Golden Knights Take Control in Second Period

With Jonathan Marchessault’s impressive natural hat trick in the second period, the Knights secured a 4-2 lead heading into the third period. William Karlsson and Reilly Smith also contributed to the scoreboard with their goals, the latter being an empty-netter. Adin Hill played a vital role in the team’s victory, making 39 saves in goal and thus increasing their odds on the Stanley Cup.

Oilers Struggle to Keep Up

Although Warren Foegele and Connor McDavid each scored a goal, it was insufficient to match the Golden Knights’ dominant performance. In three out of the last four games, Stuart Skinner, the starting Oilers goalie, has been swapped out in favor of Jack Campbell due to poor play.

During the first two periods of Game 6, Skinner allowed four goals in just 17 shots before being replaced. Campbell stepped in for the third period and made four saves.

Golden Knights Limit Oilers’ Offense

In Sunday’s second period, Vegas impressively shut down Edmonton’s highly-regarded power play, limiting them to only one shot. Over the course of the last four games in the series, the Knights limited the NHL’s highest-scoring team from the regular season to just 10 goals. They also outscored Edmonton 17-10 at even strength.

Marchessault’s Hat Trick Leads the Way

Jonathan Marchessault finished his natural hat trick in the second period, securing a two-goal advantage for the Knights. From just above the hash marks, aided by an assist from Alex Pietrangelo, he fired a wrist shot that beat Skinner on the far side.

At 7:44, Marchessault was positioned near the crease when Skinner’s shoulder deflected Alec Martinez’s slapshot into the air. The puck landed on the goal line, allowing Marchessault to easily tap it in for another score.

At 4:26, Marchessault secured his hat trick with a stroke of luck, thanks to a redirection off a skate in front of the crease. Skinner’s effort to block his shot was in vain as he slid across the goalmouth.

McDavid and Draisaitl Reunited in Third Period

To try and boost their offense, the Oilers reunited Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid on the same line in the final period. Draisaitl had already netted 13 goals in his first eight playoff games. While the Oilers generated several opportunities, including a shot from McDavid that hit the post, they could not capitalize on them.

With just over three minutes remaining, Campbell was pulled to make room for an extra attacker, but the Knights, led by Hill’s stellar performance, remained steadfast and held on to their lead, adding an empty netter by William Karlsson with 39 seconds left.

Premier Defensemen Return to Lineups

After serving one-game suspensions during Game 5, both teams had their top defensemen back in the lineup for Sunday’s game; Darnell Nurse returned for Edmonton and Pietrangelo for Vegas. However, the Oilers had not overlooked Pietrangelo’s slash on Draisaitl in Game 4. In Sunday’s game, Nick Bjugstad and Draisaitl were both seen making stick gestures toward the Knights’ defenseman.

Like the pouring rain descending upon the fans who braved the harsh weather, the Kings poured it on the Islanders scoring four goals in the second period. As New York proved helpless against the overwhelming Kings offensive deluge.

The Kings got goals from five different players in the victory – Quinton Byfield, Drew Doughty, Alex Iafallo Blake Lizotte, Trevor Moore – and points from 14 different skaters.

Kings Trevor Moore was impressed by the team converting on the power play, one of the few weaknesses in an otherwise Stanley Cup caliber team.

“It’s huge we scored. Last year we relied on our 5-on-5 game and we still have to rely on it, we still have to be a better 5-on-5 team, but now we have the added boost of having really good special teams. I think it’s been great,” said Moore postgame.

New York scored the lone goal from the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Defenseman Ryan Pulock sprung forward Pierre Engvall into a 1-on-1 situation and he pulled the puck to his forehand in the slot and fired past Korpisalo for the game-opening goal.

The Kings evened the contest less than two minutes into the second period, through Lizotte, to tie the game at one. Off a won faceoff by Lizotte, the puck found Sean Walker at the left point and he fired toward the net, with Lizotte getting the deflection on the way through.

Los Angeles had gone an icy 3 for 31 conversion on the power play since the All-Star break. Taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play, the Kings struck twice to open up a 3-1 lead midway through the second frame.

First, on a two-man advantage, forward Anze Kopitar hesitated and fed Doughty in his wheelhouse, with the veteran defenseman hammering the one-timer past Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin for the go-ahead goal. Iafallo made it 3-1 59 seconds later, the team’s second power-play goal of the night.

Forward Viktor Arvidsson fired off the post, with his rebound deflecting off of Iafallo’s chest, right to his stick and into the net for his tenth goal of the season, the athleticism combined with the thunderous and spontaneous roar from the crowd made it the play of the game.

Moore made it 4-1 just past the midway point of the middle stanza, his first goal since returning from injury. The Islanders added one late in the second period, pushing the score to 4-2 through 40 minutes of play.

New Kings Goaltender Joonas Korpisalo improved to 3-0, making crucial saves as the Islanders attempted a spirited come back effort late. Korpisalo as he made 26 saves on 28 shots faced.

Los Angeles Kings improved to (39-20-9) on the season. Second place in the Western Conference standings behind the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Playing their first playoff game since 2018, the Los Angeles Kings were incapable of stopping Edmonton’s onslaught, trailing 5-0 in the second period.

Evander Kane had a hat trick for the Oilers, while Zach Hyman scored two goals in this lopsided victory. One of the NHL’s brightest stars, the Oiler’s Connor McDavid added a goal and two assists. In three games, he already has six points in the series.

The Kings earned goals from Anze Kopitar and Phillip Danault, with Kopitar collecting two points in defeat. The Kings got 13 saves from Jonathan Quick and 16 saves from Cal Petersen in the loss.

Down 2-0 after the first period, the Kings had three skaters caught up on ice, leading to a 2-on-1 the other way. Connor McDavid hit Leon Draisaitl for the back-post tap-in giving Edmonton a 3-0 lead, Draistial’s third goal of the series.

Coming into the series the Kings knew their margin was little for error. Edmonton has regained home advantage in the series.

Edmonton scored three goals in the brief time span of 3:24 in the second period, putting the game on ice for the Kings.

“I can summarize it all up for you, we can all go home. We weren’t any good, we’re really disappointed, we got trapped playing their game. You can ask me about individuals, I’ll give you the same answer for all of them. They weren’t any good, and we have to regroup tomorrow,” said Los Angeles Kings Head Coach Todd McLellan said in a press conference that only went 31 seconds.

But there has been little to celebrate in LA in recent times. For all their high profile players, the Lakers have only won one championship in the last 11 years – and the Dodgers have just one World Series title in the last 30. Even a more successful sports team, the LA Galaxy, has not tasted victory for over ten years after a flurry of MLS Cup titles. It is fair to say that California sports betting fans have not been backing their hometown favorites for a while.

#4 – Lakers, NBA

The 2021 regular season held much promise for both LA teams before the first snap of the year. But both seem destined for a Wild Card spot at the moment. The Rams look the more likely to go further and showed their intent with the deal bringing Odell Beckham Jr. to LA. We will have to wait to see whether he becomes just another big name who fails to shine.

#2 – Dodgers, MLB

The Dodgers have been one of the more consistent teams in baseball in recent years, but have been unable to dominate the sport. This year was something of a disappointment, with an exit in the NCLS after failing to win the NL West for the first time since 2012. There was immediate revenge beating the Giants in the NLDS though.

The Major League Baseball lock out will slow things down for all teams now, but the Dodgers will be looking to come back next year and repeat the World Series triumph of 2020. It is true that the Dodgers have probably been the best Los Angeles sports team in the last few years but 2021 will be marked down as a failure – and that is why they have only made the number two spot here.

#1 – Clippers, NBA

It will come as a surprise for some casual LA observers to discover the identity of the number one ranked sports team in the city for 2021. Forever in the shadow of the team they share their home arena with, the Clippers were able to become the best in the city this year, thanks to a postseason journey that went all the way to the Western Conference Finals.

Kawhi Leonard was the standout star of the team but it was a collective effort that took the Clippers to just one step from the NBA finals. But an ACL injury that could see him miss the whole of this season means that a lot has been heaped on the shoulders of Paul George now. There may not be any kind of repeat in 2022 but the Clippers performance last season has earned them the title of ‘Kings of LA’ 2021.

The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to one player determined to be the most valuable asset amongst his teammates. The player chosen will usually be a member of the team who wins the Stanley Cup. That tournament is currently just finishing up its second round before the semifinals. It won’t be long now until we know which team will go on to win the Stanley Cup, but it’s fun to speculate on what will happen next, too!

History of the Conn Smythe Trophy

The Conn Smythe Trophy has been awarded to the NHL’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) each year since the 1964-1965 season. It was named after the longtime owner, general manager, and head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fifty-three trophies have been presented to 46 different players over the years.

The Conn Smythe trophy has several differences from other major sporting trophies awarded within the NHL and  other major US league sports. Firstly, only the winner is named – there is no ceremony, no shortlists or alternate finalists.

In addition, the playoff Most Valuable Player awards presented in the World Series MVP, Super Bowl MVP, NBA Finals MVP and MLS Cup MVP, the Conn Smythe is assessed on the entire performance history of each player during the whole of the NHL postseason, instead of just the championship game or series.

This second difference arguably makes the postseason of the NHL just as thrilling as the main tournament, because there is a strong incentive for players to perform at their best throughout every postseason game. The postseason in each of the other sports are (perhaps fairly) viewed as being less important than the actual championship games.

To be awarded the Conn Smythe trophy demonstrates a level of commitment to both your performance and your team that the other MVP awards do not. It is for this reason that the Conn Smythe is one of the most treasured pieces of silverware amongst professional athletes in major US sports.

The competition will resume with an expanded playoff format that will feature 12 teams from each conference starting on August 1. A qualifying round will commence the tournament with the top four teams from each conference earning a bye for that stage.

The teams sitting out of the qualifying rounds will play in a round-robin tournament to decide the top four seeds for playoffs. Meanwhile, the other clubs will play in a best-of-five series to advance to the playoffs, which will be held in its traditional seven-game format.

The losing teams of the qualifying rounds would be eligible for the No. 1 overall pick for the NHL lottery.

Teams can bring a maximum of 31 players, including goalies. Teams can have as many as 30 skaters but an unlimited number of goalies. Also, teams can only bring 52 individuals which include players, coaches, owners and other personnel. Coronavirus testing will be conducted daily along with temperature checks and symptom screenings.

The Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers will play in the round-robin for the East. The St. Louis Blue, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars will compete in the round-robin for the West.

The qualifying rounds will proceed with the following matchups:

Eastern Conference: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Rangers, New York Islanders vs. Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Columbus Blue Jackets.

Western Conference: Edmonton Oilers vs. Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators vs. Arizona Coyotes, Vancouver Canucks vs. Minnesota Wild, Calgary Flames vs. Winnipeg Jets.

Two host cities will house the Eastern and Western Conference in an isolated bubble. The Stanley Cup Finals and the conference finals will be held at one of the host cities. The hub cities have yet to be decided but multiple sources expect the Canadian cities of Toronto and Edmonton to be named the hub cities with Edmonton hosting the finals.

The Return to Play Plan has yet to be ratified by league officials and the NHLPA as they are ironing out the final details of the agreement, but a deal is expected to be done in the next 3-5 days. If approved, teams will be allowed to begin training camps starting on July 13.

It’s been about two months since the National Hockey League officially suspended play, with no update on when the sport will resume in the near future. In a memo sent out last week, the LA Kings have informed season-ticket holders they will receive refund options. The team has seven remaining home games that have been postponed, all which will be either monetarily refunded or credited for future games. The season was officially stopped March 12.

According to an LA Kings spokesman, refund payments will begin as soon as possible.  Those who have renewed their season tickets for the 2020-2021 season can use their credits from this year, along with a 10 percent bonus. Fans will also be able to defer payments until October after their initial deposit.

Police responded to a call at the Kentucky Grand Hotel at approximately 1:30 a.m. after Belfour allegedly attempting to fight a hotel manager while intoxicated. Belfour is said to have also hit and broken a glass window in this incident.

It is said that when police attempted to detain Belfour, he was not cooperative. He was eventually arrested on charges of third-degree criminal mischief and alcohol intoxication in a public place. Belfour was booked into the Warren County Regional Jail and appeared for an arraignment hearing in Warren District Court later that Tuesday morning.

Belfour played the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Dallas Stars during his time with the National Hockey League (NHL). Belfour won the 1999 Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars and was awarded the Vezina Trophy twice for seasons 1990-91 and 1992-93, which is given annually to the NHL’s best goaltender. He also earned an Olympic gold medal during the 2002 Winter Games as a member of Team Canada. He currently sits in fourth place on the NHL all-time wins list. Belfour is one of only two players to have won an NCAA championship, (which he won with the University of North Dakota in the 1986–87 season), an Olympic Gold medal, and a Stanley Cup; the other player is Neal Broten.

Form and Momentum

You cannot make your way all the way up to the final without being in excellent run of form. Both of these teams have been on impressive runs coming into the final, but only one will keep that momentum going and Game 1 will tell us which of the Blues and the Bruins will continue their winning streak. Winning that first game will be crucial.

Currently, the Bruins are on a seven game winning run in which they have put 28 goals past the opposition’s goaltender and have only conceded 9. Similarly, the Blues are on a three match winning run and have won 6 of their last 8 games. In that three-game winning run against the San Jose Sharks the Blues scored 12 and only conceded 2.

Battle of the Coaches

One of the reasons why the Boston Bruins are slight favourites going into the final is their coach Bruce Cassidy. Cassidy is hailed as a master tactician and strategist and it is said that his team never plays the same way in two consecutive matches.

On the other side will be Craig Berube, who is known for being a very good motivator of men. He transformed the Blues from a team that was rock bottom into potential Stanley Cup winners and that shouldn’t go unnoticed as well.

Team Canada had won four consecutive gold medals, including the headtbreaking gold in 2014 during the Sochi Olympics in 2014, when Canada overcame a 2-0 defecit to eventually steal gold from the U.S. women’s team.

There were nine returning members from Team USA who remember that night. This game was redemption for the United States! The game began in favor of the Red, White and Blue scoring the first goal making it 1-0.

Canada responded by adding two goals in the second period, giving Canada the edge, 2-1 heading into the third period.

The heroes of this Gold Medal Match are the Lamoreaux sisters. First, Monique Lamoreaux evened the score with a slapshot tying the score at 2 apiece, sending the match to overtime.

In the captivating 20 minute OT, neither team was able to place the puck in the net. However, the United States effectively held off a Canadian powerplay in the waning minutes of overtime.

After four exhausting periods, we had a shootout to decide the Gold Medal. Even after five attempts, we were still knotted. A sixth shot determined the cathartic conclusion.

Jocelyn Lamoreaux-Davidson (Moniques twin) stood at center ice ready for gold. Breezing down the ice, she did a triple shake and bake before gently tapping the puck into the back of the net.

The other hero was U.S. Goalie, 20-year old Maddie Rooney. The new “Seceratary of Defense” was phenomenal. She made a kick save to earn the top prize.

After she made the save, Rooney said, “Everything got into a blur, seeing my teammates sprinting at me. It’s an indescribable feeling.”

Her teammates were scrambling over the bench wall; gloves were flying all over the ice as the Americans finally celebrated at the end of an Olympic tournament. When they reached Rooney, they piled on.

One display by Team Canada was outright disrespectful. Most notably, Canada’s Jocelyne Larocque took her silver medal off of her neck almost as soon as she received it.

“We were going for gold,” the Canadian defender told reporters later. “We were chasing a gold medal.”

This is the United States first Gold since the Nagano games in 1998.

A lack of ability to generate any consequential defense is part of the reason why the Tampa Bay Lightning offensive frontmen were able to cut the Kings to ribbons last night in what was expected to be one of the most contentious games of the regular season so far. The Kings did seem to rally in the second, with stalwart Tyler Toffoli netting the puck near the end of the period and Anze Kopitar also scoring (and then having it disallowed over goaltender interference).

They also seemed to finally get a handle on the Lightning’s whip-fast offensive presence, only allowing one more goal in the third from Vladislav Namestnikov. Kings defenseman Oscar Fantenberg netted his first goal of the season in the third, bringing the game to its final score of 5 to 2.

So what was it that went so wrong with the Kings – a team which quickly established itself as one of the season’s front-runners early on? In a word (or two): Stamkos and Kucherov. The 24-year-old Russian right winger, Nikita Kucherov, has come to be an insurmountable problem for not only the Kings, but practically every team in the League. He is currently number two in the NHL in points, with 29 in 17 games – only behind on-ice partner Steven Stamkos who has 30. Together, there is almost no defensive composition that these two can’t overcome.

That’s not to say you can’t work around the pairing, however. Something that the Kings, at least in the first period, outright failed to do. The Kings seemed hesitant about putting body against body in the opening minutes of the game, allowing the oppressive swiftness of Kucherov and Stamkos to reach its full potential. As Kings coach John Stevens said after the game, “Our whole focus was to be a better checking team against that type of offense. Quite frankly, we didn’t do a very good job.”

However, not all is lost. Hope remains for future bouts between the two teams, especially since the Kings exist–for the nonce- one of the Lightning’s biggest contenders for inter-League dominance. As the Kings proved in periods two and three when they put their minds to defensive play they can mitigate damage and allow their owned rejuvenated offensive prowess to shine through. Time will tell if that lesson sticks.

Prior to last night’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the one black mark on the team’s record came on October 11 during their overtime loss to Pacific Division rivals, the Calgary Flames. As of a result, the Kings remain one of four teams in the NHL that have suffered only one loss in regulation time.

What has been the cause of the Kings’ success – especially in light of their disappointing 2016-2017 season? On one hand, they’ve maintained a consistent, inspired defense – a hallmark of the team. At only 17 goals allowed (the second fewest in the League), the Kings have maintained a spirited goaltending presence in the form of Jonathan Quick, who seems to be back in top form again despite being out for nearly five months last season due to a groin injury. In fact, Quick currently maintains the seventh best save percentage in the League at .934, just a hair behind Ben Bishop (Stars) at .928 and Keith Kinkaid (Devils) at .932.

Credit is also due to a reinvigorated Kings offense, headed by Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar. The latter of who seems to have regained –at least for now- the scoring ability that made him such a threat prior to 2016 and which seemed to have largely departed from him last season. In terms of goals scored, Kopitar stands at a 16-way tie for sixth place, having netted six pucks so far this season. Tonight’s game versus the Ottawa Senators will give Kopitar a chance to move up in the standings.

Right-winger Dustin Brown has leveled his considerable offensive pressure abilities against the opposition this year. He produced three assists and one empty netter goal in Saturday’s victory over the Blue Jackets and ranks second in the Kings’ offensive performance standings.

Though for the nonce they rank first in both their conference and division, stiff competition remains for the Kings in multiple forms, including both the St. Louis Blues (who have now tied the Kings’ points total) and the Las Vegas Golden Knights who are on track for a stellar debut season, defying many critics’ expectations with both their team coordination and lockdown defensive output.

While it’s clear that the Kings new offensive coaching has produced dividends so far, the season is still young.  Should the offensive coaching staff continue in their efforts to simultaneously focus and highlight the scoring chances generated by the abilities of Kopitar and Brown, there is no reason to expect anything less than sustained success for the Kings.

During the first period, the Monsters outshot the Barracuda 12 to 4, who came back to outshoot them 18 to 17 just before the 45-minute mark. Neither team managed to score any goals during each of the four power plays. Cleveland did notch a few posts in the second period, but San Jose goaltender Antoine Bibeau was vastly determined to not let his team be devoured once again, and he successfully blocked every shot fired at him.

The game remained scoreless all three periods and nearly the entire overtime interval, with San Jose’s defensive game (and Bibeau’s net minding game) remaining strong throughout.

It was the timing of the [only] goal scored which blew viewers out of the park. Defenseman Mike Brodzinski retrieved a pass from forward Adam Helewka (a player with solid hand-eye coordination, puck handling, passing, and quick decision making skills) in the offensive zone. From there, Brodzinski notched a buzzer-beating goal on Cleveland’s Matiss Kivlenieks with 1.1 seconds left in the game. This was 22 year-old Brodzinski’s first career AHL goal in 20 career games.

San Jose only put up a total of four penalties during Sunday’s match, compared to seven on Saturday.

With 28 total saves, Bibeau earned his first win as a member of San Jose’s franchise and his 11th professional shutout. Kivlenieks blocked 21 shots of 22 for Cleveland.

San Jose is now 3-3, and Sunday’s win put Cleveland at 2-3. The Barracuda will face the San Antonio Rampage in their home state on Friday, October 27.

The match had a slow start to begin with; 35 seconds into the first period, Cleveland’s Carter Camper effortlessly made his way past the Barracuda’s defense and fired a shot over Grosenick’s shoulder, giving the Monsters a 1-0 lead off the bat.

In the second period, the Monsters brought the lead up to 2-0 when John Ramage scored 12:56 minutes in. The Barracuda had sufficient opportunity to score on the power play, which Helewka came close to, but Monsters goaltender Brad Thiessen was clearly in a “hail Mary” mindset and successfully blocked the shot.

Bollig notched San Jose’s only goal of the game a few seconds before the two minute mark of the third period. Middleton and Sorensen provided the assists. Cleveland came back when Miles Koules scored a power play goal, followed by Tyler Motte successfully taking advantage of the open net with 53 seconds left in the game.

The Barracuda took three penalties in the first period, one during the second, and another three in the third, which Coach Roy Sommer has referred to as “bad decisions.” Grosenick failed to stop three shots out of 21, while Thiessen stopped 18 shots out of 19.

The Barracuda are now 2-3 and will face the Monsters again on Sunday, October 22.

Stockton forward Andrew Mangiapane scored the first goal of the game, almost 18 minutes into the first period. San Jose’s Brandon Mashinter retaliated by scoring less than two minutes later with only 22 seconds remaining.

Mashinter, left winger and AHL veteran, was paired on the offensive line with center John McCarthy and right winger Filip Sandberg, who scored the final goal of the game with just under four minutes remaining. Mashinter provided an assist for Sandberg’s goal.

“You could see today [Mashinter had] a lot of great plays,” said Sandberg after the match. “This was the first game I played with him, but I thought it was really fun. [There was] a lot of hard work out there. On [my] goal, we had a good forward check and he gave it to me, and I just shot it into the goal. “[Mashinter is] a really nice player to have on your team.”

McCarthy, another AHL veteran, added that the trio’s confidence built as the game progressed.

Forwards Danny O’Regan, Adam Helewka, and Rudolfs Balcers played in harmony as O’Regan notched two goals (he now has a total of four between both games against Stockton this year). Helewka and Balcers assisted each one.

“I feel more confident,” said Helewka. “Playing with Danny O’Regan always helps, he is a great player. [O’Regan and Balcers] are two highly skilled players; they find you in open ice.”

O’Regan referred to his two goals as “beneficiary” plays from Helewka and Balcers (an AHL first-timer).

“[Helewka] is very creative, a creative guy and skilled,” said O’Regan. “I like the way he plays; I played with him a lot last year and I think we go well together.”

The Barracuda got swooped by the Grand Rapids Griffins 7-4 in the home opener, and the Heat defeated them 4-0 in their previous match. This feat seemingly had Coach Roy Sommer thinking about how the evening would end.

“I knew we had to play better than we did over the weekend,” said Sommer. “We’re still not there yet, we still have a lot to do on our own end; it is not where it should be. Look at the two goals [Stockton] scored, point blankers. I don’t think we gave them two of those all year [last season], so we’ve got to get better on our own end… we’re leaving on a good note.”
