PACIFIC PALISADES—On Tuesday, November 4, the Los Angeles Fire Department received a federal grand jury subpoena issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California regarding internal communications about the department’s response to both the Lachman Fire and the Pacific Palisades Fire.

This subpoena is part of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigation into the forest fires. It also legally requires the Los Angeles Fire Department to turn over documents and internal data.

In addition, the fire department needs to turn over communications sent and received between 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 10 a.m. on January 7 regarding reports of hotspots, smoke, and fire that occurred between the Temescal Ridge Trail and the Leacock Trailhead.

The subpoena requires all officers of the Los Angeles Fire Department to turn over to the federal investigators screenshots of the text messages they received on their devices issued to them by the department about any calls, dispatches, or communications about the Lachman Fire and the Pacific Palisades Fire.

It is the same with text messages and calls that the officers received on their personal devices.

PACIFIC PALISADES—Firefighters who were attempting to put out the underground Lachman Fire, which started burning on New Year’s Day and later became the Pacific Palisades Forest Fire, were ordered to abandon their efforts.

According to the text messages exchanged between firefighters, their Battalion Head ordered them to end their operations and leave the scene on January 2, 2025, as it was announced that the fire was contained.

Firefighters wanted to stay and check for any hidden embers that could spark another fire.  They reported to their Battalion Chief that the ground continued to smolder and that the rocks felt hot when they were touched.

After the firefighters departed, the Lachman Fire continued to burn underground. On January 7, 2025, the fire was rekindled by strong winds that led to the Palisades Fire which destroyed thousands of properties and businesses in Malibu and Pacific Palisades. That fire also sparked the Altadena Fire that destroyed thousands of businesses, schools and homes in the area.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On Wednesday, October 15, a federal grand jury indicted Jonathan Rinderknecht for starting the Pacific Palisades fire. Now, the leaders of PETA in the Los Angeles area also want him to be prosecuted by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office on charges of animal cruelty.

Sarah Deffinger, who is a senior analyst in PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department, sent a letter to Nathan Hochman, the Los Angeles District Attorney, stating that the Pacific Palisades fire harmed and terrorized both wild and domestic animals.

This includes the pets of Annette Rossilli, who refused to leave her home because she did not want to leave her group of pets. She owned two parrots, a turtle, as well as a canary named Pepper, and a dog named Greetly. In addition, a cat named Aggie survived for two months on her own because her owner could not find her after the fire had destroyed the owner’s home. The West Los Angeles Animal Shelter later rescued Aggie.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On October 8, the California U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a press release announcing the arrest of Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, aka “Jonathan Rinder,” aka “Jon Rinder,” of Florida for starting the Palisades Fire. He made his first appearance in court today. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Assayli made the following statement:

“The complaint alleges that a single person’s recklessness caused one of the worst fires Los Angeles has ever seen, resulting in death and widespread destruction in Pacific Palisades. While we cannot bring back what victims lost, we hope this criminal case brings some measure of justice to those affected by this horrific tragedy.”

Special Agent in Charge, Kenny Cooper from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Los Angeles Field Division spoke on the tremendous loss homeowners suffered due to the fire:

“At the request of the state and local authorities, [Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms] lead this complex investigation utilizing techniques unique to our agency’s capabilities. The horrific loss of life and property was significantly felt by ATF members, and we are honored to utilize our expertise to provide answers to the community. We remain committed to serving with integrity and distinction.”

Official reports from an affidavit filed with the complaint, law enforcement determined that the Palisades fire began with the Lachman fire that started in the early morning hours on January 1, 2025. Firefighters extinguished that fire in a timely fashion. Unbeknownst to all, the fire continued to smolder, beneath the ground, burning roots and dense vegetation.

On January 7, heavy winds blew new life into the fire spreading quickly throughout Pacific Palisades causing mass destruction and irreparable damage.

Investigators were able to confirm through surveillance footage, cell phone data, and other analysis that it was Rinderknecht who originally set the Lachman Fire just after midnight on New Years Day.

According to a press release by the California U.S. Attorney’s office the land where Rinderknecht set the fire was owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). Within a week’s time, the fire spread burning federal property.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, who was working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve in 2024, made two separate trips to that area. Local law enforcement later noted that they spoke to Rinderknecht that night, and he appeared agitated.

After he dropped off his last passenger(s), Rinderknecht, who had once lived in the area, took a ride up to Skull Rock Tailhead. He called an old friend as he walked up the trail. He was listening to a rap song. The beats on video depict catching things on fire.

Authorities confirmed that the fire began on January 1, precisely at 12:12 a.m. Rinderknecht indicated that he attempted to call 911 several times but could not get through. He was out of range and could not connect the call until he was at the bottom of the hiking trail when he reported the fire. By that time, a neighbor had already notified authorities.

Rinderknecht fled the scene of the crime at a high rate of speed, stopping at just after 1:00 a.m. to take cell phone video of the fire he created.

The following information came directly from the press release:

“If convicted, Rinderknecht would face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
ATF is investigating this matter, with substantial assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department and the United States Forest Service.”

LOS ANGELES—Our Congressional Representative, Brad Sherman (D) CA-32, has been in Washington, D.C. for 15-Terms, 30-Years. Do you know who he is? He is a living example of what you get when you live in a one-party state with no congressional term limits. He has been around forever and done nothing. No decision he has ever made in three decades has been seriously challenged by anyone. He has had to show no accountability…and he has made many unbelievably bad and costly decisions for us. And now, he has left us in a mess.

Sherman has learned how to “quietly” do nothing. He distances himself from controversy. He’s not a leader…He’s a follower. Not a thinker…A party “yes man.” He always shows up one day too late to act as if he’s helping, but instead, he awkwardly just stands there doing nothing with his goofy smile.

How much has he cost you personally? As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, Sherman has consistently led the fight to kill Bitcoin and all Cryptocurrencies. In fact, having so many financial institutions as supporters, he has advocated “outlawing” digital currencies. So, as it turns out, he has been on the wrong side of history for over 15 years. He has tried to stop the future. Bitcoin started trading in July of 2010 for $0.05 per coin. If you had bought just one Bitcoin, then or even in 2016 (just nine years ago) for $400 a coin it would be worth $124,005 today. So much for his negative rhetoric, hollow scare tactics, financial advice, and proposed killer legislation.

He chimed in with the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris LIE that the border was secure when in fact it wasn’t, and they knew it. He kept silent when Biden struggled mentally in his campaign. He claims to support Israel…sometimes. He continues to stall in leading a solution to the Metro Transit Project connecting the San Fernando Valley to LA’s West side. The endless delays have been bogged down by his accountant-due-diligence mentality instead of having an assertive vision with momentum to get it done.

As a career politician who has never earned more than $174,000 a year, he has a home in Los Angeles and a home in Washington, D.C. worth an estimated $14 Million dollars. How is that mathematically possible? Well, I said he was an accountant.

Regarding the Palisades and Malibu fires, I agree with real estate billionaire and former LA Mayoral candidate, Rick Caruso, who proclaims, “If it’s predictable it’s preventable.” Sherman and Mayor Karen Bass, both career politicians, don’t practice preventive governance, but instead, they rely on remedial governance.

Sherman claims and implies that Sherman Oaks and Sherman Way were named after him and his family. That’s simply a lie. Sherman Oaks and Sherman Way were named after General Moses Hazeltine Sherman (1853-1932). He was a land developer and entrepreneur from Vermont who came to California in the late 1800s and founded Sherman Oaks development. If Brad Sherman will lie about a town being named after him and his family, what else will he lie about?

It’s time for a change. My name is Larry Thompson, and I am running for United States Congress. This will be my second attempt to unseat Sherman. In the recent 2024 election, I received over 108,000 votes, which is the most votes ever received by a candidate running against him.

With your help, I plan to defeat him this time.

I am a Christian first. A Conservative second. A Republican third.

I am a member of Turning Point USA and Stand With Crypto . I am a compassionate, intelligent, experienced businessman who uses Common Sense. I am running for Congress to awaken, organize, and unite the dissatisfied Democratic voter, the canceled conservative voter, and the undecided No Party Preference voter. Visit: www.LarryThompsonForCongress.com

I have been endorsed by the California Republican Party, the Los Angeles County Republican Party, the Ventura County Republican Party, California Young Republicans, California College Republicans, Los Angeles County Young Republicans, the American Independent Party, Brock Pierce, Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, David Hernandez, Chairman of the Los Angeles Hispanic Republican Club, and Regional Vice Chair of CAGOP’s Los Angeles County, and Kelsey Grammer, among many others. Visit my 32-Point Political Vision at Larry Thompson For Congress – 32 Points

Democrats and Non-Party Preference voters, I believe I will earn all or most of the Republican votes, but I cannot win without your votes also. You have voted for Sherman for 30 years…! What about giving me a shot? My term would only be for two years. If I don’t do a better job than him, vote me out in 2028 and put him or another Democrat back in.

California’s District 32, where I am running against Sherman, encompasses at this time the communities of Bel-Air, Bell Canyon, Beverly Glen, Brentwood, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Encino, Malibu, North Hills, Northridge, Pacific Palisades, Reseda, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Tarzana, Topanga, West Hills, Winnetka, and Woodland Hills. The district traditionally trends Democratic by a large margin of 70-30.

I know, it’s difficult to make a party change. Change isn’t just difficult. Sometimes, it feels impossible.

You know the feeling. You make a bold decision — to eat healthier, end a toxic relationship, move to a new city, leave that job, start that business, finally go after the life you keep pretending, you’re not afraid of. You start out strong, your heart full of conviction. But weeks—or even days—later, you find yourself back where you started, sabotaging your progress or convincing yourself it was never worth it anyway. And then comes the shame.

You wonder why everyone else seems to manage change so gracefully while you’re drowning in self-doubt. You ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” But the truth is: nothing is wrong with you. Change is not a straight path. It is a reckoning. A grief. A rebirth. A neurological, psychological, and emotional storm that stirs up every part of your identity. It’s not that you’re weak. It’s that you’re human.

American author, speaker, and pastor, Dr. John Maxwell, says, “When it comes to change, there are three seasons of timing: People change 1. when they hurt enough that they have to, 2. when they learn enough that they want to, and 3. when they receive enough that they are able to.”

Are you in any one of these three seasons?

Isn’t it time you tried something new to build a future for you and your children? Sometimes the person that brought you here isn’t the person you need to guide you forward.

Think about it. Vote for change. Vote for Larry Thompson for Congress.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On Monday, September 29, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that three people had been charged with falsely claiming they were residents of Altadena and the Pacific Palisades and fraudulently obtaining more than $40,000 in disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency intended for victims of the January 2025 Los Angeles County wildfires.

Jerry Lee Clay Jr., 43, of Los Angeles is charged in case 25CJCF05331 with one felony count of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument; one felony count of grand theft; and two felony counts of unauthorized use of personal identifying information.

Clay allegedly submitted a fraudulent FEMA application using a Pacific Palisades residence at which he did not live and an apartment number that does not exist, ultimately stealing $14,919.30 in federal disaster assistance in January and February 2025.

The funds were deposited into his personal account and used for purposes unrelated to the federal disaster claims. He is also accused of impersonating individuals he falsely claimed were his landlords in documents submitted to FEMA to verify tenancy claims and further his scheme.

Clay was arrested on September 14 and arraigned on September 16. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. His bail was set at $50,000 and Clay was released on bond. A preliminary hearing is set for September 30 in Department 31 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. If convicted as charged, Clay faces four years and four months in state prison.

Matthew Garnet O’Brien, 44, of Los Angeles is charged in case 25CJCF05780 with one felony count of offering a forged or false instrument and one felony count of grand theft.

O’Brien is accused of stealing $12,314.52 from FEMA in January and February 2025 after submitting a fraudulent FEMA application misrepresenting his residential address as a home in Altadena. The funds were deposited into his personal accounts and used for purposes unrelated to the federal disaster claims.

O’Brien surrendered to law enforcement on September 25. He was released on his own recognizance. His arraignment is set for November 25 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. If convicted as charged, O’Brien faces three years in state prison.

Maricka Marie Gilmore, 37, of Marrero, Louisiana, is charged in case 25CJCF05310 with one felony count each of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument and grand theft.

Gilmore allegedly submitted a FEMA application using a Pacific Palisades residence that she did not live and an apartment number that does not exist. She is accused of stealing $14,153.67 from FEMA in February 2025. The funds were deposited into her personal account and used for purposes unrelated to the federal disaster claims.

Gilmore was extradited from Louisiana to Los Angeles on September 23 and is being held on $50,000 bail. Arraignment was set for Monday in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. If convicted as charged, Gilmore faces three years in state prison.

The three felony complaints were filed for warrant on August 21. The cases are being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Benyomin Forer of the Cyber Crime Division and remain under investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On January 7, 2025, a destructive wildfire broke out in the Santa Monica Mountains and quickly spread outward, destroying communities in the Pacific Palisades, as well as Topanga and Malibu. The cause of the fire has been under investigation by the city of Los Angeles. However, the city has been asked by federal prosecutors to delay the release of its report.

The reason for this is that federal prosecutors are conducting their investigation into the cause of the Pacific Palisades fire. In particular, they are seeking to determine whether the fire was connected to a second, and smaller, fire that occurred on New Year’s Day. This event was known as the Lachman fire, which the firefighters thought they had extinguished.

BRENTWOOD/PACIFIC PALISADES—The Los Angeles Fire Department had to rescue two hikers recently in Brentwood and Pacific Palisades.

On Friday, August 15, officials received a report of a hiker in trouble at 11:40 a.m. at Mandeville Canyon Park.

LAFD ground and air responded to an exhausted octogenarian male hiker on a remote section of the Westridge Spur Trail south of the Mandeville Fire Road in Mandeville Canyon Park.

An LAFD Rescue Helicopter lowered a Flight Paramedic to medically assess the patient, who declined hospital transport. The LAFD air crew hoisted the man and LAFD Flight Paramedic into the hovering helicopter for transfer to a safe landing location at Will Rogers Park. No additional details about the incident has been disclosed to the public.

On Saturday, August 16, a hiker had to be rescued after the LAFD received a call at 10:44 a.m. at 3001 Rustic Canyon Rd. The LAFD air and ground resources are coordinating to aid an injured mountain biker (29 year-old male, fair condition) on a remote trail. Crews hoisted the patient to an LAFD helicopter and will transport directly to a local hospital.

WESTWOOD—UCLA Head Coach DeShaun Foster announced tickets for the Bruins’ season opener against Utah would be free for first responders. It was a wonderful gesture for those battling California’s current wildfires.

UCLA will kick off against a familiar foe, Utah at the iconic Rose Bowl 8:00 p.m. on Saturday August 30 in what should be a very intriguing game. Any first responders who choose to come for a great event will be welcomed with open arms.

UCLA and Utah were formerly in the PAC-12 before the conference disbanded. Utah is now a part of the Big 12, but the rivalry between the Bruins and Utes remains intact.

“August 30th, our first game this year is gonna be the first responder game,” Foster said. “The tickets will be free for all first responders, just showing (a form of) ID or anything. You can check the links there on both our social media accounts, Twitter and Instagram, please come out.”

“This is our first opportunity to really just share and let them know, the first responders, how we feel about them and how important it was for them to, you know, they basically saved us, you know, because (the fires) didn’t make it to UCLA,” said UCLA football Head Coach DeShaun Foster.

Last season, the Bruins joined the ferocious, highly competitive BIG 10 Conference. The Bruins certainly got off to a slow start, as every weekend featured a new heavyweight foe.

Their record was 5-7, although the Bruins improved leaps and bounds finishing 4-2 down the stretch to get some momentum into 2025.

Attention UCLA Football fans, meet our new Quarterback who hopefully will take the Bruins to a bowl game: Nico Lamaleava.

He is a transfer from Tennessee who is garnering headlines across the Nation. UCLA has hope and momentum going into 2025.

“He’s just somebody that I don’t think he can really get rattled, you know? Personality wise, he’s kind of quiet a little bit, but, you know, confidence,” Foster said at Big Ten Media Days.

UCLA and Utah will kick off the season in less than three weeks. A new-look Bruins team will hope to show out for the fans in attendance, including the brave first responders.

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica is warning commuters to prepare for the increase of students with Palisades Charter High School and Santa Monica High School students returning to the downtown and civic center area in the coming two weeks as the fall semester begins at both campuses.

With the influx of students, city officials advise commuters, residents, workers and business owners to allow extra time traveling near school areas, be on the lookout for students.

Pali High students will return to the school’s temporary Santa Monica campus at the site of the former Sears building on Colorado Avenue on Wednesday, August 13. Samohi students are set to return to their campus on Thursday, August 21.

Santa Monica welcomed Pali High students to the Sears site in April, after the January wildfires damaged their home campus in neighboring Pacific Palisades. The city is ready to welcome students and staff back through December 19, as they continue to prepare to return to the Palisades region.

Pali High’s temporary campus was made possible thanks to an emergency order approved by the Santa Monica City Council in January that allowed schools affected by the wildfires to relocate to Santa Monica. The school is one of four that relocated to Santa Monica and are returning for the new school year.

“Back to school can be a hectic transition for many families, and especially for our Palisades families who are still in the process of rebuilding,” said Mayor Lana Negrete. “The city remains a committed partner in helping restore a sense of normalcy as families settle into their routines for the new school year.”

The city is working with local partners to help families get to and from schools safely:

-Crossing guards will be at every Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) campus to help manage critical intersections.

-SMMUSD and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) participate in the regional GoPass program, which provides free transit rides to all K-12 students. This includes rides on Big Blue Bus and LA Metro trains and buses.

-Construction was completed earlier this year on the pedestrian improvements at six schools, which implemented critical pedestrian safety improvements around Edison Language Academy, Santa Monica Alternative Schoolhouse (SMASH), John Muir Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Grant Elementary and Franklin Elementary.

-School safety tips from the Santa Monica Police Department include information for students and parents as well as important safety tips for motorists navigating the streets around schools.

PACIFIC PALISADES—On June 5, new reports circulated of more and more insurance claims that were not honored by USAA and AAA. Residents who fell victim to the wildfires that struck California in early January have banded together in lawsuits claiming that the insurance companies “overpromised and underdelivered” leaving homeowners in debt when insurance policies did not cover unexpected costs.

Reports indicate that the affected families hired Gregory L. Bentley of the Bentley and More Legal firm who are claiming negligence and restitution on their client’s behalf.

But it’s not only USAA and AAA that are not treating their clients ethically. Reports indicate that State Farm Insurance canceled close to 70 percent of their homeowner policies following the suspension of the first scheduled debris removal leaving their clients in limbo with land that was once premium real estate was now a fire hazard and an eyesore.

As previously reported, the City of Malibu voted unanimously to hire a private security firm to further protect the burn sites from further damage from looters.

The third issue that those who fell victim of California wildfires are dealing with is insurance fraud. Insurance companies have reportedly been inundated with false claims from those who didn’t receive damage and do not deserve compensation.

Some of the Pacific Palisades homeowners have chosen to sell their land at a reduced rate rather than fight the odds on a rebuild.

There are contractors and developers dedicated to rebuilding and restoring Palisades to its former splendor. It is not clear if one of them has chosen to invest in the land from residents who chose to leave rather than rebuild.

MALIBU/TOPANGA CANYON—The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lost Hills Station revealed on Thursday, May 22, that Pacific Coast Highway is expected to reopen without restrictions on Friday, May 23 at 8 a.m.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is reinforcing its commitment to public safety in the fire-affected areas of the city of Malibu, unincorporated Malibu, and the Topanga community.

Authorities will be implementing strict traffic enforcement, conducting high visibility patrols, undercover operations, and bolstering looter suppression efforts to protect residents. The LASD comprehensive crime strategy will focus on a zero-tolerance approach to criminal activity and traffic violations and will be coordinated with the California Highway Patrol and other public safety agencies.

“Our highest priority is the safety of this community,” said Acting Captain Dustin Carr. “We are proud to reach this milestone in the Palisades Fire recovery and will continue supporting it with increased traffic enforcement, proactive looter suppression, and a close partnership with the community. There will be zero tolerance for looting and reckless driving. Please help us keep the city of Malibu, unincorporated Malibu, and our Topanga community safe as we rebuild together.”

The Malibu Lost Hills Station is asking all residents and visitors to comply with traffic regulations and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

The community can stay updated through the Malibu/Lost Hills Station social media accounts on X, Nixle, and Facebook. Refer to the Caltrans website https://dot.ca.gov/ for the latest on road conditions and closures.

The Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station noted that homeowners should visit the station and complete a Letter of Agency for their homes or businesses impacted the Palisades Fire and recent fires, especially if they are unoccupied.

A Letter of Agency, also known as a Trespass Arrest Authorization, is a formal document that grants law enforcement the authority to enforce trespassing laws on one’s property in their absence. It allows officers to take action against unauthorized individuals without contacting the homeowner first.

This authorization is useful for vacant properties, vacant lots, businesses, or any properties experiencing public nuisance activities or general trespassing. The completion of the Letter of Agency helps protect one’s property as Malibu transitions back to normal operations.

Remember to:

-Secure Your Property: Ensure gates, doors, and windows are locked.
-Report Suspicious Activity: Immediately contact local law enforcement if you observe unauthorized individuals on your property.
