Marvin looked up from his bench and stared at his visitor over the magnifying glasses he was wearing to help him tie an Adams dry on a number 20.

“Del,” he said, “some things are just meant to be quiet, you know? Just quiet. You just sit down and tie flies, and you don’t need an organization or festival, or factory.”

“Well … okay, I see your point. You working on emerger patterns right now for the spring hatch?”

“Adams, dry.”

Del looked over his shoulder as Marvin carefully wound the hackle behind the wings then in front of the wings and then tied it off with a whip finish tool.

“Shouldn’t you be tying emergers this time of year?”

Herb Collins told the coffee-drinking group about it, because his wife went to the Gates of Heaven regularly with her girlfriends.

“I’m serious, guys,” Herb said.

Steve looked at him. “Delbert wouldn’t do that.”

“He did.”

Dud looked stunned. “Sweet and sour hamburgers?”

“Yep.”

“Wouldn’t that make people sick?” Steve said, looking at Doc.

“Nothing Delbert would cook would ever make people sick,” Doc replied. “His kitchen is cleaner than a hospital surgery. But sweet and sour hamburgers doesn’t … click?”

“Lunch, today?” Steve asked.

So, the boys went to Gates of Heaven for lunch, and they all ordered the sweet and sour hamburgers. Delbert came out of the kitchen, smiling.

“You boys don’t need ketchup or mustard with these burgers,” he told them. “They’re fine just like they are. I have pickles, though … you want pickles.”

The burgers came, with a side order of those petrified noodles in place of French fries, and they eating began. Delbert watched their faces. He knew this was the Supreme Court of our valley when it came to introducing something new to eat.

There were nods and there were inquisitive facial expressions.

“Well?” asked Delbert.

“Del,” said Doc, “your cooking is always wonderful …”

There were concomitant nods around the table.

“ … but I think maybe I’ll stick to the sweet and sour pork or shrimp. Hamburgers need …”

“Ketchup?” said Steve.

“Mayo?” said Dud.

“Hey, they’re good, though,” said Doc. “I like the way the sauce gets soaked into the bun.”

“That’s right.”

“Me, too.”

“Oh, shut up,” said Delbert, heading for the kitchen.

There is a church that holds weekly Bible exams, with all of its members mastering the Book of Revelation. It is the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Chairman Lee Man-hee, hereafter Shincheonji Church of Jesus). From the moment of enrollment, members must attend the Zion Christian Mission Center, where they study elementary, middle, and high school-level courses and pass a graduation exam (about 100 questions) before becoming members. The church, which has conducted four consecutive graduation ceremonies with over 100,000 graduates, is famous worldwide.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus Chairman Lee Man-hee has been traveling across South Korea, preaching from the pulpit and frequently citing Rev 22:18-19, saying, ‘Do not add or subtract from the Book of Revelation, for those who do will not enter the kingdom of heaven.’ He emphasizes that the Book of Revelation must be recorded in one’s thoughts and heart.

In line with this, the Shincheonji Church’s General Assembly Education Department, following Chairman Lee Man-Hee’s intentions to ensure all members qualify for entrance into heaven, is currently administering the ‘Sealing Confirmation Test’ to all Shincheonji members worldwide. This test, which started online during the global difficulties caused by COVID-19, is now being conducted in person at the temples, with weekly exams to ensure that the members of Shincheonji become walking Bible.

A representative of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus stated, “The only true way to understand the true meaning and reality of the Book of Revelation is through the testimony of witnesses who saw and heard the events as they unfolded when the prophecy of Revelation was fulfilled. Today, the global Christian community has neither seen nor heard the reality of the Book of Revelation, which is why both pastors and congregants have added to or subtracted from it. Among all the Christians worldwide, except for the members of Shincheonji, there is not a single person who has not altered the Book of Revelation. Rev 22:18-19 clearly states that anyone who adds to or takes away from the Book of Revelation will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Yet, pastors and their congregations are not concerned even alter adding to or subtracting from Book of Revelation. How can this be called true faith?

He continued, “Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which is considered a cult by both the Catholic Church and Protestantism, has all its members mastering the Book of Revelation. However, both the Catholic and Protestant churches, including their pastors and congregation, have added to or subtracted from the Book of Revelation. So, I urge you to judge who is truly orthodox and who is truly a heretic based on the Bible.”

At Shincheonji Church of Jesus, all members take weekly Bible exams, which focus on the prophecies in the Four Gospels of the New Testament and the entire Book of Revelation. Shincheonji Church explains that these exams are a form of training to record God’s word in the heart and to keep the New Covenant Revelation.

According to the General Assembly Education Department of Shincheonji, the overall average score for the “‘Sealing Confirmation Test” taken by all members from January to April this year is 99, with a participation rate of 97%. Furthermore, 99.9% of the test-takers scored above 90. This statistic demonstrates the congregation’s dedication to the Word and their high level of faith awareness.

A representative of Shincheonji Church of Jesus stated, “Today, most Christians are neither aware of nor interested in the prophecies of the Four Gospels in the New Testament or the teachings of the Book of Revelation. Yet, they blindly label Shincheonji as a cult. However, when asked to explain why Shincheonji is considered a cult based on the Bible, they cannot provide an answer. This situation is similar to the one during Jesus’ First Coming.” He continued, “If the teachings of Shincheonji Church of Jesus are wrong, please provide evidence from the Bible. It is not right to persecute Shincheonji just because members from other churches follow the truth and join Shincheonji. Did Jesus teach us in the New Testament to persecute our neighbors?

Despite the ongoing controversy over Shincheonji being labeled a cult, former pastors who have joined the Shincheonji Church of Jesus unanimously testify, “The church that teaches and practices the Word according to the Bible is Shincheonji Church of Jesus.” They argue that instead of blindly condemning the church, it should be evaluated based on the Bible.

Pastor Kim, who came to recognize the teachings of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, said, “In Christianity, Shincheonji is considered a cult, but after coming here, I realized that there is no church that practices the Bible more faithfully than Shincheonji.” He continued, “Shincheonji helps its members master the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, so their knowledge of the Bible is even greater than mine as a pastor. I’ve left everything I knew before and am starting my faith anew.”

Pastor Choi Kwang-Sun also said, “I taught the Word as a pastor, but after coming to Shincheonji Church of Jesus, I realized how ignorant I was. The church community should not just defame Shincheonji but give members the opportunity to hear and make their own judgment.” He added, “It is dereliction of duty for churches not to teach the Bible properly. Christian leaders should listen to the Word so that all people on earth can know about God’s final work.”

A representative of Shincheonji Church of Jesus emphasized, “Just as a thirsty person searches for water, those seeking the truth are gathering where the truth is found. What the global community of believers should focus on now is distinguishing between truth and falsehood based on God’s Word and determining who has truly been created according to the New Testament and the Book of Revelation, and who has mastered the Book of Revelation.”

There are plenty who go to college, get to string out just a little longer that decision on what they want to actually do with their lives. I have always been a proponent that college opens the doors for you to experience and learn things that perhaps you wouldn’t know if you didn’t. Should the price of knowledge and information be so extreme to the point that it is today? No, but as much as I hate to say it, college is a business. If you can afford it, the better, if not it can be a struggle beyond struggle to achieve it at times.

With that said, I want to dive into the discussion as to WHY college is so expensive. Anyone who spent a semester in college, a year, or the entire four-five years to complete your degree can fully understand the costs that come with schooling. I’ll never forget my freshman year because the university was so adamant about me taking out loans to cover my tuition for the second half of the semester and I was adamantly against it. Why?

I had scholarship money at my fingertips, and I wanted those funds to be used. The university argued back and forth with me (in particular, the financial aid office) telling me that scholarship money couldn’t be used at my discretion. Thank God, I kept my letter with those details on the scholarship that I had earned because it revealed otherwise. It specifically noted that I could use those funds at my discretion whenever I choose. Thank God, I had that letter because it allowed me to focus my attention on my studies and not that worry about how I am going to pay for school or having to work a strenuous work schedule.

With that said, I did my absolute best to limit any loans that I took out as I focused on obtaining my degree. I had friends who were just taking out loans just for the sake of taking them out. Making the situation worse instead of using that money to pay for tuition, they were using it for shopping sprees and spring break travel. That was quite worrisome to say the least.

I was a struggling college student and for me achieving my degree meant a ton for me because I knew it was an opportunity to have a chance of furthering my goals of a successful career. However, as a liberal arts major it was no guarantee that I would have a job waiting for me upon graduation. I had earned an internship; it was an unpaid one at that. That ultimately turned into actual employment with a successful company, but that doesn’t happen to everyone.

I had plenty of pals who spent easily $40,000 to $50,000 for their college education and didn’t find a job for nearly a year after being out of school. They were taking part-time sales gigs in retail to keep afloat until they could find something.

It is just so bothersome that as a taxpayer, I can’t go to a public university that gets a portion of my tax dollars to operate because I applied, I didn’t get in. This notion of taking the ACT or SAT to determine one’s ‘ability’ to excel at the collegiate level is just stupid. A test is a test, it doesn’t predict success. And people can try to make that argument about diversity BS all they want, I’m not buying it, because yes, you do need more diversity at public universities across the country and when your university is not showing that, questions must be raised whether you want to believe it or not.

With that said, I had pals that got exceptional scores on the ACT and SAT exams, but didn’t last a semester or year in college. So that exam that gained them entry into the university didn’t prove anything when it came to success. The education system needs to be a bit savvier to find a way to not only make education fun, but ensure students are learning things of importance. You shouldn’t be taking classes just for the sake of taking them because the university or school deems them to be ‘important’ to making a well-rounded student.

Yeah, there were a lot of those classes during my first two years as an undergraduate. Like I’m paying thousands of dollars for these classes, and a lot of this knowledge is never going to be used my many people. I’d rather spend my money if I have to spend it, only classes in my profession obtaining knowledge that matters to me and will help me in my daily life. Of course, math and reading are vital, and there are a lot of students who don’t have those basic skills. Why? Might be more focused on advanced literature and advanced math that many people don’t use daily.

Let’s not just make money to make it in the educational system, let’s ensure it benefits the student because at the end of the day, isn’t that the goal of education? Perhaps some actual institutions need to think about that.

Jesus Ayala, 18, and Jzamir Keys, 16, appeared in court facing charges of mowing down a former police chief, Andreas Probst, videotaping while laughing, in what some call a hate crime.

On August 14, 2023, retired police chief, Andreas Probst was on a routine bike ride, when he was intentionally mowed down and killed by a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Jesus Ayala.

Ayala and his friend, Jzamir Keys videotaped the crime where you can hear both laughing and cheering as they killed Probst and left the scene.

Probst’s family received an alert from the victim’s iPhone that there was a fall and suspected something was wrong. They discovered he was killed while out on a bike ride.

Earlier in the day, Jzamir Keys ran over a 72-year-old bicyclist, who survived with a knee injury. Ayala was in the passenger seat and filmed the crime.

Keys is Black, while Ayala is Hispanic, and both showed support for BLM and anti-police. They specifically targeted white men to mow down “for fun.” At this time, authorities are not pursuing a hate crime, but there are 18 pending charges.

Police arrested Ayala who taunted the officers saying he will be out in 30 days, before telling him they should buy him some food.

On October 25, Ayala and the passenger of his car, who was cheering him on before, during and after they hit and killed Probst, appeared in court.

Probst retired after a long career in law enforcement. He was a decorated veteran. He was 64 years of age.

A trial date has been set for September 16, 2024. The maximum sentence the teens can receive if convicted is 20 years to life in state prison because they were considered to be minors at the time of the crime. They cannot receive the death penalty. Ayala, the driver who ran over Probst was one month shy of his 18th birthday. Ayala and Keys are both being charged as adults.

Card, 40, a trained firearms instructor is wanted for the mass shooting. He was last seen driving a white 2013 Subaru Outback.

Three locations were targeted in Lewiston, Maine, at Sparetime Recreation, Schemengees Bar & Grille and a bowling alley.

Card has a previous arrest record for child pornography and is a registered sex offender. Possessing a firearm is prohibited.

This is an active situation, and the suspect is still at large. Authorities warn to not approach the individual as he is armed and dangerous.

It has been roughly three months since her death and De Laurentiis’ luxury Beverly Hills home is officially on the market for $37.5 million. De Laurentiis’ and her producer husband, Dino De Laurentiis, who passed away in 2010, resided in the home for 35 years.

This parade follows West Hollywood’s split from LA Pride in July 2020. At the time, Christopher Street West, the non-profit that organized LA Pride for more than 30 years, told the West Hollywood City Council that they intended to move the parade outside of the city.

WeHo Pride will feature OUTLOUD: Raising Voices, which is a three-day LGBTQ concert series. Headliners, artist lineup, and ticket information has yet to be disclosed.

The city launched forms for applicants that want to participate in WeHo Pride. Participants can apply by: either activating a designated space in the event area for WeHo Pride Weekend or request city funding for a unique event, produced entirely by a community group. Applications will be reviewed by the city and a limited number of approved groups will be chosen as participants.

Athletes from all 50 states and 67 countries will participate in the event. The runners will run through the streets of Beverly Hills for miles 16 and 17 before ending at the Avenue of the Stars in Century City. 

Proceeds from the race will go towards the McCourt Foundation, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of patients and families affected by health challenges within the neurology community.

“We are thrilled to welcome the athletes of the 37th annual LA Marathon back to Beverly Hills,” said Beverly Hills Mayor Bob Wunderlich, “We hope that our iconic City inspires and brings an extra boost of energy to runners as they enter the final third of the race.”

There will be road closures and parking restrictions on March 20 and the closures will be in effect from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. The roads that will be closed include:

There will be a detour in effect on the western border of Beverly Hills, at Wilshire Boulevard and North Santa Monica Boulevard, as well as at Moreno Drive and South Santa Monica Boulevard until 5 p.m. Access to all local businesses will be maintained. The Beverly Hills Police Department and message boards will direct vehicles around the marathon route. Wider regional closures for the route will be in effect from as early as 3 a.m. until 5 p.m.

On October 3 2018, now 21-year-old Jesse Ramirez Perez, stabbed 18-year-old Eric Micheal Perrine while he was sleeping on a park bench. Perrine suffered a single stab wound to his abdomen. The stabbing was said to be unprovoked, and Perrine died on his way to the hospital.

Perez was caught running from the crime scene and was arrested by responding officers. Perez was booked on one count of murder and one count assault with a deadly weapon.

In a ruling last December that upheld Ramirez-Perez’s conviction, a three-justice panel from California’s 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense’s contention that the trial court erred in admitting evidence of a prior assault by the defendant and by failing to instruct jurors on self-defense and the lesser crime of voluntary manslaughter.

According to the ruling, jurors heard evidence that Ramirez-Perez had struck another homeless man in the face with a two-foot length piece of rebar while the victim was sleeping earlier that year, but the jury did not hear that he was convicted of felony assault by means likely to inflict great bodily injury for that attack. 

The appellate court justices noted that, “Both attacks occurred in parks, against homeless individuals, and within approximately six months of one another. In each instance, the defendant used a weapon to inflict a single wound to the victim and then fled. Although the wounds were to different parts of the victims’ bodies (a solid steel bar strike to the head and a knife stab to the chest), each support an inference that the defendant acted deliberately, with conscious disregard for the danger to the lives of both victims.” 

The panel found that the full court record “permits no reasonable conclusion that defendants acted in self-defense pursuant to a fight or struggle,” noting that he had committed an, “unprovoked assault against a similar victim in a similar location.” Ramierz-Perez is serving a 15-year-to-life prison sentence.

Clarence and Jacqueline’s Beverly Hills home was robbed on December 1. During the robbery, Jaqueline was shot, and later pronounced deceased. A security guard was also shot at during the robbery.

Maynor was arrested on December 2, after police identified him by watching security tapes and after he shot himself while attempting to burglarize a home in Hollywood Hills. Paramedics treated Maynor who was placed under arrest by the Los Angeles Police Department. 

He pled guilty to one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, and two counts of first-degree residential burglary. 

At the time of Maynor’s arrest, Chief Mark G. Stainbrook stated:

“To the Beverly Hills Community, let me reassure you, this is one of the most protected and patrolled cities in the world. Crime of any kind will not be tolerated here. Let this be a message to anyone thinking of committing a crime in Beverly Hills – you will be caught and brought to justice.” 

Maynor faces a maximum sentence of 170 years in prison and will be ineligible for parole.

Jacqueline Avant was a philanthropist, mother, and model in the Ebony Fashion Fair, and married Clarence Avant in 1967.

When asked about the situation, Chief Mark G. Stainbrook stated:

“We are pleased to see Maynor will remain behind bars where he belongs. Our thoughts continue to be with the Avant family.” 

Maynor’s sentencing is set for March 30, and the investigation will remain open with the Beverly Hills Police Department until the suspect is sentenced.

The camps are offered from April 4 to April 14 during the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s spring break.

There are a range of Sports Camps including skateboarding, soccer, surfing and tennis, and Enrichment Day Camps, including art adventures and rocket science. The Day Camps are said to be fun, educational, and an inviting environment. Registration is open here.

Community members can sign up for #PlayLikeAGirlMalibu Girls Sports Clinics, offered for female students in grades 6th to 8th.

These clinics are free and will be held in March, April, and May at Malibu Bluffs Park. Individuals interested in attending the clinics must pre-register in advance. 

The Girls Sports Clinics will include lacrosse with the Women’s Pepperdine Lacrosse Team, volleyball with Sunshine Volleyball Club, and skateboarding with Champ Camp. Experienced coaches will bring together beginner and seasoned athletes for a morning of learning skills and sportsmanship through guided drills in a non-competitive environment. 

The Volleyball clinic will take place on March 20, the lacrosse clinic will take place on April 24, and the skateboarding clinic will be on May 22. The lacrosse and volleyball clinics are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the skateboarding clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

On February 26, a 2009 Hyundai Genesis was struck head on by a 2021 BMW M5. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near the intersections of Piuma Road and Mesa Peak Motorway. 

A total of five people were hurt on scene and Scripter was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the BMW, 21, was driving at a “high rate of speed” and was injured on scene as well.

According to Instagram posts, Skylar was a fun-loving girl who lit up any room she walked into and was loved by many.

The Soundgarden vocalist resided in the home with his wife Vickey Karayiannis and the pair lived there from 2005 to 2013. Cornell passed away after hanging himself following a show in Detroit. His bodyguard, Martin Kirstin, found him inside a suite at the MGM Grand Resort and Casino.

Cornel and Karayiannis initially purchased the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home for $4.22 million. The home was previously owned by Belgian pop singer Christine Snider-Decroix, before her move to Miami.

The estate spans over 5,800 square feet and is hidden behind a private gate. The home is newly renovated with 20-foot ceilings and handmade Italian chandeliers. There is a formal dining room with an open-concept plane and a minimalist kitchen with sleek white finishes.

The home has large glass windows that look out onto the spacious backyard and infinity pool. A leisure lounge area is set up beside the spacious pool. It is also equipped with two dishwashers, a wine fridge, and an espresso machine. A media room, workplace, leisure bar, and health club also reside inside the home.

Due to the many palm trees surrounding this estate, it has been dubbed a “pristine paradise.”

Marquise Gordon, 41, was sentenced to federal prison on Monday, February 28. He received 5 years for his role in the robbery that was carried out at the high-class Italian restaurant.

In early February, 21-year-old Malik Lamont Powell and 18-year-old Khai McGhee were sentenced to 12 years in prison for the robbery. All three men are members of the Rollin 30s Crips gang.

The robbery took place in broad daylight. They chose jeweler, Shay Belhassan because of the $500,000 watch he was wearing. The men held Belhassan at gunpoint, demanding he hand over the Richard Mille watch.

Belhassan wrestled with the suspects, and was able to hit the gun to the ground. According to an FBI affidavit, one of the robbers then picked up the gun and fired it twice in different directions, hitting a bystander in the leg.

They were able to arrest Powell because they connected his black BMW, which was the getaway car, to the robbery. Powell also discussed the stolen watch in many messages over social media. A bloodstain on Belhassan’s shirt was connected to McGhee’s DNA, and security footage showed Gordon hopping into the getaway car.

There are two other suspects connected to the robbery that have yet to be caught.

Richard’s daughter, Brooke Wiederhorn, and her husband Thayer, whose father is the CEO of the Fatburger franchise, are being investigated by the federal government. The family is being investigated for money laundering.

Andrew Wiederhorn, Thayer’s father, is also being looked at by the Feds for wire fraud, money laundering, and attempted tax evasion.

In December 2021, the feds raided Brooke and Thayer’s home. The agents left with phones, digital storage devices, tax documents, and other records from the home.

The agents also reportedly asked a judge for permission to raid Andrew’s home, but it is unclear if they have been given permission to do so. Andrew is accused of routing company money through his son’s Paypal account to generate fraudulent American Express rewards points.

No criminal charges have been filed. Andrew’s lawyer has denied the fraud accusations stating, “Mr. Wiederhorn categorically denies these allegations and at the appropriate time we will demonstrate that the government has its facts wrong. These loans were completely legitimate and were independently reviewed and approved. In addition, Mr. Wiederhorn’s tax returns were prepared and approved by independent tax professionals and he has been making payments under a plan approved by the IRS.”

Kim has yet to comment on her daughter’s home being raided by the feds, and there is no more to add to this story at this time.

The apartment complex is located in the area of Hacienda Place and Fountain Avenue, just a few blocks away from Sunset Boulevard. The break began at 1 a.m. and crews were able to shut off service about two hours later.

A resident of the complex, Chris Drago, told NBC News in an interview that he was able to take footage of the flood on his cellphone. The footage shows muddy water covering the garage and alarms going off in the background. The water rushed downhill and into the parking garage.

Drago stated that he tried to keep water out of the garage by placing trashcans as barriers, but the water continued into the garage and got as high as 4 inches deep.

Now crews are working on repairing the water main, causing many surrounding neighborhoods to be blocked off. There is not a set date of when this area will be restored.

The chase started in the Mar Vista area before traveling into Brentwood. The vehicle was originally stolen from San Diego County.

The driver continued northbound along the 405 Freeway into the San Fernando Valley, reaching speeds as high as 80 mph. Officers tried to deploy spike strips, but the party bus dodged the spikes.

From the 5 Freeway, the driver got on the 14 towards Antelope Valley and exited the freeway in Palmdale on Sierra Highway. The chase ended after with the party bus rear-ending a four-door vehicle on Sierra Highway.

The female driver was arrested by authorities. Her name and details surrounding the theft have not been disclosed to the public.
