ADU DHABI—On Saturday, January 23, the UFC 257 main card event between Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier vs. Connor McGregor, ended with Poirier victorious in a technical knock-out at the 2:32 mark of round 2. The fight took place on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

McGregor started the first round strong focusing on landing strikes with his left hand then surprised Poirier with a right hook which snapped Poirier’s head back. McGregor was taken to the floor, but was able to retrieve his stance back on his feet at ease.

As the two lightweight contenders fought in clinch, McGregor connected with multiple shoulder strikes. Poirier lost the first round, but crucial hard leg kicks were made to McGregor’s calf.

During the second round, McGregor landed multiple hard combos and began to catch Poirier’s calf kick, in exchange for punches. During the same round, Poirier landed a hard kick to McGregor’s right calf, visibly causing an issue for the ex-retired lightweight.

It was not until Poirier backed McGregor against the cage gate where he rocked McGregor with a series of hard combinations.

Near the end of the second round, the referee called the fight a technical knock-out after  Poirier dropped McGregor with a right hand.

“The game plan was to kick, wrestle and box,” Poirier said. “[Coach] Mike Brown was big on me throwing calf kicks in this fight, and it worked.”

Poirier out landed McGregor 48-29 in significant strikes, with 18 of those being leg strikes, per UFC Stats.

“It’s hard to take. The highest highs and the lowest lows in this game,” McGregor said at his post fight news conference. “My leg is completely dead. Even though I felt like I was checking them, it was just sinking into the muscle at the front of the leg and it was badly compromised.”

Poirier is currently tied for most UFC lightweight division knockouts with seven.

The first time these two  met was in the 2014 during the featherweight division. McGregor took the victory over Poirier by knock out.

WESTWOOD—On Thursday, January 21, Fitness International LLC filed a lawsuit against WW Westwood LP. The parent company of L.A. Fitness is suing the property owner for the gym located in Westwood.

The breach-of-contact lawsuit was filed at the Santa Monica Superior Court. Due to the pandemic, the gym has not been open since March 17, 2020. On March 19, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the Stay-At-Home-Order, which called for Californians to stay home to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Fitness International LLC is seeking at least $555,000 for damages, compensation for lost profits, attorneys’ fees and a court declaration that L.A. Fitness does not have to pay rent during the closure periods.

The gym is located at 10900 block, Wilshire Boulevard. The building lease dates back to January 1996, as stated in the lawsuit. The gym was able to re-open briefly last summer from June 12 to July 13, but has not re-opened since.

“The brief four-week period, (L.A. Fitness) has been prohibited from operating its business from the premises for nearly ten 10 months,” according to lawsuit. It states the government-mandated closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic are “unanticipated events, completely out of the control of (L.A. Fitness) and catastrophic in result.”

L.A. Fitness told its landlord that its obligation to pay rent during the closure periods were excused due to the government-mandated shutdowns, WW Westwood LP demanded full payment, according to the complaint.

MALIBU—On January 13, the City of Malibu issued a press release on the Dune Restoration Project underway to protect and restore Dune Habitat at Zuma Beach.

The Malibu Living Shoreline Project is a multi-agency partnership with the city to restore coastal dune habitat. As the project broke ground mid-December 2020 at Zuma Beach near Zuma Lagoon in Malibu, the project is projected to start breaking ground on the second site Point Dume Beach in mid-January.

The project will restore three acres worth of beach and dune habitat starting from Zuma Beach to Point Dume Beach. The overall process will provide a cost-effective and low-impact solution to increase the resiliency of the sensitive coastal dune habitats.

The project is led by The Bay Foundation in partnership with the City of Malibu, Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, California State Coastal Conservancy and LA Conservation Corps.

“Malibu is committed to protecting our delicate and environmentally important ecosystems that are part of the beautiful coastline that our community cherishes,” said Mayor Mikke Pierson. “I am proud to see this joint effort with our environmental partners get started and look forward to seeing it progress.”

The restoration will help prevent some of Malibu’s few coastal sand dunes from their current degrading state, with the removal of non-native invasive plants and replacing them with native dune plants. The process will create a natural barrier to benefit the dunes from erosion.

Some of the non-native plants that will be removed are ice plants, European sea rocket, Bermuda grass, myoporum and carnation spurge. Instead the following plants will be replaced with native sand verbena, beach evening primrose, beach saltbush and beach bur, which naturally collect sand and build up dunes.

After the planting is complete educational and recreational signage will be displayed for the public. Once the completion of both sites their will be long-term monitoring, maintenance, and adaptive management to determine the overall projects success.

MALIBU—On January 13, Plastic Oceans International announced their partnership with BlueCommunities. The global initiative will establish a collaborative partnership with local communities and organizations, that will support projects worldwide.

Plastic Oceans International is a US non-profit organization working to end plastic pollution and help sustainability within communities worldwide. Operating based of the four program areas Education, Activism, Advocacy and Science.

The start up was provided by Howden Group Holdings.

“We believe that localized efforts and relationships are the building blocks for creating socioeconomic and environmental change that benefits the entire planet,” said Julie Andersen, CEO of Plastic Oceans International. “Working locally has always been at the core of what we do, but this provides a more focused and effective way of doing so, allowing for a broader impact of the work being done.”

A BlueCommunity is a shared geographic region (village, town, city, province) whose local culture and economy function by waterways they inhabit, this could be anybody of water such as ocean, sea, lake, or river. Plastic Oceans seeks out local partners that already have existing socio-environmental programs that are making a difference with their citizens.

“We don’t look to come in and impose our projects and way of doing things,” said Tod Hardin, Chief Operating Officer of Plastic Oceans International. “Instead, we want to enhance what’s already working. As the old saying goes, don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. For us, it’s instead about learning from our partners and using our global resources and experience to create a larger impact and give these local efforts a worldwide voice.”

BlueCommunities connects like minded organizations by providing resources such as mini grants and guidance for those in need.

Plastic Oceans International has a goal of onboarding 250 communities and 1,000 members by the year 2022, the goal is to help 10,000,000 individuals worldwide.

Memberships are free however and evaluation process is requested prior to joining. For those interested in more information can be found at PlasticOceans.org/BlueCommunities.

CALIFORNIA—On January 12, FilmLA, a partner film office for the City and County of Los Angeles and other local jurisdictions gave an update with the filming activity, since reopening of Los Angeles County and on-location filming since June 2020.

“Like all industries in our country, filming has been severely impacted by COVID-19 with layoffs, delays in productions, etc.,” stated Paul Audley, President of FilmLA to Canyon News. “However, in greater Los Angeles, filming was completely shut down from Mid-March to late June.  Since then, it resumed over the summer at about 20% of normal production.  Gradual increases in September and October never reached 50% of normal.  Currently, production is at about 20% of normal.”

On June 5, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that counties throughout the state could resume film, television and commercial production starting on June 12, 2020.

FilmLA has been monitoring film production for the past 29 weeks. FilmLA recorded 4,213 filming permits with 2,985 unique projects.

With the impact of COVID-19, FilmLA continued to provide permits, but has seen a decrease over the past two months. Last November, there was a 7.6 decrease with 813 permits requested, while December 2020 fell 24.9 percent with 613 permits requested.

“The activity decline started early and deepened throughout December,” states FilmLA on its website.

FilmLA reported the week before Christmas, 143 permits were issued; 58 permits were issued from December 14 through December 20, and 50 permits during  the week of the New Year.

With December having 21 working days, FilmLA averaged 29 film permits daily, which is the lowest the company has seen since August 2020.

“On December 24, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urged the film industry to consider pausing production for a few weeks during the COVID-19 surge. Highly invested in efforts to keep cast, crew and communities safe, and having already begun dialing activity back, an extended holiday hiatus began. CBS Studios, Warner Bros. TV, Universal Television, Disney Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television all indicated recently that they were pausing production until at least mid-January,” states the FilmLA website.

Television productions made up 27 percent of permits released in December. Only so many TV shows started filming locally. Some of the series that were in production were CBS’ “Ghosts,” “Insecure” (HBO), “Tacoma FD” (HBO Max), “The L Word: Generation Q” (Showtime), and “The 3 of Us” (CBS).

Feature films made six percent of permits released in December, 26 feature films, largely independents, commenced including “Monstrous,” “Slayers” and “This Land.”

Commercial production made 28 percent of the permits that were released in December. Projects featured last month were Haagen Dazs, Honda, Mountain Dew, and retailers/services such as Carl’s Jr., Lowe’s and Progressive.

“The film industry is frequently cited as the 3rd largest economic producer for greater Los Angeles.  More the 5000 small businesses are totally dependent on the film industry, in addition to the studio and union workers we typically associate with filming.  The economic impact is profound outside the industry as well since many sidelined workers do not have income to spend in our region”, said Audley to Canyon News.

SANTA MONICA/MALIBU—On Thursday, January 14, the Santa Monica Malibu School District Board Of Education will announce the new member to fill Councilmember Oscar de la Torre’s vacant seat.

The 23 selected candidates all met the criteria required and will be given five minutes to prepare a speech on why they should be selected to take over the SMMUSD Board of Education seat followed by the public’s comments.

The current board will go through the process of voting on the potential candidates until one of the candidates receives four or more votes. Superintendent Ben Drati will administer the Oath of Office for the appointee.

As per Education Code, registered voters who live within the district have the right to petition to select a special election to fill the vacancy, within the first 30 days from the date of the appointment. In the event that no petition is submitted, the new selected councilmember will serve until 2022.

On December 8, 2020, De Le Torre forfeited his school board position for a City Councilmen position. It is stated under government code section 1099 that elected members of government board cannot simultaneously hold unsuitable offices. De Le Torres disagrees and voiced his opinion to hold onto both seats, but no court case has been filed yet.

De Le Torre along with several other individuals have voiced there support of Jason Feldman who was the runner up for the Santa Monica/Malibu Unified School Board seat back in November.

On January 9, 2021, parents of the special education community sent a letter to the SMMUSD board with 110 signatures backing up the support of Feldman’s appointment.

Feldman has proven he is more than qualified as he has two children currently enrolled in the district and he is also a civil rights lawyer. He is an advocate for students with special needs. Feldman has mentioned social justice, layoffs, and inter-community divisions.

Another potential candidate is Keith Coleman, the second runner up during the November 2020 elections. Coleman received 396 fewer votes than Feldman.

Coleman is the founder of the Stanford Angels, Entrepreneurs of Southern California, along with being co-chair of the SMMUSD Intercultural Equity & Excellence Advisory Committee and the Parent Connection Group. He is also apart of the “Progressive Slate” for candidates running in the Democratic Party delegates for Assembly in District 50.

Throughout his application, Coleman stressed the importance of parent engagement and social justice within the district.

The board meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Zoom. Members of the public who wish to make a public comment can do so by completing a Google survey sign up at tinyurl.com/y4hl9r6g, which will open 30 minutes prior to the meeting.
