demi has been in the industry over 45 years and has never won a major accolade until right now. Her speech was inspiring, courageous and I loved it! Bravo standing ovation, best speech of the night. On the flip side, the GG for Male Actor in a Musical or Comedy went to Sebastian Stan for “A Different Man”. There has been talk about Stan’s performance in this movie, so this is another flick I totally have to check out.

When it came to Animated Movie the Golden Globe was awarded to “Flow.” Bit of a surprise there, as I was expecting “Inside Out 2” to claim the victory. We’re about two hours into the Golden Globes ceremony and while not boring, it has not been as riveting either. When it comes to directing, the Golden Globe was given to Brady Corbet “The Brutalist.”

That bit with Elton John and Brandi Carlile was funny as he addressed the talk about his vision. With that subtle laugh, “Challengers” walked away with the GG for Best Original Score. Whoever wrote some of these jokes for the presenters at this ceremony, gosh, they are just terrible. Best Original Song went to “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez.”

In a new category that no one requested, the Golden Globe for Box-Office Cinematic Achievement went to “Wicked.” Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie was a Golden Globe victory for “Baby Reindeer.” I needed some laughs and Melissa McCarthy and Awkwafina were great scene partners as they presented the award for Best Comedy Series to “Hacks.” To be honest it should have gone to, “Nobody Wants This.” Best Female Actor in a Drama was a victory for Anna Sawai “Shogun.” Collecting the Golden Globe for TV Series Drama was “Shogun.”

I do feel like the ceremony is about to go beyond three hours. We still have a few awards to hand out, not to mention Viola Davis hasn’t been presented with the Cecille B. DeMille award. Perhaps, the DeMille prize is NOT being presented at the ceremony. Guess what, we discovered that after that commercial break. Bummer, as that has been a trend in previous ceremonies where such an accolade was highlighted.

Davis took to the stage to present the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture Drama to Fernanda Torres “I’m Still Here.” I think Torres might be an upset win here in this category because many were expecting Angelina Jolie to walk away with the prize for “Maria.” Will admit a lot more will come to light on Wednesday when the Screen Actors Guild contenders are announced. That’s indicative as the nominees will be chosen by the actors who make up a very large branch of AMPAS who will determine the Oscar nominees in the acting races.

The acting race for Male Actor is a competitive one, where I think it will come down to a duel between Adrien Brody “The Brutalist” and Ralph Fiennes “Conclave.” I’m leaning towards Fiennes, but Brody was the one who came out on top with his GG win. “The Brutalist’ is a very long movie clocking in over three hours and 35 minutes. So that will be a tough watch to squeeze in. A ceremony that started strong slogged to the end with the final two prizes for Best Musical or Comedy to “Emilia Perez,” while Motion Picture Drama went to “The Brutalist.”

So with all the dust settling, “The Brutalist,” “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” are looking like the major contenders as awards season continues to push forward if we’re basing things off the Golden Globes. However, the GG don’t have much sway when it comes to the SAG Awards and the Oscars, so look out for who is nominated come Wednesday when the Screen Actors Guild Award nominees can change everything as we know.

HOLLYWOOD—It is a harsh reality, but streaming is the future. As much as I love it, I absolutely hate it at the same time. Why? Reliability. The internet is not great all the time and you have situations where it doesn’t work, or it stops working and it creates an unspeakable frustration. CDs have dissipated from retail stores I want to say almost five plus years ago, they seem ancient, but there are people who still own CDs and they have a lot of them.

CDs aren’t even made anymore, if they are tell me a place where you can purchase them. I have a big theory on why they’ve gone extinct. The quality of music just sucks. I mean in the 70s, 80s, 90s, even early 00s, you had albums you could play from start to finish, but once iTunes and all those music outlets starting to come to fruition things changed. Musicians weren’t focused on making quality albums, they wanted to craft hits. Sorry, I’m not spending $15 to $20 on a CD that has only one or two good songs, when you go back to the 80s and you have something like “Thriller” that doesn’t have a single dud on the entire album!

You do have vinyl records that have made a massive comeback and they still appear in stores at some retailers, but you have to have a record player to enjoy and a cost of $40 to $50 for a vinyl album is too much for me. I’m not spending that I’m just not.

It is not just music that is disappearing from the stores, movies are as well, yes you could purchase DVDs, Blu-Rays and 4K digital discs to enjoy at home and on your on entertainment system. Well, those days are fleeting. Best Buy earlier this year stopped selling them completing. At first they weren’t in stores, and now its wiped off their website.

You cannot purchase them at the retailer anymore. Target USED to sell them in stores, but in the past month or so, guess what, they have vanished. They replaced them with books. Who the hell is still reading books! It baffled me beyond being baffled, you still have books in stores, but DVDs, and Blu-Rays no more.

Forget it, it is so bad that now you go to Target’s website to purchase and the price is just ridiculous this is the problem when a market is cornered or businesses that used to sell certain products stop doing it or go out of business. It leaves the consumer stuck and without a place to fulfill those needs. I think Walmart might be the only place where I can actually go into a store and purchase movies now, and even that I’m uncertain about.

Sorry, I know what many of you are thinking, go to Amazon. No, it isn’t going happen. I don’t like the notion of ordering everything online and having to wait for something to be delivered to my home. I’m over it, and I’m not making Jeff Bezos and Amazon richer than what they already are. Everyone is going to say just go digital with movies. Ok, that is fine, but I like putting a movie into my Blu-Ray player or my home entertainment system to enjoy at home with the great sounds. You don’t get that with a streaming service.

Also I hate, I hate with a passion when the movie stalls and that spinning circle drives me bonkers. Nothing is worse than a movie stalling right when you get into the movie. Also you can ONLY store so much in these digital libraries before you lose storage space. What are you going to start deleting movies that you purchased? I want to have things as part of my collection.

There are items that I have which are collectors items that you cannot find anymore. Guess what, you cannot have that digitally, and it frustrates me to the core. There are those of us who still like to purchase things and we don’t want things just in the cloud. Hey retailers we have people who want to buy things.

HOLLYWOOD—It seems like it gets earlier and earlier each year. On Friday, November 8, the nominees for the 2025 Grammy Awards were announced and we have another record broken. Beyonce is now the most nominated artist in Grammy history with a total of 99 nominations.

She picked up 11 nominations this year including the Big Three, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Yes, her country album “Cowboy Carter” could be the album that finally earns Beyonce her first Grammy for Album of the Year after being nominated for the big prize five times prior and never winning.

She will face some tough competition in that race as she goes up against Taylor Swift yet again for “The Tortured Poets Department”. Swift has won Album of the Year four times, more than any other artist in Grammy history. Followed behind Beyonce is Kendrick Lamar, Charlie xcx and Billie Eilish with seven nominations each. I feel like Kendrick is a frontrunner in that Record of the Year Grammy. He picked up two nominations for Record and Song of the Year for his ubiquitous hit “Not Like Us;” that diss track against rapper Drake.

Jones worked in the music industry for more than 7 decades and earned a total of 28 Grammy Awards during his career. He is known for his impact on the genre of jazz in the music industry. He is responsible for the score for the TV series “Roots” and the critically acclaimed 1985 film “The Color Purple” directed by Steven Spielberg. In 1968 he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “The Eyes of Love” from the movie “Banning.” He was also nominated for Best Original Score for “In Cold Blood.”

Jones was a frequent collaborator with musician Michael Jackson with the albums, “Off the Wall,” “Thriller” and “Bad.” He also produced and conducted the 1985 song, “We Are the World” which won the Grammy Award for Record and Song of the Year and consisted of a slew of musician including Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, James Ingram, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Kim Carnes and Bob Dylan to name a few.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and was named by Time magazine as the most influential jazz musician of the 20th century. Other notable musicians that Jones worked with include Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Marvin Gaye.

Jones was born in Chicago in March 1933. The family moved to Washington in 1943, and he studied music at Seattle University. He served as producer on “The Color Purple” (1985) which earned 11 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, but didn’t win a single award at the ceremony. He suffered two brain aneurysms in 1974.

His frequent collaboration with Jackson helped the youngest Jackson’s first solo album “Off the Wall” to sell 20 million copies. Their collaboration on “Thriller” in 1982 led to more than 65 million albums being sold and earned a record 8 Grammy Awards in 1984 including Album of the Year.

The musician was married 3 times during his career and has seven children, Kenya, Rashida, Kidada, Martina, Quincy, Jolie and Rachel. Jones released a total of 16 studio albums during his career, not including his work on 24 soundtrack albums including “The Wiz” and “The Color Purple.” He won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for “Back on the Block” at the 1991 Grammy Awards. An exact cause of death for Jones has not yet been disclosed to the public.

UNITED STATES—Who would have imagined we would have received a rap battle in 2024 that would place the battles of the past to shame. When I think of epic rap battles the biggest that comes to mind is Tupac vs. Biggie Smalls or aka Biggie. That was 1995 and 1996, and we all know how that ended. Two of the greatest rappers of all time lost their lives. This is not to say that one caused the death of the other, but it was quite speculative that one was after the other.

The point of that backstory is that Tupac vs. Biggie was a rap battle that ended terribly. The other big beef I can recall is between Nas and Jay-Z, two rappers who are considered greats and their beef in the early 00s was well documented and followed, and we’re talking about two who are eclectic to say the least. That beef ultimately ended amicably.

However, the last beef between commercial success rapper Drake, and critically acclaimed, multiple-nominated Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar is one to admire. Look, I think Drake can craft a hit single like any other, and they are damn catchy along the way. “Hotline Bling” and “Started From the Bottom” are two of my favorite hits. They are just catchy and unforgettable songs. However, when I think of lyricists, Drake is not at the top of my list. He can rap, he has a great flow, but lyrically, a lot of the stuff he raps about does align with the rap culture of those who have grown up in the hood, ghetto or inner city. I mean we all know Drake is from Canada, not the United States and he starred on that Canadian series “Degrassi.”

On the flipside, you have Kendrick Lamar who is lyrically one of the best rappers of this current century in my opinion. “To Pimp A Butterfly” is beyond a classic album and the fact that he didn’t win Album of the Year haunts me. Look, Taylor Swift is a great songwriter, but the Grammys are just full of kiss-asses, when you have great musicians who have never won the ultimate prize, but she claims it four times, come on. That is an entire other column that we won’t even touch right now.

It all started with Drake claiming himself J. Cole and another rapper (you know it’s not someone important if I can’t remember their name) being listed as the top lyricist. That did not bode well with many in the rap industry and shots started to be fired with Lamar addressing the mayhem on the diss track “Like That.” A few weeks later Drake responded with “Push Ups” and another one, “Taylor Made Freestyle” not long after.

Would Lamar respond, that is the question we all wanted to know, and when I say he responded, I mean he responded with “Euphoria” which was gripping at Drake’s throat. However, it was Lamar’s six-minute diss, “Meet the Grahams” that had me giddy as well. Lyrically, Lamar dug Drake’s grave and tossed him right in it. Not only was it bold, but it was brutal. Drake has responded with his own diss noting he purposely leaked fake information to see if Lamar would take the bait, but that just seems stupid and makes absolutely no sense if you’re asking me. Why would you leak information about yourself to see if some would take the bait and try to use it against you? Make it make sense Drake!

Drake just can’t compete with Lamar who hails from Compton, that is a gritty region to grow up in, Drake didn’t live that street life. For those of us who have lived in those areas and are familiar with that lifestyle, if you rap about it, you better be able to showcase proof of it, otherwise it defeats the purpose and your credibility is completely tossed out the window as a result.

The beef has simmered a bit this week, but I’m just waiting for Drake or Kendrick to craft up that explosive radio single that gets so much play it will be nearly impossible to ignore. It hasn’t happened just yet, but time will tell that it is coming a lot sooner than later, and for fans of rap music and lyricists like myself, you are glued to the internet waiting for the next diss track to arrive. Who’s winning? Kendrick Lamar easily, but Drake is giving him a run for his money, but that blow from Drake just hasn’t landed yet in my opinion.

HOLLYWOOD—On Saturday, March 16, it was all about Black excellence as the 2024 NAACP Image Awards were held. Coming into the ceremony it was the musical/remake of the 1985 classic, “The Color Purple” that led all nominees with a total of 16 nominations but took home a total of 11 awards. Be aware a bevy of the awards were handed out over several days leading up to the ceremony. Actress and musician Queen Latifah hosted the ceremony for the second consecutive year.

The ceremony didn’t actually start on time at 8 p.m. as scheduled, it was almost 30 minutes late kicking things off, with Latifah having a special call with Vice President Kamala Harris who urged people to get out and vote for the 2024 Presidential Election. There was also discussion about pay equity in Hollywood especially for actresses of color, as previously pointed out by actress Taraji P. Henson during “The Color Purple” press tour that was a bit of a debacle, if you’re asking me. The host encouraged other actresses of color to stand up and make sure their voices are heard as that is the only way to encourage change.

Henson earned the prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “The Color Purple.” I did expect Danielle Brooks, if not Oscar-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph to walk away with that prize. Henson’s co-star, Colman Domingo was a double winner during the ceremony picking up trophies for Outstanding Supporting Actor for “The Color Purple” and Lead Actor in a Motion Picture for “Rustin.” Domingo was not in attendance at the awards show.

Singer Fantasia Barrino won the Image Award for Lead Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “The Color Purple.” Barrino was emotional as she took to the stage to thank her co-stars and the actors and actresses from the 1985 film that gave them a chance to introduce the iconic story to a new audience.

On the TV side of things, Damson Idris won the Image Award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for “Snowfall,” while “Queen Charlotte” star India Ria Amarteifio won for Actress in a Drama Series. Quinta Brunson took home the prize for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, while Mike Epps won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for “The Upshaws.”

The iconic boy band New Edition was inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. The accolade was presented by former boy bander Donnie Walhberg from New Kids on the Block. Usher picked up two prizes for the night winning the President’s Award and was honored with the highest honor: Entertainer of the Year by Oprah Winfrey. Overall, an entertaining ceremony that made sure the pace was solid and moved faster than most award shows that clock in at three hours plus if not longer. Congrats to all the winners.

HOLLYWOOD HILLS—Well it is officially over people. Awards Season as we know it, ended on Sunday, March 10, as the 96th annual Academy Awards better known as the Oscars were held. The biggest A-listers in Hollywood and some not so A-list stars walked the red carpet as the highest accolade in the entertainment industry was handed out.

I had to be reminded that the ceremony was airing at 7 p.m. EST nearly an hour earlier than what the ceremony has done for decades starting at 8 or 8:30 p.m. EST and stretching until 12 or 12:30 a.m. in years past. The ceremony kicked off a few minutes late, as celebs were still being interviewed and arriving to the red carpet. I like the earlier time because the ceremony wrapped in just under three and a half hours. Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel returned to host the ceremony and poked fun of some of the biggest flicks of 2023 including “Barbie.”

Would Kimmel deliver the laughs? That is the question we all wanted to know, and he kept things light, joking about the earlier time, the actors and writers strike and the snub towards director Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Wow, I cannot believe that Kimmel went there with Robert Downey Jr. and his past that has been quite controversial to say the least, but it landed. I will admit, the jokes were ok, but did not have me falling out of my seat. The joke involving Steven Spielberg was hilarious and I did laugh.

The first award of the night for Actress in a Supporting Role was presented by five previous winners, Mary Steenburgen, Lupita N’yongo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Regina King and Rita Moreno. I love the idea of iconic winners presenting the award to the next person who is joining the exclusive group. Which was done first in 2010 and nearly 14 years later it occurred yet again. This needs to be done moving forward people, it is great to see.

When the envelope was opened it was “The Holdovers” star Da’Vine Joy Randolph who took the win and she was quite emotional giving her speech about not being different, but just being herself. The Oscars for Animated Feature and Animated Short were given to “War is Over” and “The Boy and the Heron.” That win for Best Animated Film to “The Boy and the Heron” over “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” did indeed surprise me a bit.

Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars were the next awards of the night and these are indeed interesting races because the scripts this year were fantastic so picking just one is not easy. For Original Screenplay, it was Justine Triet and Arthur Harari who took the prize for “Anatomy of a Fall.” I’m so happy for that flick because it is something amazing. For Best Adapted Screenplay, it was Cord Jefferson who won the Oscar for “American Fiction.” I loved Cord’s speech about taking a risk on the smaller pictures and not always the big budget movies.

Ryan Gosling performing “I’m Just Ken” at the 96th Academy Awards.

Billie Eilish performed her hit from “Barbie,” “What Was I Made For?” It was a very mellow and subdued, but powerful performance from Billie. “Poor Things” walked away with the Academy Award for Best Make-Up and Hairstyling, as well as Production Design.

Yeah, the pacing on the 2024 Academy Awards is moving at a very steady pace, faster than I have ever seen in recent years people and we’re talking about 20 plus categories being handed out. Take note other award shows. Really they’re doing this bit with John Cena who is expected to run across the stage nude. Cena really goes for it when it comes to committing to something as he presented the Oscar for Best Costume Design to “Poor Things.” Ok, that’s three Oscars for “Poor Things” in a matter of 10 minutes or so. Cena’s bit was a highlight of the night.

Best International Feature was a win for “The Zone of Interest.” That bit between Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling was quite fun and these two should be doing more comedic roles. Nice to see a bit love for the stunt coordinators and stunt performers that don’t always receive the love they should receive in the cinematic universe.

Actors Key Hu Quan, Sam Rockwell, Tim Robbins, Christoph Waltz and Mahershala Ali, all presented the prize for actor in a Supporting Role. Very interesting that Waltz and Ali have both won the award for Supporting Actor two-times. How ironic is that? With all the great praise, it was no secret that Robert Downey Jr. won his first Oscar after three nominations for his role in “Oppenheimer.” I love that Downey never takes things too seriously; he is a hoot to watch.

It was a moment seeing “Twins” stars Danny DeVito and Arnold presenting the Oscar for Best Visual Effects and with Michael Keaton in the audience the bit was hilarious. “Godzilla Minus One” walked away with the trophy, I wouldn’t say it was a surprise because the competition was not all that great this year. At last, some love finally for “Oppenheimer” which won the prize for Best Film Editing. That is a strong sign for where things are headed for Best Picture. I was really impressed to see a woman win for editing because it is something that rarely happens in the Academy’s history.

Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature were Oscars presented by Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera to “The Last Repair Shop” and “20 Days in Mariupol.” I have never seen so many standing ovations at the Oscars ceremony in decades. That was a very powerful speech from the filmmaker behind “Mariupol.” Yeah, the ceremony will NOT be ending in three hours, as we still have nine categories to present trophies for in addition to at least two more musical performances. “Oppenheimer” added to its win count with a win for Best Cinematography for Hoyte Van Hoytema.

Best Live Action Short was an Oscar victory for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” just as Becky G took to the Oscar stage to perform “The Fire Inside” written by the Susan Lucci of the Oscars, Diane Warren. John Mulaney’s skit for Best Sound was a bit much, however, somewhat impressive considering all he knew about “Field of Dreams.” Surprise, “The Zone of Interest” won for Best Sound. I thought that might be a shoo-in for “Oppenheimer.” There is a little bit of love for everyone tonight, the one flick that has yet to see much love is “Barbie.”

Emma Stone won her second Oscar for Best Actress for her role in “Poor Things.”

I was truly dying to see this performance by Ryan Gosling as he sang, “I’m Just Ken.” Gosling can really sing and it was a spectacle to watch that entertained the entire crowd inside the Dolby Theatre and at home. “Wicked” stars Cynthia Enrivo and Ariana Grande presented the Oscars for Best Original Score and Original Song to Ludwig Goransoon for “Oppenheimer” and Billie Eilish and Finneas for “What Was I Made For?” Wow, Billie has two Oscars and she’s only 21. They might be for songwriting, but that is still damn impressive.

For Best Actor, we saw acting legends Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley, Nicholas Cage, Matthew McConaughey and Forest Whitaker. After all the dust settled, it was “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy who walked away with the prize. I was indeed hoping Paul Giamatti captured that trophy because he delivered a very nuanced performance in “The Holdovers.”

Film titan Steven Spielberg presented the Oscar for Best Director to the iconic Christopher Nolan, who after being overlooked one too many times, finally captured that illustrious prize for his fantastic “Oppenheimer.” Nolan was quite gracious in his acceptance speech.

For Best Actress we witnessed Jessica Lange, Jennifer Lawrence, Sally Field, Michelle Yeoh and Charlize Theron take the stage. Wow, these are indeed some acting legends here I mean Sally, and Jessica, bravo. This one was a nail biter, but it was Emma Stone who won the Oscar in a bit of an upset over Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Yeah, I think so many were expecting Lily to win, but Emma was super emotional as she took the stage.

Kimmel read an honest review of how someone perceived his hosting duties at the ceremony and joked that the posting might have been courtesy of Presidential Candidate Donald Trump and damn was that a stinger people.

The final prize of the night for Best Picture was presented by acting legend Al Pacino, I did not expect Pacino to take the stage and deliver the Oscar to “Oppenheimer.” The movie dominated the night earning a total of seven Oscars including Actor, Supporting Actor, Director and Best Picture. With that said, the 2024 Oscars are in the history books. The question that now remains is what can we expect for 2025? It’s early in the year, but I’m sure the buzz will start very soon. Until next year Oscar lovers!

LOS ANGELES—I said I wasn’t going to watch the Grammy Awards because the previous few years have been so disappointing, the ceremony tends to go way longer than any other award show during awards season, but I’m glad I watched. I can do without Trevor Noah as host; he does a little too much. Chill with the theatrics and let the music play out. The Grammys are similar to the Screen Actors Guild Awards; no host is needed. The night belonged to Taylor Swift who dominated 2023, and she might be dominating 2024 with an announcement she made and the fact that she made history yet again.

I mean the ceremony kicked off with a thrilling performance by Dua Lipa, but it was the star power that I think mattered more than anything for 2024. Mariah Carey, yes, that Mariah Carey presented the first award of the night for Best Pop Solo Performance to Miley Cyrus for “Flowers.” Miley was stunned to win the accolade and gave tremendous praise to an icon while on stage.

Another beautiful moment was witnessing Luke Combs perform his hit “Fast Car” alongside the iconic Tracy Champman, who first crafted the song decades ago. Karol G won the Grammy for Best Musica Urbana Album. The most nominated person at the 2024 Grammys, SZA took to the stage to perform her hit “Kill Bill” with plenty of epic theatrics. Billie Eilish took to the stage to perform that catchy tune for the blockbuster “Barbie,” “What Was I Made For.”

Miley Cyrus hit the stage to perform her massive hit “Flowers” and just gotta say Miley can belt a tune people. It was Lainey Wilson who walked away with the Grammy for Best Country Album for “Bell Bottom Country.” Lizzo presented the big prize for Best R&B Song to SZA for “Snooze.” It was a bit of a moment because SZA rushed to the stage after questions of whether she would take to the stage. She broke down in tears as she was giving her acceptance speech.

It is a song that has become catchier for me each time I hear it; it is Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire.” Rodrigo belted that ubiquitous tune through the crowd who screamed with cheers. U2 performed live from ‘The Sphere’ in Las Vegas and it was something iconic, but it would have been more iconic, if we could see it in person and not have things captured from a TV screen because from what has been said, that venue is iconic. Taylor Swift won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights.” Swift announced big news that her newest album will be dropping on April 19 and you already know the Swifties are in a tizzy with that announcement.

Stevie Wonder took the stage to pay tribute to the late great Tony Bennett. Wonder is still one of the greatest living musicians of my time; my parents love him and so many more generations do as well. Lenny Kravitz paid tribute to Clarence Avant who was coined the ‘The Black Godfather,’ with Jon Batiste performing “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Lean on Me” with assistance from a choir and Ann Nesby. Oprah Winfrey soon took to the stage to pay tribute to the late great Tina Turner.

It was indeed a treat to see Fantasia Barrino perform a medley of Turner’s iconic hits. I will admit I was hoping to see Beyonce pay tribute to the iconic legend after that performance she did with Tina at the Grammy’s nearly a decade ago. Jay-Z was honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award with his daughter Blue Ivy by his side. I was wondering where Beyonce was and he did give a shot out to his wife Beyonce (who was in the audience), who has had more wins than any other person in Grammy history with 32, yet she has not claimed the Album of the Year prize. That speech that left audible gasps in the audience. I love Jay-Z because he was being completely honest there.

Lionel Ritchie took the stage to present the Grammy for Song of the Year to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connor for “What Was I Made For?” Billie was really stunned when Lionel announced her name. Brandi Carlile introduced music legend Joni Mitchell who performed on the Grammy stage for the first time ever. Gotta say the last hour of the ceremony as per usual the Grammys dragged longer than it needed to. Again, you still have big prizes like Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist that have yet to be presented and the ceremony has already gone past three hours, with plenty of performances still to be shoved at the audience.

Three hours later the Grammy for Best New Artist went to Victoria Monet. I was happy for Victoria, but she did not need her entire entourage on stage to accept the award, it was for Best New Artist, not everyone else. It was a very authentic and gracious speech from Monet.

It was big night for Miley Cyrus who collected the prize for Record of the Year for “Flowers.” Have to say out of all the songs nominated in the race Cyrus had the catchiest of them all. Nearing almost 210 minutes, Billy Joel took to the stage to perform. FYI to the Grammys, you don’t wait until near the end of the ceremony to have Billy Joel perform, you have him hit the stage early in the ceremony.

The biggest trophy of the night, Album of the Year was presented by Celine Dion. Yes, I was wondering who would present the prize. Dion received a standing ovation as she took to the stage, amidst all the health battles she has endured recently. In the end it was Taylor Swift for “Midnights.” Yes, that is her fourth time collecting the top prize at the ceremony making history as the only person to ever accomplish such a feat. Icons like Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra have collected that prize three times.

With that, the 2024 Grammy Awards are kaput. For 2025, the Grammys have to find a way to shorten the ceremony in some fashion. The Grammys should NOT be longer than the Academy Awards, it just shouldn’t be, and it totally loses its steam as you near the final hurrah.

BEVERLY HILLS—The nominees for the 2024 Academy Awards, which we all know as the Oscars were announced on Tuesday, January 23 by actress Zazie Beetz and actor Jack Quaid via the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.  Would “Oppenheimer” or “Barbie” dominate? The answer might surprise you. “Oppenheimer” leads the pack with 13 nominations. Followed close behind was “Poor Things” with 11 nominations, “Barbie” with eight nominations and “Maestro” with seven nominations. What were the surprises and/or snubs?

America Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress, as I did not expect that one which took a spot from Sandra Huller “The Zone of Interest” or perhaps Julianne Moore for “May December.” Sterling K. Brown’s nomination in the Supporting Actor race meant Willem Dafoe who many thought was a lock for “Poor Things” missed the cut, as did Charles Melton who many predicted at the start of awards season would be a contender for “May December.” No love from the Academy for “The Color Purple” which only earned a solo nod for Danielle Brooks, who was incredible in the movie.

Annette Bening was a slight surprise in the Best Actress race, taking a spot many expected Margot Robbie to earn a nod for the blockbuster “Barbie.” However, the biggest shocks came in the Best Director race. I mean Alexander Payne was missing for “The Holdovers,” so was Greta Gerwig for “Barbie,” two candidates many expected to land nods.

However, it was good news for Justine Triet who earned a nomination for “Anatomy of a Fall.” The other semi-surprise was Jonathan Glazer for “The Zone of Interest.” This is why I love Oscar, because they always deliver the curveballs people never expect shaking up awards season which makes things less predictable.

There was also lots of love for “American Fiction” so can that momentum turn into Oscar love? A full list of this year’s nominees is listed below:

The 96th annual Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 10. The ceremony will once again be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the famed Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The ceremony will air live on ABC at 7 p.m. EST, a change from recent years where the ceremony has always aired at 8 p.m. Interesting change, I must say.
