SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, December 2, the Malibu Education Foundation announced that the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) voted unanimously in support of Malibu becoming its own entity, Malibu Independent School District.

The SMMUSD held a special Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 1, from 5-8 p.m. at the SMMUSD District Office located at 1717 4th Street in Santa Monica.

The purpose of the meeting was to come to an agreement on three key elements; financial, operational, and the governing framework needed to separate the two currently adjoined school districts. The Malibu meeting is scheduled for after the SMMUSD meeting.

According to the city of Malibu, the three governments include Property Tax Revenue Sharing Agreement, outlining how property tax revenues will be allocated; the Operational Transfer Agreement, which details the transition of staffing each facility involved, services, Joint Powers Agreement, and shared oversight during the transition.

Santa Monica and Malibu leadership both publicly shared interest in two separate, quality school districts.

Both pros and cons have been posted on X and other social media sites. Posts and accusations that the schools are participating in “segregation in 2025,” have been unfounded thus far.

“The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) and the City of Malibu are advancing a major milestone in the effort to create two independent school districts; the Malibu Unified School District (MUSD) and the Santa Monica Unified School District (SMUSD). Both SMMMUSD and the City of Malibu remain committed to equity, fairness and ensuring high-quality education for students in both future districts.”

The proposal to separate Santa Monica and Malibu into two separate school districts was passed in late November.

MALIBU—On Friday, August 29, three children ages 2, 7, and 9 had to be air lifted to UCLA Medical Center after the car they were sitting in was stolen in East LA. The driver led California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on a high-speed chase passing through Santa Monica on I-10 Freeway. The pursuit ended in a crash on Kanan Dume Road. All three of the children were injured.

FOX11 interviewed the mother of the three children who were reportedly injured and traumatized in the carjacking.

The mom was speaking in Spanish as she retold what happened as she left the car briefly to go into the 7-11 on E. Olympic Boulevard to get the kids a treat. Her husband and uncle were parked right next to her car. At the same moment the father was called away.

It was during that moment that the car thief jumped into the vehicle. The father and uncle attempted to fight off the man to no avail.

Reports indicate that the suspect escaped the vehicle after hitting another vehicle and ran up an embankment into a neighborhood nearby. The suspect was attempting to steal another vehicle when police captured him and took him into custody. His name has not been released to the public.

The Fox News reporter indicated that the children had unbuckled themselves as they were trying to escape the vehicle. The children were all hurt. The middle child was hurt the worst. They are home. Their physical wounds are expected to heal, but the trauma remains.

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist the family as both parents work, and their vehicle was totaled in the crash.

MALIBU—On Saturday, April 26, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued the following Beach Hazard Statement for the Malibu Coast and Los Angeles Beaches, which is in effect from Sunday, April 27 through the evening of Wednesday, April 30.

The following came directly from NWS:

“WHAT…Breaking waves up to six feet for south-facing beaches and dangerous rip currents due to a long-lived, long-period south swell. Minor nuisance flooding may occur Monday and Tuesday between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. during high tide.

WHERE…Malibu Coast and Los Angeles County Beaches.

WHEN…From Sunday morning through Wednesday evening.

Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:

Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or
stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly
in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”

In addition to the hazard warning by the NWS, Malibu also has been hit with another round of mudslides. Reports indicate that there will be closures in sections of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) due to mud and debris.

PCH was closed between Sunset Boulevard and Carbon Beach Terrace on Saturday night, April 26.

According to the California Department of Transportation, this section of PCH will remain closed on Sunday, April 27 to enable work crews time to clean up Tuna Canyon Road.

MALIBU—On Monday, April 21, the City of Malibu and California Transportation (CALTRANS) sent out an alert to the public to remind travelers of the lane closures on the southbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) with several lane closures expected today (Tuesday, April 22nd). Details are below.

Construction will cause Caltrans to close at least one southbound and one northbound lane on PCH close to Corral Canyon on Tuesday April 22, from 6:00 a.m. until an unspecified time on Wednesday, April 23rd.

The following came directly from the Malibu City website alerts:

“Caltrans will close lanes on northbound and southbound PCH near Corral Canyon overnight Tuesday, April 22 for construction zone realignment 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with one lane open in each direction. Expect noise and truck activity. The southbound left-turn pocket will close again, possibly through the summer of 2026.

Please drive cautiously, watch for workers and work vehicles – traffic fines are doubled in construction zones under CA law.

This is the third and final stage of construction for the new bridge, part of a project to repair / replace 12 drainage culverts along PCH from Temescal Canyon Rd to the Ventura County line and convert a culvert at Corral Canyon Road into a bridge to allow ocean salmon to swim upstream. The overall project will continue through summer of 2029.”

According to traffic authorities, travelers should expect traffic to run slower than usual and should plan on time delays or seek alternate routes.

MALIBU/SANTA MONICA—The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Highway 1, is expected to finally reopen to the public by the end of May, having one lane open in each direction. Governor Gavin Newsom is prioritizing cleaning up parcels from the immense damage the wildfires caused earlier this year, while also enforcing wildfire prevention methods, accelerating the long-awaited practical yet sentimental roads recondition.

As of April 12, 2025, Governor Newsom released a video announcement regarding his plans for making the areas impacted by the wildfire disasters safer and habitable. The Palisades Fire, which started on January 7, overtook up to 23,448 acres of land, leaving tons of debris and dry vegetation on the roads. PCH is one of those roads that lie on the outskirts of where the fires transpired.

PCH stretches from an intersecting highway near Dana Point, Orange County to Leggett, Mendocino County; about 656 miles all along the coast. The legendary highway goes through many cities, including Santa Monica, Topanga Canyon, Malibu, and Pacific Palisades, which were all impacted by the fires.

The stretch from Carbon Beach Terrace and Chautauqua Boulevard in Malibu, has been closed since after the fires started. Businesses, school buses and residents of the area were permitted access through these road closures in March, it was still closed to the general public, and predictions for a reopen date for the roads is unknown.

The Governor has noted his goal to enforce wildfire safety all while having departments such as Caltrans, USACE, and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services working constantly to make PCH accessible to the public.

According to the latest publication on the governor’s official website, “…USACE is removing nearly 1,284 truckloads of debris per day.” With everything working in place, we can optimistically look forward to seeing ourselves driving down PCH by the end of springtime.

MALIBU—On March 20, Canyon News learned that the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) located at 3601 South Gaffey in San Pedro, has had to set up portals on area beaches due to the toxic algae bloom occurring for the fourth year in a row. MMCC is finding sickened sea lions washing up on the shores of Los Angeles County Beaches. The sea lions are not the only ones getting sick. The toxic blooms are now affecting dolphins and sea birds too.

The MMCC is processing the intake of sick patients at the portals. The MMCC reports symptoms in sea lion patients including a loud barking sound, swinging of the head, lethargy, and seizures.

Reports indicate that the increase in Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) over the last few years could be attributed to the excess of nutrients in the soil from fertilizers and the runoff of wastewater. They thrive in these conditions coupled with warm temperatures.  Forecasters often report a “Red Tide,” when the blooms are most prevalent.  This occurs not only on the coast of southern California but also in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and some have even been reported in the cold waters of Lake Eerie.

It is important not to approach the sea lions. They aren’t pets. They are sick and exhibiting some aggressive behavior. On the MMCC website, there are helpful tips on how to help the sea lions such as viewing them from afar. If they react to your presence, you are too close. The website suggests using a camera to snap a photo rather than trying to approach the sea lions for a “selfie.”

The following came directly from the MMCC website:

“The [MMCC] rehabilitates sick and injured marine mammals at our hospital until they can be released back into the wild. Annually, the center cares for 250-500 sea lions, elephant seals, fur seals, and harbor seals.”

Since 1992, they have cared for over 10,000 marine animals by “providing a clean and stress-free environment” is paramount! Our focus is always on keeping the animal as wild as possible to ensure its success upon release into its natural habitat.

The MMCC encourages those who would like to volunteer or support their efforts to visit the MMCC website to find out how to get involved.

LACDPHMALIBU —On January 27, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) posted a bacteria warning for Los Angeles County beaches due to wildfire debris in the run-off water causing bacteria and toxins to drain into the Pacific Ocean.

Several beaches from Malibu Beach to Playa del Ray are closed until further notice due to increased debris and bacteria from fire zones causing a public health hazard.

The LACDPH bacteria warning was issued on January 26. The following information came directly from the LACDPH January 27, press release:

“The closure will remain in effect until further notice. Beach users are cautioned to avoid water and sand contact.”

Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory – through Thursday, January 30, 2025

Due to recent rainfall and the increase in fire debris along these ocean waters, an Ocean Water Closure has been declared for Las Flores State Beach to Santa Monica State Beach. Fire debris [in the] runoff [waters] and pollutants in the water and on the sand may contain toxic or carcinogenic chemicals.

The Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory declared on January 26, 2025, will remain in effect at least until 8:00 am, Thursday, January 30, 2025, for all other Los Angeles County beaches. Beach users are cautioned to avoid water contact for at least 72 hours after significant rainfall. This advisory may be extended depending on further rainfall.

Ocean Water Quality Advisory Due to Fire Debris Updated Locations – Extends beyond January 30, 2025

Once the rain advisory is lifted, the ocean water advisory for Surfrider Beach to Las Flores State Beach and Santa Monica State Beach to Dockweiler State Beach at World Way will remain in effect due to fire debris runoff, which may contain toxic or carcinogenic chemicals, which can be harmful to health.

This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand. Beach users are advised to stay away from any fire debris on the beach.

More information may be found on the advisory hotline at 800-525-5662 or on the LACDPH webpage, under Environmental Health.

Executive Officer to the Chief of Police, Lieutenant Erika R. Aklufi of the Santa Monica Police Department issued the following press release. She did emphasize to Canyon News that they are not allowing anyone to cross through entry/exit points in Santa Monica to the evacuation zones in Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles.

PR National Guard in SM

The Santa Monica Police Department posted the following information on their X social media page.

“In response to the ongoing Palisades fire, the National Guard has been deployed to assist our department in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. You will find them stationed at traffic control points around Santa Monica. We thank you for your cooperation as we continue to navigate this situation together. Your safety is our top priority.”

According to the Military Times, “Four military Airborne Fire fighting System units-technology that can turn C-130 Hercules airplanes into firefighting aircraft without major modifications, can be used if needed.”

A reported 960 acres have been consumed in the Pacific Palisades fire. An estimated 150,000 people have been evacuated, and 10 have died. The fires have not all been extinguished. California is normally burdened with wildfires during the summer heat. Climate Change activists are attributing the fires to climate change.

Water rationing by Governor Gavin Newsom coupled with poor fire prevention techniques are contributing factors. Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass, cut funding for some Los Angeles County Firefighters. Reports indicate 250 firefighters initially responded to extinguish the blazes. The wind and water shortages have been a challenge to firefighters who have been fighting the flames since January 7th.

MALIBU—On December 9, a fire began in the Hills of Malibu. By December 10, 2,200 acres were consumed with fire forcing the people of Malibu to leave their homes. Mandatory evacuations are in place east of Malibu Canyon Road, South Plum Road, and Serra Retreat. Many residents were forced to evacuate including some celebrities such as Dick Van Dyke, and his wife, Arlene, Cher, Barbara Streisand, Julia Roberts, Beyonce’, and Jay-z among others.

By December 11, reports confirmed more than 3,000 acres in this area burned.

The talented actor and comedian, Dick Van Dyke, who turns 99 years old on Friday, December 13, checked in on his Facebook account to let his friends and fans know he and his wife evacuated safely.

“Arlene and I have safely evacuated with our animals except for Bobo escaped as we were leaving. We’re praying he’ll be OK and that our community in Serra Retreat will survive these terrible fires.”

Multiple news reports indicate that Cher has also evacuated safely with her pets who are all with her at the area hotel of her choice. There is currently no information readily available on the evacuation status of the other stars living in the area.

Serra Retreat is a Catholic Retreat Center, but also a gated community of luxury homes nestled in the hills of Malibu overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The following came directly from the Malibu-Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce webpage.

“In 1942, the Franciscan Friars purchased the 26-acre property with an abandoned hilltop mansion and began hosting Catholic men’s retreats. In the 1970’s they began hosting women’s retreats. The Franciscan Friars continue the tradition, welcoming groups, and personal retreats, as well as meetings, conferences, and workshops. Serra Retreat provides a superb opportunity for church groups, schools, and non-profit and profit organizations, to reflect, plan, and set new goals.

Canyon News reached out to the Franciscans at the Serra Retreat Center to inquire about their safety.  Tami Georgeff, the Administrator of the Serra Retreat Center responded with the following statement.

“Thanks for reaching out. We are all safe and everyone was evacuated in time. The fire came very close to our property and sadly a couple of houses were lost in the canyon below us. Tom Anderson, our Executive Director was able to go back up there to check on the property. The first responders did a wonderful job of keeping Serra Retreat safe.”

HOLLYWOOD HILLS—On August 4, Canyon News did a gas price comparison between now and four years ago. Today, ARCO in Hollywood is selling unleaded gasoline for $6.09 a gallon or $5.99 a gallon if paying customers are using cash. Chevron is charging $5.27 per gallon while Mobil gas and 7-11 are up to $5.27

According to Gas Buddy Shell gas stations are charging $5.20 per gallon, Speedway, $5.21, and at Mobil and 7-Eleven the cost is $5.25 per gallon.

At these gas stations, gas prices are fluctuating up to $1.10 per gallon.

An AI search for Hollywood Hills indicates the following: Clark #459 $4.99 per gallon, Chevron #90458, $5.79, Sunset Oil Mobil, $5.39, Ampm, $5.09, Shell $5.19, and Mobil $5.29.

According to the Los Angeles Almanac, the average U.S. price per gallon of regular (unleaded) gasoline in January 2020 in Hollywood Hills was $3.42 per gallon. In June of 2022, the price hiked to $6.16 per gallon.

The almanac noted the following observation:

“In June 2022, a new average monthly regular gasoline price record of $6.16 [per gallon] was set for the Los Angeles region. It was the fourth month in a row in which a monthly record was set.

During that month, weekly average prices for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $6.23.

Although the Los Angeles Region ended the last month of 2022 with an average gasoline price lower than a year prior, its 2022 annual average price was the highest on record for the region.”

On March 1, 2022, President Joe Biden announced that he would allow the release of 30 million barrels of gasoline from U.S. oil reserves. Prior to that, the Biden Administration was holding back from using what was in reserve.

A new advertisement from the Trump Campaign states that gas prices doubled during the Biden Administration.

On January 16, 2024, VERIFY Fact-Check results indicate that is true. Here are the results:

“Former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign recently released a 30-second ad comparing the two presidents’ records on the economy.”

The ad claims that gas prices, mortgage rates, income, and retirement savings were better during the Trump presidency than under Biden.

When President Biden took office in January of 2021, the average price of a gallon of gas in the United States was $2.42, according to the Energy Information Administration.

By June of 2022, that price had risen to $5.03 per gallon, more than double the original amount. Experts said at the time this spike was driven in part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing sanctions against Russia, a major oil exporter, as well as demand for oil post-COVID rebounding faster than supply chains.”

A full report may be found on the VERIFY website.

On July 26, 2024, the Shale Report posted an article entitled, “Where Does Kamala Harris Stand On U.S. Energy.”

In the Shale Report, the author, Felicity Bradstock, reminds viewers that as Attorney General, Kamala Harris filed lawsuits against oil and gas companies.  In 2015, she supported former President Barack Obama’s Clean Power Plan.  When serving as Senator, Harris endorsed many of Joe Biden’s energy policies.

MALIBU—On May 2, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office of the Central District of California sent out a press release announcing the sentencing of Sea Captain Jerry Nehl Boylan, 70, of Santa Barbara, who was found guilty of gross negligence in the deaths of 33 passengers and one crew member who died in a horrific fire aboard the P/V Conception at dawn on September 2, 2019.

Captain Boylan was found guilty of gross negligence after he and five crew members were able to escape and survive the fire. He and all but one crew member abandoned the burning boat while the others were asleep below deck. He has been sentenced to 48 months of prison time.

The following information came directly from the press release:

“Boylan, as captain of the Conception, committed a series of failures – including abandoning his ship instead of rescuing passengers – that resulted in the disaster. Such conduct constituted misconduct, gross negligence, and inattention to his duties and led to the deaths of 34 victims, prosecutors argued.

As the ship’s captain, Boylan was responsible for the safety and security of the vessel, its passengers, and its crew. Federal prosecutors argued he failed in his responsibilities in several ways, including by failing to have a night watch or roving patrol, failing to conduct sufficient fire drills and crew training, failing to provide firefighting instructions or directions to crew members after the fire started, failing to use firefighting equipment, including a fire ax and fire extinguisher that were next to him in the wheelhouse, to fight the fire or attempt to rescue trapped passengers, failing to perform any lifesaving or firefighting activities whatsoever at the time of the fire, even though he was uninjured, failing to use the boat’s public address system to warn passengers and crew members about the fire; and, becoming the first crew member to abandon ship even though 33 passengers and one crew member were still alive and trapped below deck in the vessel’s bunkroom and in need of assistance to escape.”

The FBI, the Coast Guard Investigative Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF) and Explosives investigated the incident.

Assistant United States Attorneys Mark A. Williams, Matthew W. O’Brien, and Juan M. Rodríguez of the Environmental Crimes and Consumer Protection Section, Brian R. Faerstein, of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section, and Alexander P. Robbins of the Criminal Appeals Section prosecuted this case.

The Investigative Service Director for the U.S. Coast Guard made the following statement:

“There are no winners when lives are lost at sea, but there is justice in bringing those accountable to answer for their crimes. Today is an example of that. This was in its truest form, a joint effort by our hard-charging CGIS Special Agents, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.”

Christopher Bombardier, the Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Los Angeles division offered his deepest sympathy:

“I want to express my deepest condolences to everyone who lost a loved one. No sentencing will ever be sufficient for the suffering you have endured, nor will it bring back your loved ones. I hope this prosecution and sentencing sends a message to other captains that this recklessness is never repeated. I want to thank our National Response Team, which investigated the cause and origin of the fire. Their dedication and skilled expertise provided much-needed answers,” Bombardiere stated.

MALIBU—On Friday, March 22, well-known actor and comedian, Will Smith received a ticket for speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway. Police ticketed Smith for driving 63 miles per hour driving close to 20 mph over the speed limit.

The following information came directly from the California General Code:

“Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) (State Route 1) is a four-lane state highway traversing the city from east to west along the Pacific Coast. The right-of-way includes an intermittent center turning lane. Within the city, PCH is about 25 miles long with a posted speed limit between 45 and 55 miles per hour.

The famous actor did not get away with a warning. PCH is listed as one of the nation’s most scenic highways. The number of fatal accidents on this stretch of highway has resulted in a heavier police presence and many more tickets.

Police first told TMZ that, “No one gets a break for putting the pedal to the metal on such a super dangerous stretch of highway.

Reports indicate there have been as many as 58 fatal accidents on the Pacific Coast Highway in the last 14 years.

Multiple news outlets have reported the speeding ticket as “part of Will Smiths ongoing legal trouble.” One aforementioned article cited Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. That was almost exactly two years ago, at the Oscars. Reports indicate that Smith was banned from the Oscars for 10 years. There hasn’t been any reported criminal activity since that time.

On March 26, Smith released the trailer for his latest film, “Bad Boys Ride or Die.” The action-packed comedy – cop adventure will be released in theaters on June 7. The film was directed by Adil and Bilall and was written by Chris Brenner. The trailer may be found on Will Smith’s Facebook page.

MALIBU—On March 17, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that a 25 ft. long, 13,000 lb. gray whale washed up on Little Dume Beach. The first sighting of the whale was while it was still in the surf, and was reported to The California Wildlife Center on Saturday, March 16, at approximately 8:00 a.m.

Authorities have indicated that the whale that washed up on Little Dume Beach was a male gray whale calf. The cause of the death of the whale is unknown.

Canyon News reached out to the Assistant Information Officer for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Amanda McDermot, but did not hear back in time for print.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a gray whale is identified by “their slate gray coloration with gray and white patches on the skin. They are covered in abrasions, blotches, scars, and clusters of white barnacles and orange whale lice. Adult males average 45-46 ft (13.7-14m) in length with adult females being slightly larger.”

Whale lice are reportedly small crablike creatures that crawl all over the whale’s head. They can be beneficial as they feed off of the algae growing on the whale.

Whales Tail LLC reports that the adult females are slightly larger and reach about 50 feet in length. Both sexes weigh up to 30-40 tons. The gray whale’s flukes or tail can span up to 10 feet.

Oregon State University confirms in its reports that the gray whale has few predators. The only natural predators of gray whales are killer whales and large sharks. Killer whales tend to show up along the Oregon coast during late April and May and may target females and calves migrating north during feeding season.
