SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, November 25, city officials were informed after suspicious activity was reported at a rehabilitation facility located at 413 Ocean Avenue. Multiple calls regarding vans of people dropped off at the facility in the dark of night raising public concern.

On Friday, 11/28, our city team – Building and Safety, Code Enforcement, Fire and Housing conducted a full inspection of 413 Ocean Ave after community concerns were raised. Due to public demand, the building was inspected and did not meet code. Multiple reports indicate that the sober living facility was at the very least operating without a license.

The facility has since been ordered to relocate their patients and were ordered to vacate the premises within 24 hours.

Reports indicate that people were coming in from out of state under the guise of rehabilitation. Concerned residents have publicly accused the state of allowing these pop-up drug and rehabilitation centers to conduct business without verifying their credentials. The patients are lured in while they are at their most vulnerable. Their insurance is charged for their “services.”

Public records indicate that the business located at 413 Ocean Avenue operated as a sobriety clinic.

They did not have the proper business license to operate a housing facility of this nature. Nor were they in receipt of the proper permits needed.

There was no certificate of occupancy.

City officials rendered the site unsafe and unpermitted for its current operation.

The operator of the business was reportedly directed to cease all activity until compliance standards were met. Initially, this did not happen. The premises have since been vacated.

Los Angeles County Supervisor, Lindsey Horvath previously ordered the termination of two rehabilitation centers; the sobriety living facility mentioned here, and a similar facility located at 825 Ocean Avenue. Both were initially part of a project to provide beds for those experiencing homelessness complicated by addiction and behavioral issues.

These are the same places earmarked for rehab that Santa Monicans complained about in the beginning. Many spoke out against the use of some of the most expensive properties in Santa Monica as a rehabilitation and homeless project.

Horvath ordered those in charge of operations to find a more suitable dwelling place.

Santa Monica Mayor, Lana Negrete, responded to the state’s findings.

“These are not allegations. These are the City’s documented findings. People deserve dignity, stability, and real oversight. Policy reforms are already in motion to prevent this from happening again.”

ST. LUCIE, FL—On November 13, Indian National, Harjinder Singh, who has been charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter in St. Lucie County, Florida, appeared virtually before the St. Lucie County Judge for a routine docket call. Singh was zooming in for the proceedings from St. Lucie County Jail where he has been since his arrest on August 16, in Stockton, California.

According to an August 19 press release issued by the U.S. Marshal’s Office, Singh, “allegedly operating a semi-truck that attempted to make a U-Turn and crossed directly in front of a vehicle, causing the vehicle to crash into the trailer and killing three people in the vehicle. The crash happened on Florida’s turnpike in St. Lucie County August 12, 2025.”

The following came directly from the press release on the DHS website.

“Video obtained from Breaking 911 from inside the tractor trailer shows the exact moment Singh decided to break U.S. highway laws as he turned his truck into traffic – his face shows no shock or remorse for his actions or the lives he destroyed”.

Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, and President Trump have both called out the authorities who have repeatedly granted a license to this individual who entered the country illegally and has a history of serious motor vehicle infractions on his record.

In 2019, he was reportedly responsible for a bridge collapse in Yell County, Arkansas after he drove over a bridge in a truck that exceeded the weight limit of the bridge by 64,000 lbs. Singh received a citation and was released without bail.

Reports indicate that Singh has obtained his CDL license in multiple states including California.

The following came directly from the press release of the U.S. Marshal’s office.
“An investigation revealed Singh and his passenger, Harneet Singh, flew to Sacramento, California, August 13. An arrest warrant was issued August 15. He allegedly entered the United States illegally in 2018 and obtained a California Commercial Driver’s License.
U.S. Marshals received the warrant and associated information from FHP August 16, and collateral lead was sent to the Eastern District of California. U.S. Marshals and Task Force Officers responded to an address associated with Singh in Stockton. They identified Singh as the lone occupant of a vehicle that arrived during surveillance of the location.
Singh was taken into custody without incident. He was booked at the San Joaquin County Jail to await initial appearance. An immigration detainer was also filed on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

The U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi issued the following statement.
“Our great Director of the U.S. Marshal Service(USMS), Gadayces Serralta, has worked incredibly hard to support the Florida Highway Patrol and apprehend this dangerous illegal alien whowill now face justice. Sanctuary states like California must end their lawless policies to protect innocent American lives.”

Serralta stated that, “This priority effort was a cross-country, multi-state, and multi-agency success. This again proves our dedication to bring criminals to justice for what they have done no matter where they run.”

BERKELEY—On November 10, violent protests broke out at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event held on the UC campus. The event was held on the two-month anniversary of the TPUSA’s founder, Charlie Kirk, drawing close to 2,000 people. Some agitators were there disrupting everything while the rest of the people were there mourning and celebrating the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk.

Protesters, and ANTIFA members set fires, robbed and assaulted people around Zellerbach Hall on the Berkeley campus, leading to the arrest of at least six.

TPUSA spokesperson, Andrew Kolvet posted about the event on his X social media page.

“Despite Antifa thugs blocking our campus tour stop with tear gas, fireworks, and glass bottles, we had a packed house in the heart of dep blue UC Berkeley. God bless these brave students,” signed “For Charlie.”

Reports indicate that Muslim rapper, and far-left extremist, Jihad Dphrepaulezz, also known as, “A.R. The Believer,” of Oakland, was arrested after severely beating and robbing a TPUSA supporter. Dphrepaulezz reportedly grabbed a chain necklace off an attendee, starting a fight that left a Charlie Kirk supporter, covered in blood.

Frontlines TPUSA caught the altercation on video.

On his linkedin account, Dphrepaulezz falsely claimed that he was employed by the California Department of Public Health.

Unverified reports indicate that the singer, Xavier Dphrepaulezz, aka, “Fantastic Negrito,” from Oakland is the uncle of Jihad Dphrepaulezz.

Mark Smith, the Information Officer II of the California Department of Public Health refuted this claim with the following statement.

“Violence and hate have no place in our communities. The California
Department of Public Health (CDPH) remains committed to serving all
Californians with integrity, respect, and a deep commitment to public
health and safety.

We are aware of reports circulating online regarding an individual who
was involved in an altercation at a recent event at UC Berkeley and
claims that this person is an employee of CDPH. We have no employment
record for an individual with that name.”

Canyon News apologizes for the misprint.  Canyon News prides itself in being one of the only unbiased newspapers in the area. It is our deepest regret that this person’s lie was reposted in our newspaper.

A former USC student, Jay Eduardo Maytorrena, 22, was arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest/obstructing an officer.

Christopher Joseph Benton, 48, who was not affiliated with USC, was arrested for having an unlawful presence on campus and resisting arrest/obstructing an officer.

In addition four unnamed women, were also arrested for felony vandalism.

LOS ANGELES—On November 11, news reports began to circulate regarding the November 4, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest of a Moldovan National who has been residing in the U.S. illegally for over a decade after being convicted of murder. Victoria Sorocean, was taken into custody once ICE learned of her where abouts. She was convicted in 2013 of premeditated murder with exceptional cruelty.

In a November 11, press release the U.S. Department of Homeland Security wrote the following.

“In September2013, Sorocean and an accomplice were convicted of intentional murder. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Sorocean, and an accomplice tortured their victim in an apartment in Chisinau, Moldova. They beat the victim with a stick and electrical cable before throwing the victim out a ninth-floor window.”

DHS continued, “Sorocean fled the United States under the first Trump Administration. ICE arrested her on January 10, 2020.” Following her arrest, Sorocean filed multiple appeals with the Board of Immigration Appeals under the guise of an asylum seeker.

In 2022, Sorocean was released back into the country under the Biden Administration.

Tricia McLaughlin, the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, issued the following statement.

“It shocks the conscience that the Biden Administration released into America a cruel violent illegal alien who tortured a human being, beat them with an electrical cable and a stick and threw her out a ninth-floor window. These are the types of barbaric criminal illegal aliens ICE is targeting every single day. 70 percent of all ICE arrests are of illegal aliens charged or convicted of crime in the U.S. This does not even include foreign fugitives like this convicted murderer. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, the world’s criminals are no longer welcome in the U.S.”

Sorocean is to remain in ICE custody until deportation proceedings begin.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal have faced challenges in Los Angeles County. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and California Governor Gavin Newsom have taken issue the presence of ICE agents in Los Angeles County, and with President Trump using the U.S. Army National Guard for crowd control while Immigration and Customs agents execute active warrants in the area.

AG Bonta, Governor Newsom, for attempting to evacuate undocumented people with criminal records who are residing in Los Angeles County illegally.

Bonta, Newsom, and Bass have vowed to fight President Trump to the Supreme Court to offer protections for immigrants like Victoria Sorocean.

WASHINGTON DC—On Thursday, November 6, Speaker Emerita, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced in a six-minute video that she would not be seeking reelection to Congress. Her term will end on January 3, 2027, just a few months shy of her 87th birthday.

“For decades I have cherished the privilege of representing our magnificent city in the United States Congress. There has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, I speak for the people of San Francisco.

I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress. That is why I want you, my fellow San Franciscans to be the first to know, I will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to serving my final year in service as your proud representative.

As we go forward, my message to the city that I love is this; San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”

Nancy Patricia Pelosi, nee D’Alesandro was born into a large political family in 1940. She was the daughter of Thomas D’Alesandro, the former Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland (1947-1959). He too served as a member of Congress (D-MD) for multiple years including 76th (1939–1941), 77th (1941–1943), 78th (1943–1945), 79th (1945–1947), and 80th (1947–1949).

Paul and Nancy Pelosi resided in New York prior to settling in the San Francisco Bay area. The Pelosi’s reside in the Pacific Heights area. Nancy Pelosi is currently serving her 20th year in congress representing California’s 11th Congressional District which includes the majority of San Francisco. She has held this position since 1987.

Nancy Pelosi was elected as the first woman speaker of the House in 1987, serving in that role through 2011, and again from 2019-2023.

Pelosi was an advocate for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), abortion, and LGBTQ rights. She was one of the first politicians pictured kneeling for the flag next to her fellow democrat constituents.

California’s Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom has familial ties to the Pelosi’s through marriage. They are not blood relatives, but Nancy Pelosi’s sister-in-law was married to Gavin Newsom’s uncle.

In contrast, Rep. Maxine Waters, (D-CA) who is currently 87, has announced her intent to run for congress in California’s 43rd district once again on November 3, 2026. Ballotpedia is keeping track of which members of the U.S. Congress will/will not be seeking reelection.

LOS ANGELES—On Thursday, October 23, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Chipotle Mexican Grill, the national restaurant chain with over 500 stores in California settled a consumer protection lawsuit alleging it failed to allow consumers in the state to cash out Chipotle gift cards with a remaining balance of less than $10.

The final judgment, which was entered in Ventura County Superior Court, totals $246,000, including:

-Civil penalties: $145,467 total; $36,367 to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office

-Investigative costs: $88,533 total; $20,000 to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office

-Restitution: $12,000 to the California Consumer Protection Prosecution Trust Fund to enhance investigation, prosecution and enforcement of consumer protection actions brought pursuant to California unfair competition statutes

“Consumers are watching every penny in today’s economy and should never have to fight for rights guaranteed under state law,” said Rafael Carbajal, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs. “This settlement makes clear that Los Angeles County will hold businesses accountable when they fail to follow consumer laws.”

The judgment, in which the company denied any wrongdoing provides the following injunctive relief for a period of four years:

-Chipotle must create and maintain a website portal, initially accessible at chipotle.com/gift-card-cashback, where consumers can request a refund for any card that carries a balance of less than $10. To obtain a refund, California consumers must enter their gift card’s identifying information.

-Chipotle must ensure that its new gift certificates, including those purchased through third parties, contain an updated notice on the front or back alerting California consumers that they may redeem the gift card for cash when its cash value is less than $10. The notice must include the website where consumers can obtain the refund.

-The company cannot use the information associated with gift card redemptions provided by California consumers for any other purposes unrelated to the redemptions such as advertising or marketing without consumers’ consent to these unrelated activities.

The lawsuit was led by the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and included the assistance of the district attorney’s offices of Los Angeles, Shasta, and Sonoma counties, as well as the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs.

Atlas Iron and Metal operated in Watts since 1949, processing scrap metal and electronic waste. Environmental investigations dating back to 2017 revealed multiple violations. Soil testing at nearby Jordan High School showed excessive levels of lead and zinc, while samples from the Atlas site contained dangerously high concentrations of seven metals.

On August 12, 2024, as students arrived for their first day of classes, an explosion erupted at the facility. There were no reports of any injuries, but the blast underscored the serious risk the site posed to the community.

District Attorney Hochman commended Deputy District Attorneys Daniel Wright and Cynthia Valenzuela of the Environmental Crimes Division, the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation, the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Health Hazardous Materials Division, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, and LAUSD for their instrumental work in securing the outcome in court.

CALIFORNIA—On October 16, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Glendale resident reportedly captured video footage of a bear literally taking out his trash.  It is time for bears to forage for food before hibernating.  Bears are not the only ones making an appearance this time of year in California.  Male tarantulas are coming out for mating season. Rattlesnakes are also on the move during the month of October.

Footage of the bear, recorded by Roberto Morales, went viral as the bear goes dumpster diving only to emerge with his white trash bag full of garbage.  He then carries it to a neighboring yard to eat.

The following information on bears comes directly from the California Fish And Wildlife publication, “Bear Wise.”

“Bears’ appetites are biologically programmed to go into hyperdrive in the fall because they need to put on a thick layer of life-sustaining fat before they turn in for the winter. This annual power-eating marathon is called hyperphagia.

Hyperphagia is in full swing now because many fruits and berries (soft mast) are still available, calorie-dense acorns and nuts (hard mast) are ripening, and bears’ body clocks are ticking louder and louder. During hyperphagia, bears are like Olympic athletes in training. They must consume ten times as many calories as they need during the spring and summer if they’re going to den-up in tip-top shape. That means finding 20,000 calories a day or more. That’s a lot of nuts and berries.”

Bears are not the only ones on the move this time of year.  Snakes are on the move as well.  Rattlesnake season in California is from April through the end of October.  According to California Fish and Wildlife, Southern California is home to seven species of rattlesnakes, two of which are made up of more than one subspecies.  That’s the equivalent of approximately 10 forms of rattlesnakes in the state.

Most reptiles lay eggs.  Like copperheads, rattlesnakes have live births. The mother rattler can give birth to up to 25 neonates (Pups/Babies) at one time.  On average a mother rattler gives birth to approximately eight young.  They stay with her for the first two weeks of their lives before wandering off on their own.

Wildlife experts warn Californians to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes in October because they will typically den up sometime between October and November.

October is a good time to see one of California’s largest Arachnida, the tarantula.  Scientists report that the gentle giant normally keeps to itself coming between dusk and dawn at times.  An unusual amount of tarantula sitings is reported in Autumn. The reason is that Fall is the mating season for tarantulas.  The male tarantulas are on the prowl this time of year, searching for their mate.

CALIFORNIA—On Wednesday, October 15, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that 13 LA County employees from seven different agencies were charged with felony grand theft for stealing state unemployment benefits totaling $437,383 between 2020 and 2023. Each of the 13 Los Angeles County employees was charged with one felony count of grand theft and one lesser included misdemeanor offense.

The employees earned more than $600 a week, making them ineligible for unemployment benefits.

At the Santa Monica City Council Meeting, Mayor Negrete requested a detailed “Agenda Item 16B” in time for the October 14 City Council meeting.

This was to include details on the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and the non-profit, St. Joseph Center, the new Behavioral Health Bridge Housing Development coming soon to 413 and 825 Ocean Avenue.

Reports indicate the new mental health facility is to include 49 beds for members of the homeless/unhoused community with moderate to severe mental illness. The new St. Joseph’s mental health facility will include clinicians and security staff present 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Santa Monica residents are to take precedence. The center is to be funded through grants and state resources.

Mayor Negrete and the Santa Monica City Council remain under scrutiny from those living in the area. Real estate mogul Tyler Bindi aired his views in a post on X.

“Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica is home to some of the most expensive land in the country. Multimillion-dollar homes, five-star hotels, ocean views.

And now, LA County has decided this was the best spot to build a 49-bed mental health housing facility for individuals with severe mental illness. From a land-use standpoint, it’s baffling.

Turning irreplaceable, oceanfront real estate into government-funded mental health housing. Only in California.”

As of April 2025, the California Health Care Foundation reports that one in seven adults in California lives with a mental condition. One in twenty-six people struggles with a serious mental illness that markedly affects their daily lives.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that 5,566,000 adults in California have some sort of mental illness, and 1,243 adults live with a serious mental condition.

In 2023, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 31.7 percent of adults living in California reported symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder, in contrast to 32.3 percent of adults nationwide.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On October 8, the California U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a press release announcing the arrest of Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, aka “Jonathan Rinder,” aka “Jon Rinder,” of Florida for starting the Palisades Fire. He made his first appearance in court today. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Assayli made the following statement:

“The complaint alleges that a single person’s recklessness caused one of the worst fires Los Angeles has ever seen, resulting in death and widespread destruction in Pacific Palisades. While we cannot bring back what victims lost, we hope this criminal case brings some measure of justice to those affected by this horrific tragedy.”

Special Agent in Charge, Kenny Cooper from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Los Angeles Field Division spoke on the tremendous loss homeowners suffered due to the fire:

“At the request of the state and local authorities, [Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms] lead this complex investigation utilizing techniques unique to our agency’s capabilities. The horrific loss of life and property was significantly felt by ATF members, and we are honored to utilize our expertise to provide answers to the community. We remain committed to serving with integrity and distinction.”

Official reports from an affidavit filed with the complaint, law enforcement determined that the Palisades fire began with the Lachman fire that started in the early morning hours on January 1, 2025. Firefighters extinguished that fire in a timely fashion. Unbeknownst to all, the fire continued to smolder, beneath the ground, burning roots and dense vegetation.

On January 7, heavy winds blew new life into the fire spreading quickly throughout Pacific Palisades causing mass destruction and irreparable damage.

Investigators were able to confirm through surveillance footage, cell phone data, and other analysis that it was Rinderknecht who originally set the Lachman Fire just after midnight on New Years Day.

According to a press release by the California U.S. Attorney’s office the land where Rinderknecht set the fire was owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). Within a week’s time, the fire spread burning federal property.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, who was working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve in 2024, made two separate trips to that area. Local law enforcement later noted that they spoke to Rinderknecht that night, and he appeared agitated.

After he dropped off his last passenger(s), Rinderknecht, who had once lived in the area, took a ride up to Skull Rock Tailhead. He called an old friend as he walked up the trail. He was listening to a rap song. The beats on video depict catching things on fire.

Authorities confirmed that the fire began on January 1, precisely at 12:12 a.m. Rinderknecht indicated that he attempted to call 911 several times but could not get through. He was out of range and could not connect the call until he was at the bottom of the hiking trail when he reported the fire. By that time, a neighbor had already notified authorities.

Rinderknecht fled the scene of the crime at a high rate of speed, stopping at just after 1:00 a.m. to take cell phone video of the fire he created.

The following information came directly from the press release:

“If convicted, Rinderknecht would face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
ATF is investigating this matter, with substantial assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department and the United States Forest Service.”

IRVINE—On October 8, video footage captured of an interview CBS correspondent, Julie Watts, interviewing gubernatorial candidate, Katie Porter (D-CA). In the interview, Watts asks Porter how she intends to get the vote of the forty percent of the voters who voted for Trump. Porter’s response was to ask for clarification.

https://youtu.be/0tVQTV_EHII?si=yazNYAHKeJVWXWUn

“What do you say to the 40% of California voters, who you’ll need in order to win, who voted for Trump?” asked Watts.

“How would I need them in order to win,” Porter asks. Julie Watts reiterates her question in multiple ways to ask how she intended to get those votes before Mrs. Porter gets upset and walks out of the interview, but not before saying, “I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m going to call it…. I don’t want to have an unhappy experience with you,” and “I don’t want to have this on camera.”

The whole interview has gone viral on YouTube. Porter, who formerly served as a State Representative of California’s 45th district, stated in the interview that she was a leader and felt that she had the Democratic vote.

As the interviewer, Watts can be heard making multiple attempts to give Porter the chance to answer the same question she asked the other candidates running, before Porter walked out of the interview.

The most common responses to the interview suggest that Mrs. Porter “needs anger management.”

Reports indicate that prior to this interview Porter was lagging approximately six percentage points behind Republican, Steve Hilton. The General election will be held on November 3, 2026. There are several other candidates in the running. Porter was the lead Democrat, and the only one to come close to the support that Hilton has in a state that at one time was historically red.

Porter was under some scrutiny prior to this explosive interview. Multiple news reports indicate that her ex-husband had a protective order against her after she threw a pot of scalding hot mashed potatoes at him. There were no police reports available to confirm or deny that she ever burned her then-husband, Matthew Hoffman.

California’s current Governor, Gavin Newsom, has term limits preventing him from running for Governor again. Political experts have indicated that Newsom would likely be the democratic nominee in the 2028 Presidential election.

SAN FRANCISCO—October 8, is the latest court date scheduled for career criminal, Troy McAlister who has been charged with 91 felonies. On Friday, October 3, McAlister’s attorney Scott Grant requested the court to grant his client mental health and substance abuse diversion under California Penal Code §1001.36 in lieu of decades of prison time his client is facing for his crimes.

Photo Credit: Connected SF Via X

He has been incarcerated since December 31, 2020, when he stole a car while high on meth and tragically hit and killed 27-year-old Hanako Abe and 60-year 0ld, Elizabeth Platt at a cross walk. McAlister is approximately 50 years old.

His most recent charges include two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of drugs causing injury, possession of a firearm with a prior [felony] conviction, the transportation, sale, and sharing of a controlled substance, unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle [auto-theft], and vandalism exceeding $400.

Reports indicate that McAlister was on parole and high on methamphetamines when he ran a red light and struck and killed two women on New Year’s Eve in 2020.

Protestors have gathered outside City Hall calling McAlister’s request for rehabilitation, an “Insult to Justice.”

Scott Jacobs, the Director of Blueprint for a Better San Francisco first told KTVU-TV that, “While there’s certain people who should be granted diversion and ultimately given the opportunity to rebuild their lives, Troy McAlister has demonstrated that despite being given that opportunity multiple times, he has continued to pose a threat to San Franciscans, and we believe he needs to be in jail.”

The motion has triggered a group effort in 2022 to recall former District Attorney, and new founding executive director of Berkeley’s Criminal Law and Justice Center, Chase Boudin who released the multiple criminal offender who went on to kill both Hanako Abe and Elizabeth Platt.

On October 3, San Franciscans spoke on behalf of Elizabeth Platt and Hanako Abe holding signs in remembrance of the victims who died at the hands of a released felon.

The state of California and Governor Gavin Newsom remain under scrutiny for being soft on crime. Governor Newsom has closed multiple prisons and granted pardons for hardened criminals. Now it will be up to Judge Michael Begert to execute justice in the case and decide if McAlister qualifies for rehabilitation over prison time.
