BEVERLY HILLS—Supermodel Cindy Crawford, 54, and her husband Rande Gerber, 58, have put their Beverly Hills home on the market.

The couple purchased the property for $11.625 million in 2017 and are selling it for $15.995 million.

The 5,386-square-foot house is five-bedrooms with five-and-a-half-bathrooms. It was built in 1959, but has been renovated with many customary amenities. Some include a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, a bar, a screening room, a resort-style backyard, a barbecue station, a swimming pool, and a spa. The kitchen has its own marble island and stainless steel appliances.

“Malibu’s great when [the kids are] little, but they’re starting to be like, ‘It’s so boring here, we wanna be in town.’ So we got that house,” Crawford told Architectural Digest when she bought the home.

Crawford and Gerber have two kids together: Presley, 21, and Kaia, 18. Kaia is a model just like her mother. Cindy also has a home in Malibu where the family primarily resides.

She is not the only recognizable name who has lived in the historic house. New Republic front-man Ryan Tedder and producer Gregory Goodman previously lived at the property.

LOS ANGELES—On Wednesday, August 26, Los Angeles County announced the launch of the “L.A. vs Hate” initiative which has the mission of ending hate crimes in the county.

The County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, the LA County Department of Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services (WDACS), and the Commission on Human Relations all partnered together for the creation of this initiative.

The announcement came after 211-LA received a total of 256 calls regarding hate crimes between January and July 2020.

“In Los Angeles County, there is no place for hate. Now more than ever, we must all work together to combat the pandemic and take care of one another. The alarming spike in hate incidents in our County, particularly aimed at our Asian Pacific Islander communities and communities of color, requires a robust and creative response. That’s why I am proud of the LA vs Hate campaign’s innovation for partnering with local artists and organizations like Las Fotos Project to perform art interventions and produce marketing materials which aim to combat hate,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis.

There are three components to the “L.A. vs Hate” campaign. The first is a marketing campaign that brings awareness to the dangers of hate and the importance of reporting hate. The second reflects on bias motivating bullying and the importance of calling 211-LA. The third provides a network of agencies to provide assistance and prevention strategies to hate.

“The L.A. vs Hate initiative is just one of the many strategies the County has embarked upon to dismantle racism and bias in our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and community gathering places,” said Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas. “This work preceded recently elevated demands for racial justice and aligns with the County’s current efforts to establish an antiracist policy agenda. The L.A. vs Hate initiative provides every Angeleno with tangible actions to undertake if they witness or are victimized by a hate crime or bias-motivated incident.”

Calls to 211-LA can be reported anonymously. Eighty-seven percent of residents who call 211-LA to report hate also request follow up services, and this is available for all callers.

UNITED STATES—All NBA playoff games that were going to take place on Wednesday, August 26 were postponed as a result of players boycotting against racial injustice.

The decision to postpone the games started when the Milwaukee Bucks decided to boycott their playoff game after the shooting of Jacob Blake in the team’s home state of Wisconsin.

The NBA posted the following statement on Twitter: “The NBA and the NBPA today announced that in light of the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to not take the floor today for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic, today’s three games – MIL-ORL, HOU-OKC and LAL-POR have been postponed. Game 5 of each series will be rescheduled.”

New dates for these games are unknown, and no announcement has been made on the postponement of Thursday games.

“Some things are bigger than basketball,” Bucks senior vice president Alex Lasry tweeted. “The stand taken today by the players and (the organization) shows that we’re fed up. Enough is enough. Change needs to happen. I’m incredibly proud of our guys and we stand 100% behind our players ready to assist and bring about real change.”

Blake was shot in the back in Kenosha, Wisconsin as he tried to enter his vehicle. The incident has sparked protests and riots across the country.

President Obama tweeted about the NBA’s decision to postpone their games, writing “I commend the players on the @Bucks for standing up for what they believe in, coaches like @DocRivers, and the @NBA and @WNBA for setting an example. It’s going to take all our institutions to stand up for our values.”

Major League Baseball postponed their games that were scheduled for August 26, including the Cincinnati Reds versus the Milwaukee Brewers, the Seattle Mariners versus the San Diego Padres, and the Los Angeles Dodgers versus the San Francisco Giants.

SANTA MONICA— On August 25, Santa Monica’s Interim City Manager and Director of Emergency Services Lane Dilg issued a twenty-fourth supplement regarding the coronavirus.

This new supplement extends Santa Monica’s local emergency declaration and all associated orders to September 30 and formally prohibits large gatherings.

Now, individuals will be held responsible for holding large gatherings of 20 people or more. Violations are punishable as a misdemeanor or by administrative citation. The supplement also allows the City to turn off water service at locations where this rule isn’t being followed.

Administrative penalties are set at $500 for a first violation, $750 for a second violation, and $1,000 for a third violation committed within one year. Property owners, tenants, landlords, managers of properties, and party organizers all count as the “responsible persons” for having large gatherings.

The eviction moratorium for commercial tenant 1s will also be extended until September 30.

“We are making progress toward recovery following the mid-July surge in COVID-19 cases. Recovery depends on all of us remaining vigilant, especially as we approach a holiday weekend when it can be tempting to gather,” said Interim City Manager Lane Dilg. “Return to school and to our civic life requires each of us to make smart choices every day. Private events that violate public health rules designed to put us back on track will be subject to fines and other enforcement action in Santa Monica.”

There is also still a fine of $100 for not wearing a face covering in public areas.

The City of Santa Monica has recorded 744 total COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

AMERICA— A riot was declared and multiple arrests were made after multiple arson fires were set at the Portland Police Association (PPA) building in North Portland.

At around 9:30 p.m., around 300 people marched to the Portland Police Association Building in the 1800 block of North Lombard Street chanting many things including “burn it down.” Some people also wore helmets, gas masks, body armor, and carried shields.

Minutes after the crowd arrived, flames were seen from the side of the building and power inside the building went out. The dry weather also made the fire worse.

The arson fire that prompted the riot declaration.

Warnings were directed at the crowd.

At 11:30 p.m., two more fires were lit on the north side of the building. A crowd also began to surround officers and hit them with umbrellas and other objects. Officers began to arrest people.

There were many people with the words “press” printing on their clothing, and these people were seen throwing rocks at officers. One rock cracked the glass of a police car.

Chain link fences and other blockades were also used to close the streets. Portland Police deployed CS (tear) gas and used other crowd control munitions. Most of the rioters had dispersed by around 1:00 a.m.

Twenty-five people were arrested.

Because 30 patrol officers were pulled from the precincts, responses to calls for service were limited. In total, over 100 calls were on hold, which included a priority disturbance, a priority assault, a priority burglary to an occupied apartment, welfare checks, threats, and roadway hazards.

LAUREL CANYON— Metro has been considering making changes to the bus route around the Laurel Canyon area again.

The Laurel Canyon Association was previously concerned that line #218, which travels from Studio City to Beverly Hills, would be eliminated. Many community members use this line to get to school or go to work in the Laurel Canyon area. Because of this, Councilmember Ryu wrote a letter to the Chief Executive Officer at LA Metro expressing these concerns, and line #218 was saved.

The new proposed NextGen Bus Plan states that line #218 will run less frequently. Whereas the bus used to run every 30 min or so, the new plan states that the bus will run every hour.

Proposed change to the Metro line.

If approved, this change will become effective December 2020 or later.

Concerned community members can submit a comment for their voices to be heard by participating in virtual public hearings.

There will be a Westside/Central Service Council Public Hearing on August 26 at 6:00 p.m. and a Gateway Cities Service Council Public Hearing on August 27 at 6:00 p.m. Click on the links to be directed to a website where comments can be submitted.

Comments can also be submitted by emailing jacksonm@metro.net or through post office mail to: Board Secretary’s Office, One Gateway Plaza, MS: 99-3-1, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Emails and postal mail should include the meeting name, meeting date, agenda number or item (this is item #4), and the comment.

Comments can be submitted until the beginning of the meeting.

UNITED STATES—On Saturday, August 22, another riot was declared in Portland due to life safety danger.

At 9:15 p.m., a large gathering of around 250 people collected around Normandale Park. Some people wore all black clothing, helmets, armor, gas masks, and carried hardened shields. It was evident that the crowd intended to march to the Penumbra Kelly Building because that location has been the target of several riots in recent months.

Large gathering in Portland.

The Portland Police Department attempted to prevent the march to the Penumbra Kelly Building. As officers gathered on the Northeast 47th Avenue overpass, four vehicles approached officers and refused to move. Since officers had to set up their line in front of the cars, a sergeant deflated two tires on one of the vehicles. The other vehicles left.

The Portland Police Bureau sound truck announced to people marching that the overpass was closed and that they should travel east.

Individuals in the crowd began to throw rocks, eggs, and glass bottles at officers. At least one person also targeted the Portland Police Air Support Unit airplane with a green laser, which could have caused permanent eye damage for the pilot in addition to disorientation. The crowd soon dispersed.

Another gathering developed at 10:45 p.m. at the Kelly Building blocking vehicular traffic.

Paint balloons, green lasers, eggs, rocks, bottles, and other hard objects were thrown at officers. Someone also brought a mock guillotine with a stuffed bear into the street, and burned the bear and multiple U.S. flags.

One lieutenant was hit in back of head with a glass bottle, but his helmet saved him from any significant injuries. A Portland Fire and Rescue Medic was also hit in the shin with a large rock and suffered a minor laceration to the leg.

Rock that was thrown at the Portland Fire and Rescue Medic.

At 11:59 p.m., the gathering was declared a riot, and after several warnings, officers began making arrests at around 12:35a.m.

Fourteen arrests were made and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.

During this event, there were 120 and 140 calls in Portland, including shots fired, assaults, alarms, threats, and suspicious circumstances.

SANTA MONICA— On August 19, the City of Santa Monica announced the launch of its new program, “Santa Monica Shines.” This program provides resources that businesses can take advantage of to accommodate changes that COVID-19 has led to.

“The program shares best practices on what to do in sensitive situations to help Santa Monica shine during this difficult period,” the City of Santa Monica’s announcement said.

This program will be free for Santa Monica businesses including office, retail, food and beverage service, hotel sectors, and more.

To take the Santa Monica Shines Pledge, businesses need to take an online course that’s available at ArrowUpSantamonica.com. The pledge will include a COVID-19 safety practice course and a sensitivity course, and businesses will need to agree to implement all required safety measures. The information will be available in English and Spanish.

Once the course is completed, business can sign up to receive the Santa Monica Shines Safety Assurance Seal to publicly display. To do this, businesses have to schedule an online or onsite walk through with Sustainable Works to verify compliance with program protocols and safety guidelines.

“We are open for business. It is safe to shop in Santa Monica, and we hope this assurance program reinforces this to Santa Monica residents and visitors. Buying local makes a huge difference in our community, helping to generate much-needed revenue to support our schools, parks and essential City services. Our local businesses need our support now more than ever. Buy local, stay safe and make a difference,” said Jennifer Taylor, City of Santa Monica’s Economic Development Manager.

This program has been funded by the City of Santa Monica’s Economic Recovery Task Force with match funding support provided by Santa Monica College.

“We are proud to partner with Santa Monica College, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism, Arrow Up, and Sustainable Works to launch this free resource that supports local employees and businesses with implementing County Public Health protocols,” said Anuj Gupta, Deputy City Manager and co-chair of Economic Recovery Task Force. “We know that it is a challenging time for our entire community, and we hope this resource will ensure employees across Santa Monica are prepared while reassuring customers that we are committed to remaining a safe place to shop, dine, and play.”

AMERICA— On Wednesday night, August 19, a riot was declared at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building on the 4300 block of South Macadam Avenue in Portland.

When the large gathering of a couple hundred people reached the ICE building at around 9:28 p.m., members of the crowd shined lights and lasers at Federal officers who were inside of the building. They also spray painted graffiti outside the building and began kicking and banging on doors.

Several people in the crowd wore helmets and gas masks and carried shields.

Announcements were made declaring the gathering as an unlawful assembly and ordering the crowd to disperse to the north.

Portland Police tweeted “To those near SW Bancroft St and SW Bond Ave at the ICE Building: The gathering has been declared an unlawful assembly. All persons near SW Bancroft St and SW Bond Ave must disperse by traveling to the NORTH.  You are ordered to disperse immediately.”

When Portland Police officers began dispersing the crowd, individuals threw glass bottles, rocks, full cans of soda, and a hammer at them. In their report, the Portland Police compared the size of the rocks thrown at the to the size of softballs. Because of the danger this put officers in, the gathering was declared a riot.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the definition of a riot is when “ six or more persons engage in tumultuous and violent conduct and thereby intentionally or recklessly creating a grave risk of causing public alarm, excluding persons who are engaged in passive resistance.”

At around 11:30 p.m., a mattress was set on fire at the intersection of South Gaines Street and South Bond Avenue. As the fire grew, group members blocked the intersection and chanted loudly.

The group then marched back to the ICE building and began breaking the building’s windows. Crowd control munitions and CS gas were used during dispersals. Most of the crowd was dispersed by 1:30 a.m.

Two people were arrested at the event. Joshua Buckley, 30, Mark Putman, 25, were both arrested for Interfering with a Peace Officer and Disorderly Conduct II.

Officers experienced minor injuries.

This is one of nightly demonstrations that have taken place in Portland since Friday, May 29.

PORTLAND, OR—On August 16, rioters in Portland dragged Adam Haner out of his car and beat him until he was unconscious after Haner reportedly defended a transgender female who had her possessions stolen in the area.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Southwest Taylor Street and Broadway and was reported to the Portland Police at 10:27 p.m. Calls said that “protestors chased a white Ford 4×4, which has crashed,” “protestors drug him out of car,” and 9-10 people were “beating the guy.”

Independent journalists identified the rioters who beat Haner as Antifa and Black Lives Matter activists.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Journalist Drew Hernandez captured video footage of moments before during, and after the victim was beat, which can be viewed respectively at https://twitter.com/livesmattershow/status/1295253759291879424, https://twitter.com/livesmattershow/status/1295283582747865089, and https://twitter.com/livesmattershow/status/1295233180899790850.

The attackers can be seen beating Haner until he fell to the floor with his head bleeding.

“I denounce all violence, including the assaults that were filmed and posted to social media last night.  The work this community and others nationally are doing towards criminal justice reform and racial justice are in an effort to make our communities safer.  Assaults like these make our community less safe,” said Mayor Ted Wheeler in a statement.

Investigators have identified 25 year-old Marquise Love as a suspect in the assault. They left messages for Love to turn himself in, and continue to search for him. Haner has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

Haner’s brother, Brian Haner, created a GoFundMe page in which he wrote:

“Hoping this money will help Adam get things together for his life after the attack he suffered. I know he will need repairs, or to replace the truck that was wrecked. He is going to need time to recover from his injuries as well. Plus replace things that where stolen from his pick-up that night.”

He also provided an update on his brother’s condition, writing “Adam is still feeling very ill. He is still very dazed. He doesn’t remember everything that has happened. He thought his truck only had a dent in it.”

“The Portland Police Bureau is taking this assault and other incidents of violence extremely seriously,” said Chief Lovell. “Our Detectives continue to investigate this assault as well as other acts of violence directed toward protestors, but we need more than just videos from social media. In order to hold individuals responsible for criminal acts, we need the public to provide information and refrain from tampering with evidence.”

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham called for the U.S. Department of Justice to prosecute the group of people who beat Haner on August 16.

“This shocking attack by a mob against a young man in the streets of Portland is beyond the pale,” Graham said in a statement.

The identity of the transgender female is still unknown, but the police want this person’s contact information. Anyone with information about this incident should call Detective Brent Christensen at 503-823-2087 or email Brent.Christensen@portlandoregon.gov.

PORTLAND, OR—On Saturday, August 15, the police declared a riot in Portland and 11 people were arrested.

A large gathering of hundreds of people gathered around the Penumbra Kelly Building in the 4700 block of East Burnside Street, blocking all lanes of East Burnside Street from Northeast 47th Avenue to Northeast 50th Avenue.

The Portland Police Department gave warning against committing criminal activity, and the crowd continued to block the street.

At 11:17 p.m., authorities reported that members of the crowd launched mortars at the police, shined green light at them, and threw other objects at them including large river rocks, frozen eggs, glass bottles, and frozen water bottles.

Some crowds also chanted “kill a cop, save a life,” “What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now! If we don’t get it, burn it down!”

The Portland Police Department tweeted: “People are continually throwing softball size rocks, glass bottles and other objects at police. People have spray painted over security cameras and committed other acts of vandalism. People are trespassing on the property.”

The crowd remained violent until around 1:45 a.m., when there were only around 75-100 people still there. For an hour, a group stood around a fire and ignited a dumpster.

Two police officers were injured and taken to the hospital because of rocks thrown at them. While the police department was occupied with the riot, over 60 police service calls were on hold around the city. Call types ranged from theft, vandalism, suspicious activity, hazards, hit and run, burglary, violation of restraining order, alarms, stolen cars, harassment and many others.

WEST HOLLYWOOD—During the West Hollywood City Council meeting on Monday, August 17, members will discuss an ordinance to increase their wages as city councilmembers.

Council members are payed $1,237 per month, and are discussing an increase to $1,422 per month. This change would lead to a new annual base salary of $17,064 per year per council member.

Members also receive $250 a month for telephone, internet, office, and transportation expenses. With that addition, the annual compensation for each city councilmember is $20,064.

If approved, the increase in compensation would become effective after the November 2020 election.

California law allows the compensation of the City Council to be adjusted based on the City’s population. It can be adjusted up to 5 percent each calendar year. The last time the compensation of the West Hollywood City Council was adjusted was in December 2015.

Community members can watch Monday’s City Council meeting online at www.weho.org/wehotv.

To participate by providing a public comment by telephone, email City Clerk Yvonne Quarker at yquarker@weho.org no later than 4 p.m. on August 17, including a name, the phone number that will be used to make a comment, and which Agenda Item the comment will be on (this topic is Item 6).

LAUREL CANYON—Phase 1 of the Emergency Storm Drain Repair on the Hollywood Hills Road Project will begin on Monday, August 17 and last until Friday, September 4. It will be located at the intersection of Sunset Crest Drive and Hollywood Hills Road.

During the first phase of construction, workers will be working on the demolition and removal of existing asphalt pavement, laying base to recompact the impacted surface, grading existing material, laying temporary asphalt, removing temporary asphalt, and laying a 6” cap pavement.

From August 17 to September 2, construction hours will last from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. With the construction, community members and drivers should expect 30-40 minutes of traffic delays and temporary lane closures on Hollywood Hills Road, Wonderland Park Avenue, Skyline Drive, and Sunset Crest Drive. To lessen traffic, there will be also a vehicles only window from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

On September 3 and September 4, the final asphalt will be poured and set to cure. Construction hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and up to 1 hour of traffic delays can be expected. Large delivery trucks will not be allowed access, and the 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. open window may also not be available.

The project requests that people refrain from walking in or around the worksite during work hours.  Phase 2 of the project, titled “Final Concrete Pavement” will begin on September 8 and last until October 2.

Questions about the project can be directed to Laureen.Abustan@lacity.org and Allison.Arnold@lacity.org.

NEW YORK— The White House confirmed on August 14 that Donald Trump’s younger brother, Robert Trump, had been hospitalized in New York.

The specific cause of Robert Trump’s illness has not been released, but the president told reporters on Friday that “he’s having a hard time.”

“I have a wonderful brother. We have a great relationship for a long time, from day one, so long time ago. And he’s in the hospital right now,” Trump responded when asked about his brother’s hospitalization.

The President is expected to travel to New York to visit his brother.

A senior administration official said Friday that the President “has a very good relationship with his brother and his brother is very special to him.”

Robert Trump was previously hospitalized in June for more than a week in the intensive care unit at Mount Sinai hospital.

He is one of four other siblings to the president.

He was most recently in the news because he filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Trump family to block the publication of a tell-all book by the president’s niece, Mary, titled “Too Much and Never Enough.”

The suit stated that her book was in violation of a nondisclosure agreement Mary signed years earlier.

At the time, Robert Trump said he was “so proud of my wonderful brother, the president,” and disappointed in his niece.

ISRAEL— On Thursday, August 13, President Trump announced that Israel and the United Arib Emirates had reached a “Historic Peace Agreement” that would lead to a “full normalization of relations.”

In addition to normalizing relations between the two regions, the treaty states that Israel would suspend its plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank. The joint statement released by the U.S., Israel, and the UAE declares that this was “at the request of President Trump.”

“This deal is a significant step towards building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous Middle East,” President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Now that the ice has been broken, I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates’ lead.”

The treaty was agreed on as President Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Any Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arib Emirates spoke to “advance peace in the Middle East region” according to the statement.

The statement also proclaims that this deal will lead to similar agreements regarding investment, tourism, security, technology, healthcare, and the environment by opening embassies, introducing trade ambassadors, and allowing direct passenger flights for the first time.

This Vision for Peace also allows all peaceful Muslims to visit and pray at the Al Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem’s other holy sites.

This is the third Israeli-Arab peace treaty in the Middle East, and the first to involve a Gulf state.

“We are already discussing this with other nations,” Trump said. “So, you will probably see others of these.”

Israel’s ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer tweeted about the treaty, commenting “A great day for peace! Israel commends the courage of MBZ for the historic decision of the UAE to join Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994) in making peace with Israel. Israel deeply appreciates all @POTUS Trump has done to make this breakthrough possible. More to come!”
